outperforms .kkrunchy, at least as far as I can tell (tested on a couple random small .exe files)

Excellent! Let the 64k exe packer competition begin. Ryg rested a long time on his kkrunchy fame without anybody even trying to challenge him.

I did some tests with various MSVC exes (20-300k). Most of them were actually packed better with kkrunchy, but there were also exceptions. I guess AND would have to explain a bit more how to optimize code and data for his packer.

hm, some results from my testcase suite: (which i use for finetuning+regression testing)

  • che guevara (prerelease ver): apk2 59328b, kk0.23a2 56832b
  • kings of the playground: apk2 59696b, kk0.23a2 58368b
  • fresnel: apk2 54880b, kk0.23a2 52736b
  • kkrieger inbetween ver: apk2 couldn't pack, kk0.23a2 91136b
  • memories from the mcp: apk2 67376b, kk0.23a2 64512b
  • candytron: apk2 58320b, kk0.23a2 55808b
  • project genesis: apk2 62576b, kk0.23a2 54784b (woa)
  • fr-019: apk2 55216b, kk0.23a2 51712b
  • salmiakki final (or whatever, some version alkama sent me once :): apk2 132448b, kk0.23a2 130560b

that's all i tested - no selection done based on results. all sizes are sizes of actual output .exe files. seems kkrunchy is still slightly better for intros, atleast the ones in my testcase collection (which i know is somewhat unfair because i use them for tuning, as said; then again, i didn't do much value-tweaking in the last 2 years).

the (de)packer is certainly on the slow side though - kk0.23a2 is based on the same general algorithm (context mixing+neural network weighting, paq-style), but i used very simplistic context models to minimize memory usage (about 2.5mb in my case) and maximize speed. i think 17s depacking for a 64k is somewhat excessive (several of the 64ks i named are in that range), but that could be called a matter of taste :)

anyway, thumbs up for finally getting some serious competition :)

quite impressive to see zoom3 being so small with this packer.

I recompress squish.exe by kkrunchy, and i get 51712 bytes file without ugly decompressing bar on the screen. Who's next? :)
added on the 2006-11-01 15:55:06 by Bux Bux
correction of my above posting, not all apk2-packed exes crash under vista, it's just that nearly all of them crash during decompression, but they do that on other machines too :) - of the intros listed above, only fresnel and project genesis don't crash during depacking (on all my machines).

Neat. Might possibly be useable for a 96k game or such.

This version of apk2 is great! I've been impressed. Decompression bar eats 176 bytes from file, and i always turn it off.
rulez added on the 2007-07-17 15:05:30 by Bux Bux
The new version seem to compress better than kkrunchy but some of the exe are crashing also the depacking bar is just throwing bytes away for nothing.

yay.
rulez added on the 2007-07-17 15:39:38 by las las
Great compression ratio, comparable to kkrunchy023a3 (45904 for apk2 vs 45568, on a prod I'm working on). However, it crashes when the intro starts, so piggy for now. It would be also nice to toggle off the decompression bar, unless there's a switch I missed.

Think, it's cool tool for packing intros, but it's bad for packing hand-made soft. Time of decompressing is too high for them.

very good tool. on the oficial AND's site can be founded the newer version of tool, that more stable.thumb up!
