good art, but a bit... well, eventless. plus, i still hate that depth-of-field look :/

Interesting design and very nice graphics, specially at the beginning. I also like the little cube. :-) But I agree with Gargaj, something is missing. The music fits but is also way too boring for me. Could have been a killer demo with some more effects.

Well that was fun... it runs in slideshow mode even at 640x480 with all the quality settings turned to ugly. I demand a 320x240 8bit interlace mode for us poor spurned gf5 series owners.

From the video on the intel site (the one that lacks sync), it looks great quality wise but perhaps lacks a little direction - the scenes lasted a little long I think.

Still a very solid thumb up, perhaps I'll change my mind when I see a decent video (or find that vista laptop with the decent gpu, think it's been abandoned under a pile of paper somewhere)

great gfx as usual, but not my favourite fairlight demo..

agree with gargaj. great art (and a nice fluid/gas flow effect), but it feels completely disconnected and random. to be sure, track one also had this to a degree, but where track one only had a few scenes that didn't fit together with the rest of the demo (i.e. the walker and end "road" scenes), this one seems to be all leftovers with no real purpose or intention at all.

what's left is slick but completely soulless, and despite the quality work from everyone involved, i just can't bring myself to thumb it up.

for the brilliant fluid effect and non less brilliant 3d models!

the dof hurts my eyes. apart from that the scenes look ultra fresh, but they lack connection and flow

Nice artwork, models and concept and really great fluid smoke effect but as it is 25mb I really expected much more.

Weak thumb up mainly for that smoke effect.

I found this to be really good. It's got two advanced effects apart from the shading and i think the cameras were good: usually, demoscene productions have the tendency to overdo the "direction"; It's typical for anyone learning a new skill to do too much of it. In this demo, it's done in a more subtle way, I think. There are fast transitions and then slower moments where you are actually being given the opportunity to see whats going on. 'cause in this demo, there is nothing to hide.

I generally dislike static bitmap masks, but I learned how to mentally filter them out.
rulez added on the 2007-07-02 19:15:41 by Hyde Hyde
In some of the scenes dof is a bit overused and textures on 3d models are sometimes really low quality stuff. On the other hand I LOVE vector-style 2d art and amazing fluid effect so I'll thumb it up! :)
rulez added on the 2007-07-02 19:21:08 by masterm masterm
Ah... I only saw the video but what I saw was excellent. It is a cross between track1 and TBL. And reminds me of Moppi productions.

This and the Still demo are my favourites.

too slow on my system, but i liked the beginning :(

What Navis said regarding the Track1/Moppi mix. Great visuals but a bit empty. I like the smoke effect and the music.

nice visuals, except the logos at the beginning, 80ies Swedish graff style, that didnt fit in, and didnt look that nice in the first place.

Didnt quite get this demo, it was nice and all, but it didnt do anything for me.

Holy Jesus fuck! One of the most stylish demos ever!!! I love demos like this where the team have really thought about the direction and design, and where the graphics and code interact so well.

I'm blown away!

However, it crashed my PC on exit and I had to do a hard reset. Normally I'd be pissed off and throw a tantrum, but it was worth it.
rulez added on the 2007-07-02 19:43:15 by Shanethewolf Shanethewolf
Looks good, sounds good - a bit boring, and I know I do not have a fast gfx card, but it runs too slow here for the content shown...
anyway - can't thumb this down ;)

nicely accurated and executed FX, but poor synch and lack of dinamism.
overused dof stuff.
Actually a huge work behind.
rulez added on the 2007-07-02 20:04:06 by JaK JaK
Yeah looks and sounds quite good but the demo isn't really going to any direction. So no thumbs any direction.

Awesome graphics and the smoke effect kicks ass. A little more synch woudn't hurt though, but that's just my personal perversion ;)

Absolutely excellent artwork, interesting scenes and effects (the smoke effect looks quite cool), but somehow without the fitting pace (which I would expect especially with the CNCD brand on it). Something is missing.

cool, I enjoyed it a lot more than the video, there is quite a lot of details here and there. I guess I have to update my gfx card (radeon 9800, still quite slow; ironically the navier-stokes thing is the fastest effect :). The images look clean, I like it.

omg. the style. awesome. fantastic. incredible. the diggers. that green guy. the effects. code. all killer. KILLER!
at the same time i feel no kind of emotion whatsover. it fails so miserably to direct the parts into a whole that it makes me angry. the sound and the visuals act like complete strangers and some scenes scream "synch me" so loud that it hurts. don't get me wrong - i am so mad because this is so F***ING good that i just can't stand to see such potential get wasted by the overall execution. again.
one day fairlight will make that one demo where everything comes together just naturally and becomes so much greater than the sum of its parts. the one demo to end all demoscene. but not today.
take the piggie as the worst imaginable punishment.

Piggy for this. Quite a typical production from the "new" Fairlight. Great music but otherwise quite boring without any wow factor.

It seems that it crashes only on my config :P (P4 HT, GF7800 GTX, WinXP Pro). Anyways after watching video ... I must say that's the best use of GPU fluid simulation I've seen so far (everyone else is using pink colours for this effect?!?). Moreover I liked the overall design touch expressed in foregrounds and backgrounds. And the lighting rocks. I didn't like some weird animations (especially robot arm), which got boring after couple of seconds and that the scenes are not coherent. Thumb up from me.
rulez added on the 2007-07-02 22:43:03 by bonzaj bonzaj
I sort of agree that there is something lacking. It's a bit too relaxing for the style or something. However, visually breathtaking, extremely nice style, graphics and music make this really enjoyable. I love fairlight demos.

note: the video on the intel demo page doesn't do justice to this demo. It's so much better watching it on real pc.
rulez added on the 2007-07-02 22:47:45 by z5 z5
I agree with ryg. And it even stays too long in that scene with the robot and cranes behind. Even if good looking, boring. At least the fluid motion effect was good..

Very weird. really agreeing with fiver2 and ryg.
@hyde: you are perfectly right: there is nothing to hide here. If would see ANY of the visuals in an art book, would buy it. But then, that just like it feels: Like very excellent print stuff. And unlike the last intel compo I don't have to watch it a thousand times to see all the stuff that's going on. But on the other hand, it should be an animation, shouldn't it?

Ah what gives.. Thumb down for the code. I dont get why only fairlight demos have memory leaks, appear unneccesarily slow even due to low poly count etc.. I can only suspect that the code is not up to par.

though I have to agree that the certain "catch"-factor is missing, the overall look is just too good for not giving it a thumb up. and I disagree with gargaj here - the DOF rocks =)
btw, no legal problems with the caterpillar stuff?
rulez added on the 2007-07-03 10:15:52 by styx^hcr styx^hcr
The DOF varies quite a bit depending on resolution and anti-aliasing settings. On highest aa + resolution I like it (it's more subdued and subtle) but then the rest of the demo crawls whereas on half-resolution and 2 point aa it's a bit too deep.

if anyone is getting the full-on system crash at the end, please do let me know some system info (gfxcard, driver, what mode you ran it in etc). naturally it doesn't happen here, but if we can find it we'll do a fixed version (that might even have some speed tweaks and fixes and so on).
added on the 2007-07-03 10:29:13 by smash smash
The first 15-20 seconds of this is really really stylish, and Destop is just too fucking good for his own good. But then, enter Bob the Builder...

Cool smoke though, and kudos for staying with one scene longer than what is usual these days. I hope that pisses a lot of people off. Really.

smash: took my computer down into black unresponsiveness in the end (Core2Duo E6600, 2GB, GF7900GT, WinXP Pro 32bit, ran it at 1600x1200)

Still have to make up my mind about the demo itself, I'm still undecided between being awestruck because of the scenes or bored to death because of the direction. We'll see.

Ok, in the video, with all the flickering and jerking gone, it actually looks somewhat nice. Great beginning, but then it goes nowhere.. The smoke fx in the background is nice.

I think that if the "depth of field" effect (close+far object blur) was toned down/removed, there would be a HUGE speed increase. alas, I could not find such an option.

and I might relate to it better, if they were komatsus instead of caterpillars. cant recall the last time i saw a caterpillar.

My big respect for the cool graff logo at the beginning faded a bit when I yesterday stumbled on a font called "cancontrol" on http://www.acidfonts.com/cfonts2.htm ... :) scnr... Okay, with this compo the deadline had to really be met, so any time saving is welcome, and the composition looks great nevertheless. And I admit, I also occasionally use sample CDs as sources when making music. :)

sire: if you genuinely cannot tell the difference between a low quality generic graffiti font and a superb hand-modelled logo, considering pretty much the only thing they have in common is "they're both graffiti influenced", i dont know what to say to you. it made me laugh, but at the same time made me feel slightly depressed at the state of the scene if well known sceners can't tell the difference between something good and something rubbish. :)
it'd be like me saying, "hey, you stole the music for your demo from the cheeky girls! their music is 'electronic' too, so they must be the same thing..".

bear in mind that telling a graffiti artist they did their logo with a graffiti font would be about the same level of diss as telling a classical composer they stole their latest overture from a bontempi organ preset. :)

Smash: I know have downloaded and checked the font, and indeed most of it is different from the logo - however except the letter "A", which is really identical, and also the "C" in the logo obviously is a slight modification from the one in the font. As the font was previewed by its name "cancontrol" on acidfonts.com, because of these two letters being represented prominently therein, it was easy to get the impression the font was used completely. Sorry, my mistake, if not totally mistaken, but it's not that big a deal, the logo looks supergreat anyway (and i'ts certainly possible to make great tunes with bontempi organ presets!). I really didn't want to diss you, just tell an observation I made. Now after closer inspection of the case I am glad I can turn back to the initial instant admiration I had for the logo. :)

dlls:
maybe it's just me, but the more external libraries a prod has to use, the less it feels like a demonstration of skill, and more like a cobbling together of other people's stuff. Do you really want a demo with no original coding?
I wet my pants at Evolution of Vision until I realised all the interesting coding was in Intels OpenCV library. Then I thought well, it's nice design, and well executed, so it's still great. This didn't have either.

GbND: what makes you think the DLLs are not made by Fairlight?
bass.dll is a often used lib for sound playback
d3dx9_30 is supplied to enable non-directx-up-to-date people to watch it.
core.dll fxbase.dll piraya.dll are proprietary libs from the demolition demotool.
And i bet lightwave.dll is also the proprietary lightwave importer for demolition.
So whats the problem?
added on the 2007-07-06 21:30:16 by gopher gopher
GbND: Bass.dll and d3dx9_30.dll are standard libraries for music and basic d3d-stuff, respectively. You gain no extra superpowers by using these. For instance, d3dx9_??.dll contains code for loading textures, managing shader-effects and multiplying matrices and other boring tasks modern demos demand.

The rest of the dll's are unknown to me, so I assume they are proprietary Fairlight libraries.

gbnd: all of the dlls except d3dx and bass are made by us. see, it's quite easy and good practice to make a dll out of blocks of code you want to group together. you go to visual studio, create new project, select the dynamic link library option, and then turn left at the clue shop.

I must somewhat agree abit with sire on the font thing. The letters look very simular. But one can clearly see that many letters has been altered and there is alot of "bits and doo-dads" added to the whole piece. But for all we know the artist is just inpired of this style, as it is a wellknown graff-style from sweden back in the 80ies.

And btw, in the demoscene there are not many logos that are made from scratch. So I think its rather picky to complain about a this. But I guess people expect much more from FLT than other groups.

My god, this was BAD!

Seriously, take brilliant graphics, effective modelling, ace effects and bland them with uneventful and meaningless direction. This demo is an unfortunate and sad example of how even the best ingredients don't make a royal dinner if the cook doesn't know in which order to throw in the pieces.

Sorry for harsh critic, but you guys could do so much better. I'll reserve the thumb down as a moral advantage in case you happen to win this compo with name voting. :)

demos don't necessarily have to be deep or tell a story for me... just showing off completely wicked graphics and some nice effects (loved the liquid), combined with fitting music also does the trick for me.
