The original uses a packer which only works on Windows-9x versions. To get it running on Windows XP, execute the included windows xp versions. Note that the intro only runs under an administrator account and that it will give an error message at the end when it tries to execute the mag itself (I tried renaming the files to force the unshrinked intro.exe to start the unshrinked JTF.exe, but that gave a different error message, so just start the mag manually after running the intro)

The mag itself is just a warez chartsmag, not interesting for demosceners. However, this time they added an intro, hency my thumb up :-)

The background music used in the mag itself is still the same as in issue #2 and #3.

So you're going through these archives on scene.org and adding your own executables to them Sparcus?

Do you have the permission of the original authors? If not, seems kinda lame to me...

Even if you do it's kinda like rewriting history.

Yes I realize scene.org adds scene.org.txt to all archives too, but at least anyone with half a brain realizes that it's just an advertisement that was added afterwards, and well... I've always thought adding that text file is pretty lame too.

Jeez, I'm not changing anything, just adding depacked version of the exes so people can run 'm on windows XP. Just trying to be helpful here. Rewriting history? I'm trying to preserve it :-(

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what you're doing. Just not how you're doing it.

I guess it's some sort of philosophical thing about the actual archive being intact being important... Something similar to Walter Benjamin's concept of aura or whatever...

And where do we draw the line? Should Amiga demos come bundled with WinUAE? I know it's an extreme example but you get the point.

And btw, don't get this wrong, I'm not changing files that were already on scene.org (I would never do that). I uploaded these files myself.

But I do get your point, I'll remove the files again. Of course this is kinda insane because warez people themselves never give a fuck about permissions and this means that probably no-one will bother to watch these things anymore because they don't run on XP, but hey, have it your way :-(

But they have the same filename and replace the old one... So I fail to see a difference.

They don't replace old ones because there were no old ones on scene.org. I uploaded them after I noticed that the links here on pouet were dead (Irokos had moved the files on untergrund.net). Then I got a bit enthousiastic while testing them out and realizing that they didn't work, sorry about that :-)

Anyhow, my previous comment was a bit harsh, I hadn't seen your second comment yet. Now that I think of it you actually do have a good point. Like I said, I'll fix it.

Ok, done, removed the win-xp versions. If you want to watch it on Windows XP then get a tool like DeShrink and use it to unpack the executable.

And it's not like for example amiga demos weren't AGA or hard drive fixed..

tribe, you are inspiring me with your ruthless fundamentalism! the scene is indeed in grave danger! we must make sure to remove all altered demos from pouet and scene.org! because alteration is the root of all demoscene evil! now that we have tackled this blatant depacking fraud by the evil villain sparcus, i suggest we point our guns at all heathen diskimages! to hell with practicality, it's all about philosophy!!!!11

in other news: sparcus, please put those files back, coz this shit dont run on my box. :)

Okay, i dont really understand tribe's statements, but whatever. I'll let the link as it is now, and add others, so that everyone will be happy. What sparcus did was good, allowing anyone who runs a winXP box to run that prod is a good job, and i would'nt bother asking whoever to modify any exe for it to work under a recent OS as long as the credits are still the same.

Sorry, I missed out the fact that the old ones were on untergrund.

Yes, ever heard of this debate being gone through when talking about them a gazillion times back when BBS's weren't dead? ;) When I ran my BBS I though about the issue myself for a while and decided to not add any advertisements (but however not to remove other BBS's advertisements, what some sysops were doing...)

I have nothing against fixes and such... But what I want is that all original archives that still exist should be preserved without alterations. Sure they may just be relics of history that only collector nerds are interested in, but it's our history and we're all nerds anyway. I fully support an alternative download for a WinXP port, so as things are now is the way to go.

Anyway, the discussion is starting to really not concern this particular prod anymore so if someone still has something to say maybe it should be moved to the discussion boards...

Finally, thumbs up for the mag (and sparcus' xp port!) ;)

Actually, I agree with Tribe. The way I handle it if I f.e. fix/singlefile some Amiga intros is to have a separate .zip/.lha inside the archive with the fixed stuff. This way, the original archive is preserved and you can still use the fixed version if you want. :)
