The last frame is worth a thumb up, but other than that it's very telling that the only "melody" comes from an actual instrument.

A well deserved winner! Was probably quite close to Apophenia in the style awards ranking.

The idea for this was ofcourse not all brand new, but it's by far one of the most tight executions I've ever seen. Did you by chance use max/msp for triggering the video from midi-events? Great mastering, too! (must have been quite a pain from those sounds) ;)

has been done many times before, with a lot more effort (like positioning video clips by hand) and without any real instruments.
but it like it anyway.

Likely played a role, as he's a fan of max. There's a breakpoint talk of his where he's talking about it.

Anyway, better than part 1. Good use of (automated) editing and that cow noise thing (what's that called?) is just hilarious. :)

Wow, thank you all so much =) I procrastinated doing that one for many years.

I did indeed use max/msp for triggering video snippets via midi. works in realtime with multiple streams on my machine. i went with "one instrument at a time" for capturing 720p/25fps though (which still worked in realtime). Uh, and i used physical midi-loopback from cubase, just as a curious fact (going out and back into the midi interface with a 15cm cable).
The pre-cutting of the snippets I did in Premiere, but (of course) I wrote a script in autohotkey for batch exporting hundreds of segments from a premiere timeline. otherwise this process would have taken days instead of hours.

It actually didn't take much of mixing/mastering work because the samples I used turned out great as they were. Just a little compressing and eq here and there, I intentionally tried to keep it as raw as possible. I used a Zoom H4N for recording (built in microphones). More details coming up in a blogpost in the near future, providing some sample sets as well, especially the one named "tubular hell".

pretty good!

somewhat related, vincenzo has a cool sampling video too

Yeah, vincenzo's video rocks :D Here's another one from Diego Stocco. But afaik he didn't discover the demoscene yet.

Not sure how it's demoscene-related (even if wild) but very enjoyable!

great
rulez added on the 2013-08-20 01:35:38 by grz grz
it's demoscene related because some coding and some realtime aspect was involved in the process of making this. at least, i'd argument that way ;)

jco: you don't need to justify anything - it's demoscene related because it is a wild demo for a demoparty. EOD.

Also: it's excellent :)

JCO should be given the award for the most sparkling ideas while maintaining a funny overall execution.

This is another display of having a great idea and making the most of it.

MsK: I could easily extend the video playing max patcher to play audio as well (ie creating a rudimentary sample player). What already works is just using any standard sampler, like Kontakt. The way I made the video, I had an arrangement of the song in Cubase using several Kontakt instances. From those tracks I sent MIDI via loopback to max. So, playing the song in Cubase triggered the video snippets. after having prepared all this, i soloed each track after another and played it while capturing the video output from my max patch - all in realtime.

Anyway, if you want to tinket with it I can send you the max project, just drop me a mail. (it's not optimized for usability though)
