it was sooo terribly long and boring, nevertheless still one of the better entries of the pc demo compo at bp, so worth to check.

Nice homage to the classic videos. Furthermore, who could resist a dolphin with a laser beam on its head?

great stuff! I'll be watching this one for a long time. Can't imagine how people could find it boring.. maybe its that old taste problem again.

Many thanks for everyone involved in bringing us this!

I'm not a big fan of the repetetive MFX style, but this is a masterpiece! The music was very stale, but the filter effect and the overall presentation worked very well.
rulez added on the 2004-04-14 18:21:40 by Wade Wade
I like it. Music is just as monotonic and fitting as you would expect, effects kick ass with the plentiness and especially the old, VHS-simulation RGB-noise makes this a grrreat trip!

Most scenes was extremely good, and some very neat effects. still the music didnt fetch me and the demo was way too long. the cool parts was "over-exposed". i got bored with them

This Finnish orchestra of design and music makes me proud of being born by a Finnish woman!
MFX and Kewlers styles blended with a kick-ass soundtrack couldn't be wrong, really nice work lads!

just the right xmix feel... looping short videoclips is teh shit.. I missed some more garish colours and perhaps some silly transitions to make it even more xmix (am I right here?). The lazer dolphin was a blast

very conceptional and unluckily highly underrated demo. the problem is too many people dont know about those x-mix vhs tapes, i actually only got to know after uncle-x told me. and hugs for some REAL music.

Trippy MFX production :)

although not my style, it would deserve a (much) better place. technically the best pc demo at breakpoint

Really nice effects here and then (and many of them), nice filters too, although I guess they were wasted on the bigscreen. It's a little long maybe, and don't use the pc speakers - must have been nice down there, should have won.

captures the corniness of the x-mix tapes with realtime grace. It's been a while since I've seen badly animated swimming creatures (bar those found in amiga demos)

X-MIX-4: Dave Angel
"Beyond The Heavens"
is one of my favourite mixed CDs.

I don't have original VHS or DVD but i'm fan of X-Mix series since 1996.
MTV and Viva played some X-Mix clips between 199?-2000 i think.
Now music channels show only cheesy trance, bounce hiphop or boysband videos:(
I want "Electronic Beats" back!!!!!!!!

definetly nice try mfx!!!!

Yah ! love the VHS head alignment simulation and the whole Xmix vibe ...

I'd never think I'd ever thumb up a checkerboard or a wobbly dolphin but here it is ;)
rulez added on the 2004-04-16 01:24:08 by Weyland Yutani Weyland Yutani
Very interesting to watch!
But those fast scene switches combined with the intense noise is probably too much for a tired scener to enjoy for ten minutes. Even though it is not surprising this only ranked fourth, it is still disappointing it did not rank higher.

Nice to see a demo with some laser-like light effects! The dolphins were interesting too. All in all this is very good technically as well as designwise.

mfx and kewlers did it again! you guys are great! some parts are really ugly, but xmix videos were ugly as well ;) the whole djset is great and the last two tunes and the visuals of them (metal things his, laser scene..) are REALLY cool!

It's the true compo winner!!

Best from breakpoint, best from anywhere in quite a while. This is the landmark demo that will define early 2004. I don't understand why it placed 4th, but maybe it was a had-to-be-there kind of experience. Regardless, MFX/Kewlers has a demo that can beat your demo.

In response to those saying this was too long, what surprised me wasn't the length by its ability to stay interesting despite. It builds such a mood that I just grew more and more curiuos to see how it would resolve (raytraced lasers rule!) This demo is long, but not monotonous.

Top praise and kudos. I love this demo.

respects technically-wise. excellent artwork, great "bad vhs tape"-simulation and you really caught the xmix-style in there.
but guys: it's sooooooooooooooooo long and boring. make it about 1/3 the length and it definitely would've won

For all those who don't know what x-mixes are, check out for example Animationtrip.com / Thematic music-driven videos. There should be atleast some sample clips and stuff...

2 it was really really hard to actually watch this all the way through it was so damn boring

3 the colour-shift tv type thing effect was the only thing i liked

4 and the lasers were nice

huh. first I thought: ugh, dolphins. ugh, buddhas. then I thought: why is it so boring and so long? a demo is not a VJ-set!
But then I realized it's some sort of hommage to boring videos from the 90s and there are also a few nice scenes (like the one with the blue light-rays). Also the buggy VHS/RGB stuff is nice. Makes a weak thumb up.

VHS filter is very good! novative, i like a lot the little corner wich disapear sometimes on top-left
dolphin idea sucks and is bad animated
perhaps too long sometimes, looping same scenes
music is not very good, too much old fashionned for my taste (i dislike 1983 teckno ;] )
blue lazershow scene is very cool
like old 80's movie clips done by computer, thumb up for vhs filter, 80's athmosphere and finished/worked result.

bwahaha. i love dirty video. if you've seen vj videos like the stuff on animationtrip.com and moonshine.com, this is totally it... crossfades, raytraced spheres/chessboards, cheezy dolphins swimming in space.. even the stupid spinning logo in the corner. :) if you haven't seen any, you probably won't get it. just add the occasional loss of frame or chroma, and a "stop" indicator/blue screen at the end, and i'll be in the 90's again.. :) as always, if it's good enough for bjerte it's good enough for me.

finally.. i always wished somebody would write an x-mix adaption as a realtime product since 1995, when i made first encounters with the original tapes... all "the scene" could offer me back then was silly stuff as dope by complex.. *g*
now THIS is marvellously well executed and has all the atmosphere, attention to detail and seriously well written electronic music my mind has always been lurking for.
all available thumbs up for this and shame on everybody not giving their vote.
the only negative aspect is the lenght - it actually should've featured 10++ tracks and at least 30mins of lenght. =)

this demo is the one that will be remembered from breakpoint 2004 still after years. like with almost all the good stuff out there, on the first watch it feels nice, after a couple more re-watches very good and it still keeps feeling better and better. unlike with lot of original x-mix tapes, the music in this one is really above average - five songs mixed so well together that you can almost smell the scent of vinyl. progression on the visuals is slow, but at the same time synched almost to the perfection - however all that fits so well together in the theme you don't even question the checkerboard, the dolphins and other elements that'd normally be the worst kind of clichés you can include in your demo.

nearly perfectly executed trip back 10 years into mixtapes, with no bigger drawbacks. no doubt the best pc demo released at breakpoint this year.

I have never seen the original X-Mix videos but I do know what they are about. And I think this demo recreates their feeling quite well, I just love to watch X-MIX 2004 over and over again.

I rewatched this recently and I have to add that I SOOOO envy those guys for their composition skills. There's not a single pixel unused on the screen, everything is done very tight but not overcrowded or oversynchonized, and GOD DAMN it looks great. I wish I'd know if I saw any of the original XMix tapes. (Been watching a lot of CG/animated stuff around that time, maybe I saw that as well.)
MFX and Kewlers once again won the party after the party. Seems to be their habit now.

I don't know why everyone likes this one, but it's really boooring! I would have expected more of a cooperation of two of the best groups there are, but this is just a really lame techno video with nothing special about it, neigther technical nor in the contents. You can do far better!

some wanabee-oldskoOlz-coz-it's-fun peoles voted against quality and it's a real shame. The PC demo was not of a so high quality but I have to admit that this one simply kicks ass. It's exactly the kind of demo which reveals itself times after times.
Their are tons of details in it that makes the experience so impressive.
It's one of my favorite demo ever and deserved to be the 1st.
But it was not FR-025 which kicks your ass right from the first time you watch it (and eventually gets boring...)

+ it makes me trip in 90's when we were watching at Laser CD or VHS videos (mind's eye, ... ;)

My goodness, this sure rattles on forever and a day.

Gotta admit, I hate the style of music. And every single scene moves, spins, whatever, around dead center. Not very imaginative and considerably weakens the visuals.

However, the video distortion, including the occasional warping of the top left corner, was neato. And I have to give Kewlers and MFX credit for always trying to do something a step away from the usual demoscene fare.

It droned on and on. The "old crappy VHS recording that was made on a used tape" effect wore thin on me after the first 15-30 seconds. The music was monotonous.

One of my favourites. I am so impressed by the work they've put into this, to make it so close to an authentic x-mix on VHS as possible. Even the background noise from the VHS tape is there. The music is superb; sounds like it was made in the early 90s. And the visuals are perfect. The 3d models look like they're taken straight out from a x-mix and the rgb distortion reminds me of my good old VHS player (it sucked). Thumbs up deluxe!

X-Mix 3 was the second CD I've ever bought and I still fire it up occasionally, too bad the booklet is all glued up from some juice I poured all over it while on acid sometime mid 90's. Great idea for the demo, effects are sharp and minimal techno kicks ass and overall the prod does feel like the original XMix and 3Lux series. Feels good to be thrown back there, I could do without the VHS noise though, eyes hurt.
