Pretty much the best PC 4k I've ever seen.

There were many good 4k:s (in my opinion) but this sure deserved to win.
rulez added on the 2003-08-10 16:25:02 by break break
Yes. Deserved to win. I don't think this is the best PC 4k I've seen but the best Linux one. The music is as good as in Amiga 4k's.

Actually it's by fit and bandwagon. Excellent 4k anyway.

This was amazing, by far the best 4k I've ever seen. Judging by the beginning I was expecting some artsy minimalism crap but when the demo begun properly my jaw nearly hit the floor.

The first good Linux 4k I've ever seen -- not the world's best 4k IMHO but it's a good one. :-)

I've uploaded a Windows port to scene.org, but at the time of writing they don't seem to have moved it out of /incoming yet. :-)

The intro really kicks, I could see now the Windows port (you'll need SDL.dll!). The sound quality could be imo better (maybe a problem with the port).

But does it still fit the term '4k intro' when you need the SDL stuff under both Linux and Windows?
added on the 2003-08-11 15:46:10 by Crest Crest
Crest, yes, because sdl.dll ist just what d3dx.dll is under win ;) (well, not really, but you should get the point...)

Oh, and the intro rocks of course. One of the best 4k tunes too. :)

Mega Cool!
rulez added on the 2003-08-11 16:27:10 by night_ night_
People have complained about the sound on the Windows port, but AFAIK it should be identical (it's the exact same .asm file spitting out 44100hz 16-bit stereo samples), and the one person I know who has access to both Linux and Windows machines right now have confirmed they sound the same :-) Perhaps something about the sound on the demoshow/realmedia stream or something :-)

sesse's win32 port crashes over here (leaving the desktop at 640*480*256c - evil)
so where's my mac port, antti & markku ;)
rulez added on the 2003-08-11 16:56:59 by saffron saffron
It crashes if SDL.dll is not in an accessible path (fsg limitation :-) ) or if your OpenGL drivers are very very bad. (Mac port will be quite hard, I'd believe, as most of this is pure asm :-P)
added on the 2003-08-11 18:21:33 by Sesse Sesse
Windows version of SDL needs larger sample buffer at least with some sound cards. On the other hand, too large a buffer ruins the synchronization.

friol: Kewl! Please post a link when it's done ;v)

Updating the drivers and/or setting sound card acceleration on has usually helped with the SDL small buffer problem.

First of all, thanks for all the positive feedback. Checked the win32 port on my W98, seems to be ok, but not identical. The sample plotter keeps jumping for one and the bass line sounds weird. There's also something wrong with the object outlines, but that might be an OpenGL mistake of mine. Nice work anyway, I'm surprised the port is under 4096 bytes. We'll probably be working on ports of our own at some time. Marq has a C version of the softsynth, so a Mac port will be available too. :)

We're quite surprised this turned out such a hit. It's about time they fixed the credits here though. :)

Best production so far this year... (followed up by zoom3).

Probably one of the best productions in general, and that its a 4k and not a demo is just a plus.

The Windoze version is under development, but requires further work because most sound drivers seem to suck bigtime.
added on the 2003-08-14 21:44:07 by Marq Marq
Ok... SDL and our code might suck as well ;v) But nevertheless, why is it for Windows that small buffer sizes fail? OSX is happy with 1k block and with Linux you can go down to 512 bytes with about any soundcard.

For me the specialty of this product was in that it was just so very different from the other 4k entries and just about any other 4k entry I've seen. It looks beautiful in a pure, minimalistic way and joins nice music and visuals in a pleasing way.

Pretty much the first 4k intro I've seen which promotes design and style and for that I believe it deserves the special mention given to it by the Alternative Party. My only complaint perhaps is the name which didn't do anything for me.

Interestingly enough, the voters seemed to agree. For once!

SDL? Come on. This sucks really.

@Tomeas: D3DX links static. So it's not like SDL.
sucks added on the 2004-04-06 14:31:27 by EvilOne EvilOne
I think it's quite pointless to argue against SDL here:
1. SDL was allowed in the compo rules
2. It would have been possible to do the same with GLX/OSS for example but then it would have been Linux only. Multiplatform is the way to go.
3. Nag nag nag. Do you really think the whole prod was done with a single call to SDL_Make4kIntro()?
added on the 2004-04-07 08:13:55 by Marq Marq
Marq, it's surely not SDL_Make4kIntro(). I think, it's just not fair, thats all.
added on the 2004-04-07 08:25:17 by EvilOne EvilOne
you missed the point anyway.
added on the 2004-04-07 09:20:04 by tomaes tomaes
d3dx is not a dll, but glu is.
and anyway, you can't really do much more with d3dx apart from not having to write your own matrix/vector/texture routines which wouldn't take up that much space anyway.
as far as I see, SDL was only used for opening the window and replaying the music. sure, it can be natively ported to windows, hell it even may've reached ~4k there, but if their choice was Linux, then it was probably the best way to choose sdl since it's small (few imports) and it's considered a part of the OS anyway... same way as people think about directx or opengl libraries under windows.

"Heh, you dolts, just remember how big an installation of DX is :)"

Yes, and do you know that SDL is a platform abstraction layer, and not a direct route to the hardware? It's simply made to make stuff easier. And those who bitch about "well, we need it to be multiplatform", take a trip with the clue-train. you can allways do the abstraction youself. And no juhees, SDL is NOT directx for linux. Visit their webpages, they are located at www.libsdl.org. Do you find ANY claims of being directx for linux? It is a damn abstractionlayer. The fact that a shitload of crappy linux-dorks choose to use it for their pathetic mmorgs and whatnot don't change shit. SDL don't bring anything new into the system except fuckin abstraction.

Asswhipes.

kusma: isn't DirectX an abstraction of the hardware? I don't care as a coder if there are more layers between SDL and the hardware than between DirectX and the hardware. I don't care how it is technicaly done, all i care is how i can use it (as a coder) and from this point of view SDL is like DirectX (without an own 3D API, you have to use OpenGL).

How the hell would one make a 64k for Linux anyways?

I think the problem with sizelimited prods on Linux systems is that there is no standard whats so ever for a clean Linux system.

If SDL is included with the Linux system in the compospecs then it obviously is OK to use. If it's not then.. Ofcourse -no.

And yes- comparing SDL with DirectX is stupid, DX is a direct abstraction layer against drivers, SDL is a second abstractionlayer.

Cool tune, and nice synched animation. But a bit more content or some more (a second) effects would have been desirable for an „best 4k intro”!

don't like it, the effect is great but looks way way too aliased and messy. the music is pretty average for its time, which to me pretty much translates to 'bad'. i also think the visualization on the ground makes it look really kitschy.

I could not get this version to 4K, it's currently 7990 bytes including embedded depacking shellscript. Any hints ?

-----

I'm going to thumb this up, I enjoyed watching it and it's a 4K for Linux, which was not something easy to do.
