The group was/ is listed as smash, I added their new name and some demos.

This one is a nice story type of demo. Nice graphics, good music and very enjoyable. Get it and enjoy!
mixed smash and smash designs together, thanks

if you really want to see a demo from smash designs, don't waste your time with sleepless, and watch event horizon instead ...
sleepless is simply boring, technically correct, but boring ...

It is a reaaly nice demo, with a good story.
And the music is very good.

MASTERPIECE !!!! This demo is masterpiece. That is all. Very cool story, smooth design super music. Smash designs hits the Mekka Symposium again. More demo-brilliants like this, please....
I liked this demo very much! I know that perhaps some of the gfx are ugly, but I enjoyed it very much and I runned it again and again!

The thing that perhaps rocked me the most to like this demo was the atmospheric music!

But I also liked very much some parts, like the tree with the rays, the voxels, the boat, the models and especially their animations.

Personally I prefered this demo than the two Haujobb demos which were good, but it's boring for me to see 1 of the same sucking demotrends (Lot's of transparency layers again and again..) and I found more interesting to watch the Sleepless demo..

Ohh,. btw.. I will go and check if the other favorite of mine on Mekka&Symbosium is already added in this list, or not.. the Nature Suxx Demo by FAN(TTS/Oxyron(C64) is in FAN, and I wan't to see more demos from you guy!!! Please =)

I LOVE this demo :)
the music is fantastic (especially the stereo version), the code is awesome, the textures could be better but wtf :)
and also great designwise, i love the transition from space to voxels in the final version ...
definitely one of my favorite demos ever ...

A very cool demo with a neat 3d-engine and a kickass soundtrack. Kb has done his miracle again with the sound part.!!!
rulez added on the 2001-06-29 21:52:52 by zafos zafos
Nice demo. But does the story have a meaning? Anyway, cool 3dengine! and great music!
rulez added on the 2001-07-10 00:16:15 by oldaccount oldaccount
i don't like that, it's just a stupid 3d story demo with badly implemented scene-effects and techno music on a mainstream level.

The music ROCKS!!!!
added on the 2001-11-14 23:24:03 by zafos zafos
how could you say that, robotriot? it's so much easier to say 'this is badly implemented' that to tell why or show the way it is and could be. yes, the demo is not downtright twice pragmatic as considered its meaning, but hey, didn't you catch that the sence of it all is that soft rendering still can kick ass narowmind accelerated slush? sleepless is full of enthusiasm and other strong feelings and poor is one who does not feel it.
added on the 2001-11-20 15:26:35 by crs crs
what's the problem ? o.k, this demo lacks some design but telling it's technically not impressive is lame. just look at the volumetric light effect with the tree. and the music kicks, too.
a nice demo.
rulez added on the 2001-11-22 21:34:34 by styx^hcr styx^hcr
Erm, I finally have to admit that this demo rocks. :) My first reaction after seeing this was quite similar to robotroit's; Not-that-great models, typical euro-dance soundtrack, plus a more or less pointless (and kitschy ;)) story.

BUT, after seeing it for a second time, I noticed that everything fits together very well, the music makes your body move (erm) and the transitions are great.

Still, the loading breaks are annoying (they break the flow of the demo) and the models look a little bit crappy, but hey... simply put: Cool. :)
rulez added on the 2001-11-24 15:14:08 by tomaes tomaes
Yeah, this one roxx! 'bout the story however, is there a point I'm not getting?, 'cos seems quite pointless to me. Oh, and the music is quite good.
rulez added on the 2001-11-24 22:25:41 by Nezbie Nezbie
Intro music is average, the rest is quite good. I liked the whole feel of this demo. Some parts show very good design, like the girl walking by a bouncing ball, opening the shades and then touching the mirror... It is impressive that the software renderer runs quite well even in 640x480x32. There are a little design flaws imho like, why a tux guy and a swim suit girl? :-) The part where the girl rows in the sea is stopped rather suddenly. Also, the guy's head and the girl's body could use some more modeling work...

Anyway, it's rather long but I couldn'y say boring because I saw it twice in a row without problem... So I guess you should see this... :-)

Cool prods.
A code's being quick and the considered design were impressive.
I liked the story of this demo.

added on the 2001-11-28 11:56:38 by zafos zafos
this demo is phat :) software-rendering is nice, and running smooth on a PII450 in 640x480x32 is also very nice, when you think about the fact both the softsynth and the gfx-renderer are battling for cpu-time :)
And about the whole "design"-thingy: 5 layers of transparent effects doesn't necesserily mean anything else than annoyance. but if mess is to define design, ok with me.
rulez added on the 2001-12-06 03:40:40 by lug00ber lug00ber
lugOOber: There is no (realtime)-softsynth. This would actually make no sense at all in a demo.
added on the 2001-12-06 08:27:47 by tomaes tomaes
nope, this is ofcourse a realtime MP3 softsynth! :)
added on the 2001-12-06 09:37:53 by ryg ryg
I like it. I don't normally see demos like this, with a story to follow... reminds me of around the time when Genocide (or however they spelled it) came out.

About the software rendering.. To me personally, low-res and pixelation has never bothered me much.. but low bit-depth and bad antialiasing has somewhat...
The norm sometimes begins to sway me into preferring the higher-res stuff, until I realize that it isn't actually any more visually appealing to me personally. So yeah, software rendering can do just fine for me :) It might have trouble for lots of objects though..
rulez added on the 2002-02-18 18:33:26 by bigcheese bigcheese
Oh yeah. I had a lot of fun playing around with the display modes in the non-final version (dos only). I particularly enjoyed the CGA version. Why don't I see it in the final?

Great engine, cool modelling + animation, music by KB (read: fscking awesome! :)...

However, I wonder why this isn't called "Senseless" instead :) Sorry, guys, storyline could be better :)
rulez added on the 2002-02-25 10:23:53 by Gargaj Gargaj
A really well coded and modeled software-rendered demo. Quite nice, and it has a bit of a storyline, albeit a *weak* storyline... I found the music to be the weakest element by far.

After having watched this several times more, I have to say that the music actually rocks :-)

As before, the concept is great and the only drawback is imho the models which could be better.

thumbs up for software rendering

thumbs down for really SHITTY MUSIC (no offence)
...energetic but shitty
very good music, i love this water effect in the sea
the rest is a little bit slow in rythm, and textures are not fanstastic
but all stay coherent, it will be a classic in few years i think

It's not bad for a 3D production.
Check the envelopes on the bones though, I don't think they were adjusted quite right, especially on the guy character's legs :)
Worth the DL, IMHO the music is the best part.

The only Smash Designs windows demo I've ever seen, due to the fact that it's the only one I've ever gotten running. Mediocre plot, nice engine, great music and a cool freedir voxel. I especially liked the transition to the voxelscape.. thumbs up for that :)

I usually dislike prods with this kind of emotional plot, but I remember I clapped my hands off at the partyplace.
The music makes the whole atmosphere, and some of the effects are simply awesome. Plus, it runs on my machine at insane resolution in 2004 :D

I like parts of kb's soundtrack and can see a lot of work went into this (some appreciable technical feats as well) but I'm not big on storydemos and I don't see anything special to make me like this one more than the others either. Most storydemos really fall short in that they lack any interesting story and this one's no exception.

Aged badly. It's the problem with that kind of 99% 3D flyby stuff these guys keep on doing through the years.
Sure, software rendering rules, so do some of the effects featured in this kinda long prod, but tis one is definitely not my taste. And I must say I found the soundtrack pretty terrible here, sorry ;)

Quite impressive use of ressources given that this is software rendering, and the atmosphere and direction is great. Didn't like the textlines (i prefer scenes to speak for themselves), and the framerate varies a lot on a per scene basis.

Overally, thumbs up.

Hmmm .. not sure what to think about this one. It's "just" rather low-poly 3D scenes that look like something out of a N64 game, and the parts seem a bit disparate. Not my cup of a tea, really, though software rendering is kinda cool, but then again does it matter so much. Hmm.
