Hi! [spoilers, haha] Mode infinity doesn't exist of course, but this demo does contain (I think) one effect that I don't think has been done before -- full-colour dithering in 640x256 mode 0 (the second demo part), actually a 2-colour mode. The screen bytes are static and the palette is switched 128 times per frame -- I'll leave figuring out the exact details of how several distinct dither patterns can be displayed using the same screen contents as an exercise to the reader :-). The projector didn't handle the dithering too well during the compo, unfortunately!

The "other" feature of mode infinity -- parallax scrolling -- is a combination of palette switching and the "vertical rupture" technique well-known in the CPC scene, together with a split mode for the scroller at the bottom. The final picture is plain mode 1.

The tune was losslessly compressed from a 96kb .vgm file into about 14kb using a custom compressor tool written specially for the demo.

Just in case you were wondering what all the fuss was about. HTH!

@ggn: Use B-em V2.2 in BBC Master 128 mode (Settings/Model/BBC Master 128). Then go to "Disc/Autoboot disc :0/2" and select the demo file.

Really nice to see more BBC micro demos been made. I didn't realise it could achieve such effects compared to more popular 8-bit machines.
Big thump up!

hahaha, i thought you actually had found some undocumented new screen mode :D Didn't expect that the beeb could do things like this, so it kind of made sense!

Dunno what it would have looked like without projector issues, but it actually looked great on the big screen.

I think it's nice

I don't know anything about the hardware and the picture and the parallax scroller are nice, but as a whole I didn't find this really interesting. The presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

platform and smoothness!!

Nice effects but too many colours. Never expected to see MODE 0 do that! Very smooth. I also like the beep at the start and the music which follows.

Great effect and phenomenal tune! :)

That parallax effect at the start was great, I think you need to know a little about the hardware to appreciate (what looks like) 8 colours in normally 2-colour mode 0! Not sure how it was done, but I guess it took some fancy timing and hacking of the display start addr to get the dithering right.

Sorry I was on a boat in deepest, disconnected Wales and couldn't get a backup tune out for you guys or make it to Sundown, seems you made do with an existing tune? I know what a bastard composing for the beeb's PSG is after The Master of Your Old School, the clock speed isn't supported by any tools and additive pitch shifting in the tracker doesn't help with that - the frequency vals in the VGM need to be multiplied by some scaling factor to account for the clock difference. Ugly :S
