Seriously, a lot of stuff here ruled. A lot of cool or interesting ideas. I like the crystal blobs, hand with z-buffer, RGB triplete planets and a lot more stuff I have to watch again to remember. I simply love it when once in a while such a massive coderporn demo appears.

Why design when you have Defjam code ;-) Arf SURE this is a nice TRIP 2 atari demos ... Love love this one and the LAMESCREEN makes me laughing ;-) BIg up for all the team

Defjam vs lsl.... who will win? :)

Concerning the comment above: Yeah it feels a bit inconsistent and there are no transitions between parts....

BUT: If you regard it as I did (a traditional ST megademo with different parts) then it becomes a clear winner.

The homage to TCB again was fun (24 hours screen, enchanted lands boot loader), and the rest of the screens' frame rates are unbelievably good!

All in all, I enjoyed it, so here's my thumb!
rulez added on the 2009-05-24 14:47:04 by すすれ すすれ
ugly coder pr0n that goes on for about twice as long as it should. still a thumb up
rulez added on the 2009-05-24 16:03:52 by parcelshit parcelshit
Yeah, great stuff! I especially like the metaballs and the third part of the demo. Transitions between the screens could be better, but who cares. ;-)

Some very nice pixelgraphics here. Overall a bit messy demo. Specially the start allmost made me not see the rest of the demo.

I am glad I did though. :)

amazing code - who could know defjam had more still to come after all these years. and a little bit of design and cool ziq too! sometimes i felt checkpoint demos had a bit too ambitious effects, with a bit too low frame rate.. absolutely not this time!! i enjoyed every moment, who needs falcon? truly this is a masterpiece.

great code.... cool music... horrible design in overall, even though some scenes looked very nice.

As I watch it again and think about the comments I come into the conclusion that this is the proof that coderpr0n is what I really like no matter how bad it's done. There are indeed several parts here not fitting, several things put together harshly, it's really a very rough made demo, yet I love it to death!
added on the 2009-05-24 18:19:08 by Optimus Optimus
For some reason, in the scene with the hand and z-buffer objects, I see the hand inside out, something like the z order not being consistant with what I see on screen.
Guess I'm tired...

I've seen better by BITS... nah.

Awesome demo. One of the best ST demos ever.

This has some really nice parts (and some strange ones).

Incidentally, I'd like to correct some spiritual claims made in this demo.

"There must be an evil king."

That statement makes no sense. Is there one or is there not? You can't tell reality what it "must" do.

Evil kings, anyway, tend to destroy themselves in the long run. They are just too annoying and useless, eventually someone finishes them off.

"If there is a god of gods, he can be defeated."

Defeating god, eh? Hahahahahahahahaha... show me someone who can do that.

It's just awesome. Technically. Acoustically. Graphically.
And yes, it's a bit rought but it features defjam-design at its best.
Love it. Love it! LOVE IT!

honestly, imo, oldschool coderpron also deserves design/better colors/coherence etc.
(not the fault of those nice pixel graphics)
music is also great :D

The overall flow was ruined by the too long parts & boring precalc/loading sequences.
That said, there's some shithot code in there!

I dont get it. I would thumb down but for the fact I feel like I must be missing something. There were only two effects I liked (the hand and the tunnel). Sincerely not trolling here, but I honestly thought the STe was capable of more than this?

really loved it in the compo. sure, it's coderpron, but coderpron with a really good move to it! the awesome music really helped, too.

it was really cool watching this sitting in the middle of a, initially slightly atari-sceptical, crowd of pc sceners who were getting more and more blown away :-) checkpoint really turned some heads here!!
rulez added on the 2009-05-25 11:40:57 by skrebbel skrebbel
I miss some synch/design/script on this, but the code is what it is, dope.
The voxel world, the double textured tunnel, the "background revealing" metaballs and those "separate RGB rendered" planets are just amazing.
You can actually recognize the earth continents on the planets screen, crazy!

Sadly the incoherence of all the parts ruin the show a little,
but that's made up pretty much by the utter c0de pr0n and the tunes (not the sample loops, though). Nice 2D gfx as well.

ugly, inconsistent, long, boring and repetitive parts, the part in the screenshot was particularly horrid. the code/effects give it a thumb up tho.

*fap* *fap* *fap*

there are filler screens and odd moments without any sound.. but the effects are really nice. some news in the chunky world as well on the crazy palette splitting, border breaking, hardware bashing side. i especially loved the commanche voxel. not free-directional, of course.. the st is too slow for that. but the spectrum512 pseudo true colour mode: sweet!!

A big thumb up for the massive code, but there is always some defaults : low framerate, lack of transitions, too long and sometimes boring (decrunch/loader)...

codewise would've been an average c64 demo in the mid 90's if scaling down the speed/etc on some of the fx's to the HW in mind. designwise also totally like the mid 90's c64 demos. freakin mess.

the landscape has an artifical&very bad "perspective". the blobs are the best.

I emailed Zappy/HC that there's new great shit going on ST, so can you make a comeback and show us some true nature of ST coding. Oh, well Zappy replied that he's busy with his own business and stuff, so no time for our Atari ST :(

Now, im really waiting for Leos "revenge" of that starfield :)

I love this demo. Great code, pictures and 200hz music. Superb work!!!
Although - as much as I adore ST - you totally forgot how to make 50hz standard YM music. Next time for parts with 50Hz music you'd better invite Yerzmyey or Factor6 (converting is childish simple).
rulez added on the 2009-06-06 19:29:43 by johny johny
johny: the music is replayed at 50Hz, but using interrupts for the sidlike lead sounds, why not use that when it's entierly possible? :)

Yo, Lo-tek.
Actually I can send You two of my songs converted to Atari ST, to SND. They play exactly like on Spectrum. However I admit I slightly changed "manually" volumes of snare and some leads. In the process I use about 3-4 programs but it's still not so bad situation. ;)
As for the demo, I love the stuff, also all musix, and I don't think they require our help. ;) Although would be nice to help them; it's another question. ;)
rulez added on the 2009-06-10 15:49:09 by YERZMYEY/H-PRG YERZMYEY/H-PRG
OK then, I recorded it.
You can comparison for instance:
original ZX Spectrum AY version
and also
the same song played by Atari ST and YM.
There are some differences on ST but in 99% they don't harm in listenning (with exception of bass in 2:23 time, 2:31 and so on - in this ONE case deformation of bass-FX is louder on Atari ST than on Spectrum. Which is weird).
Much love to Atari ST!
Byez.
Yerz: I remember Tao tried to convert some spectrum tunes a few years ago and they didn't play 100%... wasn't that also tunes sent in by you?
added on the 2009-06-11 08:49:51 by ltk_tscc ltk_tscc
I dunno actually. I tried only 2 of mines, if I recall. They worked OK after some small manual correcting. However that's true I mean only source files from trackers (SoundTracker 1.1, ProTracker, SQ-Ttracker and others). I have never tried anything from 80s games, as I'm not a coder, You know.
The thumb up is for a lot of cool code. looks ugly and drags out for about 4 times longer than it should, but I guess that's forgivable. Some of the "lets make this even cooler"-parts were a turnoff, as the framerate often dropped ridiculously low when the "extra coolness" was added :P

I understand the code is really impressive ; piggy for the lack of transitions / gives the filling to just look at a copy paste of effects without coherence between them
