After a few C64 demos over the years, this is my first pc demo and I am glad i was able to fit it in 64K :) Feedback will be very appreciated. WARNING: This demo requires Dx10 card and Windows 7 or Vista. For all others see the badly captured video on youtube:

@xernobyl: I think you do not have win7/vista + dx10 card, am I right?

Nice atmosphere. It somehow reminded me another demo of yours. Actually these two demos don't have much in common including the platform but I think music and speed made them closer in my mind.

Greetings part is cool. I like the calm atmosphere of the intro. And you delivered the completed intro man. Congratulations.

Really good 64k. I especially liked the comfomity and patterns of madness parts. Clean, stylish design and the music fits.
Gratz...

Quite good for a One-man show. Also consider it is from a country that demoscene is struggling.

Has some of the calming qualities found in older replay intros. And it is 64k. so thumb!

okayish; not bad per se. But.
1) you should ask a musician to write music.
2) judging from the video, there is absolutely no possible reason why this should be vista/dx10 only.
3) a bit short, and a bit empty.
added on the 2010-01-11 12:31:36 by blala blala
Hey, quite ok for a 1st prod on windows, a bit too short, colors could be also more stylish, music probably too basic... but effects are cool in an old fashion way!

@blabla, 2). Of course that could be done with dx9 but I'm also facing the same issue while developing stuff in dx this year : I just want to be able to move quickly to the dx11 DirectCompute API asap, and building a small framework on top of dx10 will ease the move to dx11, imho, there is at least a reason for using dx10 : prepare for moving to next gen dx11. And well, dx9 is quite old now... at some point, we'll need to move on... no?

Just use OpenGL and there are no more problems ;)
added on the 2010-01-11 13:06:10 by xernobyl xernobyl
Not bad for a first prod, but it sort of reminds me of what Replay-intros would be like if they didn't really care. ;) Keep going, and get a musician and some more contrast in your graphics.

Soothing and nice. Extra Props for DX10!
rulez added on the 2010-01-11 13:52:45 by leGend leGend
blala: there's a lot of smaller benefits of DX10 over DX9, like being able to combine multisampling and HDR in a sensible way.
added on the 2010-01-11 13:57:34 by kusma kusma
Uhm, and by "smaller" I mean "smaller impact for the end-user, but massively important for the saneness of the coder".

made me think "replay meets traction", which is probably a good thing :D

very nice for a firsty (on pc that is).. I think you were the one which coded that very good 3d engine on c64 that is.. thanx for sharing that source (if i'm right)..

that thingy here makes somehow a timetravel in style.. which is.. a good thing..

scenes felt and looked unfinished (horrible aliasing, visible end of world, no details) and the music sounded like it was a test track for softsynth. not too bad for a first (pc) prod though.

I liked the soundtrack. With cleaner visuals it would have been a good replay substitute.

like others said, that's a nice start, but the DX10 req is sad. Also, find youself a musician and boost your softsynth a bit (felt a bit too fm/sine-ish to my taste). And the fact that you chose to do a 64k as your first PC demo deserves a thumb up :D

I really don't understand why using Windows Vista and DX10 sucks. Is everything going to be OK if XP and DX9 are used?

I can understand if you say "use software rendering, hardware rendering sucks" because they really require different disciplines.

I can also understand if you say "use Amiga, PC sucks" since Amiga can sometimes induce a nostalgic joy whereas the PC never had this kind of feel to it.

But I can find no meaning in "use DX9, DX10 sucks". In the end, they are both very similar libraries. The difference between DX9 and DX10 cannot even be compared to the difference between hardware and software rendering. I also don't remember establishing nostalgic links to DX9.0c.

In this case, why does it suck if a scener prefers to use a new library? Especially if he contributed to the development of this library (Nightlord is working on the DX team). Furthermore, how many people will there be left who still use DX9.0c a few years from now? How many people do we see who still use DX7.0 today?

The quality of a demo is determined by not the oldness of the operating system used, but the minimum configuration that is required to run it. Pattern of madness runs very well on average graphics cards (for example, on my 8600 gts). For me, this tells me more about the quality of the demo than whether it runs on XP or Vista.

i actually didn't know that self voting in Pouet was such a big deal. I don't self vote at parties or csdb. adding a comment forces you to vote here and i sincerely thought this is an ok product and thus thumbed it up. is there a way i can change it to piggy?
