Definitely should have won. One of the best demos i've ever seen. Everything just fits so perfectly together and it looks stunning while music fits visuals so well that it makes me cry.
Thank you for finally completing this.

What pommak said, but with only one minor gripe. The explosion scene (shown in the screenshot) didn't have the balls i was hoping it would have had.

Well, it is a living canvas and what I've heard of the tech behind it... it's rather innovating and absolutely beautiful piece of work. Loved the soundtrack as well, not very often can you hear such quality vocals.

rare, as I understand it was released in a remix competition ..
What pommak said.
rulezcdc added on the 2009-09-21 11:37:21 by teel teel
rare and macaw. It was not remix competition. Two of the winning entries just happend to "remixes", but if you actually compare earlier versions to these, you may see that they are practically new demos.

Demoscene has all these crappy unwritten laws that serve no real purpose. If I want to release demo with same soundtrack, then I just do it.

probably the most powerful and touching demo i've seen, the winner in my book

DAMN FUCKING STRAIGHT.
sitting in an irish pub, drinking a cider while david rovics's playing guitar, behind him a screen showing with this demo. that would be something...

but as a demo only ...

I like the intention behind this, and if it actually looked like a classic canvas painting it might've worked, but the visuals are awful, looking more like a contemporary glitch demo (aka a canvas overlay on low res and garish scenes) and there's no cohesion with the music at all.

virne: My point is that this is THE SAME demo, concept-, content- and music-wise as shown at BP. The code for the painters-stuff just didn't seem to work at BP...
So (though honorable intention and all that) this probably shouldn't have competed at all (if the Stream compo rules don't allow that). You could just have released this as a final...

Just my 50 ct.
added on the 2009-09-21 14:46:03 by raer raer
there's really nothing to compare this demo to, the one released at bp was one of the best demos in a long time, but this just goes way over that one...
love you virne!

so, any video yet? doesnt run on my machine for a reason or another...

rulezcdc added on the 2009-09-21 14:58:37 by nosfe nosfe
Most of the demos recycle stuff. At Stream there was at least three "remix" demos. Those days are over when it was considered blasphemy to use for example old code.

If you want to show people what you have done, it must be done at the demoparty. As there are no "hey look what we did"-kind of shows at parties (I think there should be), people have to release stuff at competitions. Which kind of sucks.

But hey. I didn't even got hand shake from organizers. So competition and winning isn't the reason why we make these.

Btw. Video is coming.

'Application failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect.'
Vista 64-bit. Nvidia 9800M.
Anybody have any ideas what the hell that means?
added on the 2009-09-21 16:08:27 by [HamsTeR] [HamsTeR]
When you're using the same graphics engine or anything you're recycling code, what's the big deal about that? Also, almost every demo is using polygon based rendering with pretty much identical lighting models etc. And nobody's been that butthurt for example about every mfx demo looking and feeling pretty much the same for about 5 years straight (No offense, just aggravating a bit to make my point :P )

This thumb goes straight up to pouet lamers' asses. This demo fucking rules.

Link the C runtime statically, please (Multithreaded instead of Multithreaded DLL). Then nobody will have that "side by side configuration incorrect" error message again. I don't want to install MSVCR60, MSVCR70, MSVCR71, MSVCR80, MSVCR81, MSVCR9 and all the other stuff just to be able to see all demos.

Won't run here either, I suspect a broken/missing manifest file of some kind but I'm no expert on manifests. It's probably the same problem you had at Stream.

I get missing dependencies for msvc(r/p)80 and vcomp (they are installed on my box, though) ... the dlls linking to them are the cxcore ones, if that's any help.

Video at YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVPBEYXrfWk

Demo is in fact statically linked. I am honestly sorry for people who are not able to run executable. It seems that symptoms vary. I didn't have time to test this with other than my own machines. I really don't have slightest idea of what's wrong with it. Some depency to some DLL that OpenCV uses perhaps. It's tested on my XP and Vista, but both of them do have Visual Studio installed. It also worked on Annie's machine that did in fact have Visual Studio. I could of course check if OpenCV libs are dynamically linked to crt. (I just used prebuild libs.)

Swift and smooth camera angle changes kind of contradict the visual style and the music here. (You want to make it look like a painting, but move around like you're in a game, so the post-fx-ness of that filter becomes more apparent). So, there's a clash between idea and direction, which makes it look odd and contradictorily, imho.

Pretty moody and nice artistic expression, it just doesn't really reach me. Rendering was nice and fit the mood well. The music I don't like at all, not fan of the style, even though it might fit to the demo. Better than the breakpoint one but...it jsut doesn't appeal to me that way :/

I actually agree with [t]. In part where there are those "children's drawings", camera movement just sucks. (I made it in real hurry with integrated "editor".) With more static camera it would have been a lot better. I had slightly better vision in my mind for that part, but ran out of time. I always do. But I couldn't wait to yet another party. I just wanted this demo out of my head. Actual 3d painting stuff (not that post-process effect) could be used in a lot better way. And there are bugs in it. For example some colors were gone.

Looking at opinions of sentimental demos, I feel like I must be a terrible person with an unfair sense of cheese (I can't think of any good reason for it - but it's the way I am).. and somehow it's triggered by this demo in a way that it usually isn't. Otherwise, I agree with relias somehow.

I do have updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 with the latest DirectX 9.0c (August 2009), ATI Catalyst driver, etc. :(

Oops, I got it to work with v1.03 patch (http://www.chairmanandboard.com/kooma/kooma_boacb_dc_patch_1_03.zip). Now, it worked.

Not a bad demo, but not my style. Love the textures and meaning though!

I actually prefer the first version, but still nice

I didn't like this one, besides the music. Just barely gets a pig from me..

i'm not that impressed by the visuals - but the song is awesome.
so different and fresh. I really hate that I did not like it...

i liked the style and the treatment, but icould and should have been pushed further, mainly the paint effect. It's hard not to feel the classic 3D scene behind. You know, stuf like the camera on a rail with a fixed lookat point.. also that the camera is ALWAYS moving doesn't help much. Would have been great to see the canvas anymated. Those are minor tweaks/suggestion for your next prod maybe ;)

nah. the demo triggers emotions alright, but for what purpose?

sure, cluster bombs suck, but, like, i knew that before i saw this demo.

also, i'm not that much into that antiwar stuff anymore.
added on the 2009-10-04 18:40:22 by vibrator vibrator
I get this error message when running it from winrar: "! Cannot execute "C:\Users\*****\AppData\Local\Temp\Rar$EX01.572\bomb_dc.exe"
"
btw what was the point of having the debug version of DLLs also in the demo package? :/

and when extracting into a folder i get this error:

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect bla bla bla"

Amazingly emotive! It is very pure, very… can't find the word… Ah yes! L'art nouveau de la Demoscène. <3

@nicestep try this patch:

Debug DLL's were left in package in accident. :P

quite cool! I like the "dirty"/distorted kind of look. Sometimes I get tired of all the high tech sharp 3d stuff, and it's nice to see some gritty grungy stuff every once in a while. :)

Excellent! I really love the visual style and the soundtrack.

It was very refreshing to see at the party and it's amazing it didn't win the whole competition. Oh well. :)

As much as I like the theme I must say that I don't like the main filter effect, I don't like the music and I don't like the objects.

the music could be a bit more professional and i like the visual approach but there room for improvement as well.
one could also add its a cheesy story.

but it touches me. its different. i love it.

The music could carry this work on its own. Luckily, it doesn't have to. I have never seen better use of lyrics in a demo.
