I watched and I loved ! Best demo ever seen on Amstrad CPC.

For EmuLovers, use Winape (2.0a17) with following settings : set CRTC 1 and "no Plus PPI emulation"

Watch it on a real CPC for maximum enjoyment !

It only work for a bit on the Arnold emulator in OS X, but what I saw was good enough for a thumb. Hoping for a video from a real machine.

I'd say it's perfect but it doesn't work on my both real machines, the CRTC0 6128 and 6128 PLUS. Which is annoying. Who the hell has to get a CRTC1 machine only to watch this demo? It's stupid. Vanity, do (at least) CRTC0 fix, please ... If I had a CRTC2 CPC, I'd say OK ... But I own the most scene preferred CRTC machines, and it doesn't work on them. The CPC scene is small and this demo is so good, that it deserves to run on most CPCs. Btw. the only emul that runs this fine is WinApe :( It fucks up in Arnold on Mac OS X. Annoying again.

This demo is finaly finished !!! The result is really great (MODE 1 powa !) and has a unique polish. The CPC shows incredible coulours in the plasma fx. Love the 3d part too and the coders message scrolling :-)).

It doesnt have a unique polish...but an unique french!....scroller. :) Factor6: All my original 6128 were CRTC 1...i had to "downgrade" them with a CRTC 0 ripped from a 464.... now i finnally i have a demo that runs only on it...total confusion... :D

This prod kick asses !! :)
My only concern (which does not deserve a thumb down after all) is the CRTC1-only constraint : I had to enjoy watching the prod under emu, which considerably decrease overall interest (being a CRTC3 owner).
Great work ! I would love a ALL-CRTC version !

I have to deliver a message from Optimus. Since he has deliberately forgotten his password he can't comment. But for such an amazing surprise he broke the rules and asked me to write something for him instead:

"Finally, a CPC demo that is actually a real demo!!! What we ever needed. I thought I was watching a good quality prod like the ones on the C64. Multipart/trackmo style with good design/gfx/transitions, enough parts, overscan, good effects! Now it paid well I didn't had the CRTC 0 but the 1 instead. Never expected to see such a demo on CPC. Is it maybe time to raise the standards?"

Care to explain the differences between CRTC0, CRTC1 and CRTC2?

Like, is the CRTC1 more poweful than the basic CPC 6128 I had "back in the days"?

Is it possible on CPC to change the address of the video buffer during the VBL ? and what are the restrictions ?
rulez added on the 2009-08-05 03:07:47 by p01 p01
keops> The only difference among the 3 CRTC's is that amstrad changed 3 different chip manufacturers in the life of the cpc. There aren't any technical differences, just different designs that timing critical software (demos) have bugs (out of sync screens, flickering etc...)if the creators doesn't fine tune their code for each one of the CRTC types...

Amazing job. Well done BebHicks.
A like dtc super-plasma effect at beginning and some astonishing effects in a trackmo style. You've just to adapt it to all crtc (exception tolerated is 2...). The aim of a demo is to be watched on almost all real cpc...

p01> yes... more. you can change the address during the scan line (and also the screen resolution)

"I thought I was watching a good quality prod like the ones on the C64" - don't make me laugh with their brown/magenta slideshows. No comparison at all.
As for music - it's simply BAD. Moreover - it's composed well but highly bad-arranged. My guess is: CPC still has no good tracker.

What abscess said about the C64 slideshows :) About the trackers, I think StarKos is on a very high level in comparsion with Speccy and C64 trackers. So this case is rather a question of composer, the tracker is very good.

Very impressive! Good effects and graphics and a lot of work has gone into the transitions (PC demomakers take note!).

The music was so shrill it nearly blew my eardrums, but I'm guessing this is the fault of the soundchip rather than the composer however.

rulez added on the 2009-08-05 23:23:55 by Iapetus Iapetus
@Ramlaid : no ! The RVI technic for the wobbler effect was easier to do on CRTC 1 ("RVI" extend the video memory), but the multi-scrolls part was much much complicated to do on CRTC 1 due to his internal bugs (we can't set r4 and r9 to 0 simultaneously => RVI cheating is needed)... Sorry to non-CPCcoders for this technical digression :)

So it wasn't easier to do this demo on CRTC 1 in comparison with CRTC 0 or 3. To adapt it I should have to recode fully a lot of thing due of the differents timings and CRTC specificities so we decided to release this one on CRTC 1. The next one will be all CRTC...

A big thumb up to Tom&Jerry for his excellent tune, and to Beb for his lovely graphics !!

For the platform, and a nice oldschooly feeling. I think it lingered a little bit too long on some effects but that is something that can be worked on for the next one.

The music wasn't great, but early ST demo acceptable, having had my eardrums blasted by several years of Mad Max YM tunes :-)

Look what you have done! I have revived my passwort and joined again the pouet craze just to comment for you crazy demoh..

Things that don't show on emulator or youtube video but only on CRTC1 real CPC: 1) The transition from the credits screen to the big scroller, falling big tetris pieces (split rasters in front of colors, CRTC1 feature? Correct me..), 2) the vertical scroll on horizontal parallax scrolls doesn't fuck up.

Many people don't like the music from this one. It wasn't something that remains in my mind but I am ok with it.

Are the smooth 3d again done by line splitting or is it software rendered? I mean, having different versions of centered one color lines, from the smallest to longest and just choosing which to display for the 3d?

BRAVO!!!
rulez added on the 2009-08-06 10:46:43 by Optimus Optimus
Optimus: Its only code animation with a second variable loop for the raster colors...

Its the same kind of code used for Twisters...

... and for the plasma at the begining, and the twisting bars, and the 1 millions tiny scrollers in this demo ;)

Does the address of the screen have to be on a special boundary ? ( e.g. 2, 4, 8, 256 bytes )

Can anyone point me to some HW infos about the CPC : instruction set and cycle, number of clock cycles per VBL, usefull addresses ( resolution, screen, palette, ... ). This demo got me curious about the CPC.
added on the 2009-08-06 12:26:30 by p01 p01
@Optimus : From Scratch is a good pretext to be back on Pouet ! The tetris transition use split border (and no split raster) and it's not a CRTC 1 speacial feature (on CRTC 0 you juste have to use register 8 instead of 6 to do the same thing).

@Exin : don't forget that there is 4 minutes of demo before the 3d, without loading any data... So it's not so easy than "line spliting and rasters". If you know the structure of CPC memory, you know that it's impossible to display this amount of differents lines. So there is a little software engine in addition to line splitting and rasters. And I have a kind of Bresenham algorythm to calculate each line.

@p01 : If this demo makes you curious about the CPC, our aim is reached ! Amstrad CPC is a powerful machine but lacks of great demos. So speak of this one to your c64 freaks ;)

Amstrad CPC capacities :
3,33 Mhz, 128kb RAM, 20000 us per VBL, 16bits memory bus, 8bits data bus, palette of 27 colors. There is 3 differents resolutions :
Mode 0 : 160x200 with 16 colors,
Mode 1 : 320x200 with 4 colors,
Mode 2 : 640x200 with 2 colors.
There is no "bloc-constraints" like on c64. I give the standard resolutions but you can extend it with a very-easy fullscreen (hello ST-coders :).

If you're interested by CPC take a look at :
http://www.grimware.org/doku.php : technical reference, in english,
http://sylvestre.grimware.org/cpc : graphics panorama of what a CPC is capable of, in french but you can just view the pictures,
http://starkos.cpcscene.com : STarKos tracker, used in all the lasts CPC demos.

Hicks: Its 4Mhz...not 3,33, not 3,56...but 4! How can you forget it? :D...althrough many cycles are stolen from certain opcodes....So its not really always 4Mhz...
added on the 2009-08-06 14:20:40 by Exin Exin
Thanks a lot guys! I more or less started on CPC 464 and 6128 when I was ~7yo but was way too young to fiddle in assembler and seek such information. It's only when I moved to STf/e and reach the age of 12 that I started to go assembler style and code for real ( synchronized code and the likes )
added on the 2009-08-06 14:32:04 by p01 p01
FYI I knew the graphic modes of the CPC, the number of colors , the amount of RAM and guessed the number of clocks cycles per VBL ( half that of the ST ;) ), but I know nothing of the HW registers and how often they can be poked.

Hicks: Consider your goal achieved.
added on the 2009-08-06 14:40:51 by p01 p01
@Exin: it's 4MHz, yeah, but the CPU is also continually slowed down by the video chip (even when it is displaying the border), hence the 3.3MHz weird frequency thing (which takes into account all the wait-states added by the video chip). It's just -never- 4MHz on the instruction-cycle side :)
Grimmy: Well, one nop is still just 4 cycles...so.... :D
added on the 2009-08-06 15:05:30 by Exin Exin
unfortunately, we can't do demos only with NOPs. Hmm... Wait! I've just had a new demo-concept! :)
Finally, thumb up even for this screen :)

BB Image

Btw. thx for telling the truth about 3.3MHz and slowing down of gfx chip.
rulez added on the 2009-08-06 16:08:20 by aki aki
Well, its not as easy with 3,3Mhz. Its not about stealing cycles. The CRTC DMA has a static read timing which forces the CPU to work in certain boundaries. The Cpu can only access the databus every 4 cycles. So most Opcodes that are already divideable through 4 are not touched. Others that take a little longer...like one cycle, become 3 cycles larger because the next read of the CPU is in 3 cycles from then.

So, if someone ever speaks of NOP's, referring to the CPC, he means the length of opcodes...

If you wanna know which opcodes are untouched, read some manual about Z80 opcodes and divide cycle lengths through 4....sometimes its not that simple, i know. But shouldnt you be the one who defends the CPC, Grimmy? ;-)
added on the 2009-08-06 16:44:38 by Exin Exin
Actually, I never liked this 3.3MHz stuff as well (as you said, this is not a simple and regular slow down and also because this imaginary frequency comes from an obscure _average_ calculation...). However, it's simpler to use it for explaining that the CPU is not running at full speed rather than going through a bunch of techno-bables with T/M-cycles and wait-states. Remember this is pouet, not a datasheet, use your thumb, not your brain :)
Outch ! Méchante claque ;)

I wanted to give it a heart but I might do when I reach 8192 and get another one.

Personally, it's the first time I see one that makes me say "Finally a CPC demo that is a DEMO in it's true sense". From the time I commented, I watch it once every day on my CRTC1 CPC. It is because for the first time it's not just technical or just gfx/design, it's both combined very well together in a complete megademo and especially the design element I have not see before in such a good way on a big demo. But the effects are at the same time fullscreen overscan at it's fullest too!

I'd like to know how they get the fill rate on some of the 3D

boah geil - nice transitions, hoverver the timing is a bit too slow sometimes (too much repetition of the twister and the fake rotator)
rulez added on the 2009-10-03 16:32:57 by rac rac
Yes, the twister bars effect takes a bit too long.

I think for the fast 3d it's the same concept as other effects (like the twister bars), having different lengths of rasterlines and chosing which to display in a line splitting mode or something. It looks big and smooth like hell for sure though.

Nice effects (displayed a bit too long for my taste), very nice graphics but average tune (just check any Atari or Spectrum 48k music disk).

Waw ! Is that my old cpc 6128 I used to have back in the days ?? I hardly recongnize it !
Excellent work !

I also think that 3d objects are actually rasters... Are there ?
rulez added on the 2009-12-03 23:33:39 by faraday faraday
faraday: i'd say they are precalculated scanlines with various sized segments, that are then selected at display time at the begining of each scanline to make it look like a 3d object :)
added on the 2009-12-03 23:50:07 by Dbug Dbug
DBug & Farady : there is this kind of precalculated scanlines AND rasters coz' it's a 4 colors resolution... and we display 10 or 12 :)

Very good demo, with some impressive technical parts.
Thanks to the guy who showed it at Main Party 2010 ;-)

Very good and nice demo, even if do not like the music.
All new CPC demos must follow this scheme of having several effects dowloaded in one time

Souvenir. Kickass multi-fx demo (on CPC!) which I like more than Still Rising
Note: ok, as a firstie, CRCT1-only is forgiven.
rulez added on the 2015-07-28 13:40:39 by Overflow Overflow
Now that have a CRTC 1 I could enjoy it and the 30y megademo. Maybe my fav CPC demo, the multiscroller is almost like the X-large Spreadpoint demo, freaking good.

Doesn't work on my 6128! Sorry!
Good effects, good tune, and good transitions. Definitely a winner in my book!
rulez added on the 2018-12-16 18:12:03 by cxw cxw
Being CRTC 1 only, it doesnt run on my machine. Reading the comments, my hopes were high. But I realized the demo is just a drag. Many of the presented parts are dragged out way longer than needed; although the little details and effort spend on transitions are rather nice. Piggie it is, unless it would run in the CRTC 0 :P
