Damn, that was awesome! Still working on my jaw to get back up! Props to Virgill for firing the audio side up in about no time!

this one takes a looot of gpu power but its a very atmospheric 4k. I dont know if a city like this has ever been done in this category and the soundscape is amazing too!

Impressive geometry in 4k!
Pros: an ENTIRE FRICKING CITY, good pacing, gradual introduction and removal of shader features kept things interesting.
Cons: Kinda gritty around the geometry edges, could have ended 10-15s earlier, and the LJ style of dark geometry with lots of fog artifacts around it starts to get old. Try something new, mate, you're a shader ace, you can do it! =)

Fucking Bladerunner in 4k.
LJ and Virgelis did it again.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Updated binaries coming tomorrow/later today featuring increased performance and reduced artifacts, will still make your shiny new GPU sweat though ;)

60 fps capture aswell as some other goodies are in the works too, so hold back and stay tuned guys!
added on the 2016-12-29 03:21:39 by LJ LJ
60 fps cap was done 15 minutes after release. So why not release ? Because a certain someone, will most likely try to take it down with at fake copyright claim.

eagerly awaiting the updated binaries :)

Shame it ends just as I was about to get into it. Not 100% about the motion trail and some of the music was slightly off tune, but it's trying to be different which is badly needed in 4ks nowadays.

nice
rulez added on the 2016-12-29 16:04:02 by EviL EviL
what gargaj said about trying new things (camera was good), but the visual artefacts and stutter was just way too heavy for what it does, sorry.
added on the 2016-12-29 16:04:18 by cupe cupe
First time ever virgill is off tune! ;) I had to listen again with a headphone, but it is...i guess you did it on purpose?!
The Geometry isn´t that impressive...i did about the same scene once and had it running 60fps+ allover....artefact-free! ;)
I leave a pig for now...waiting for final! (low fps and artefacts would let me thumb it down normally!)
Aah, one question: do you have the shaders precompiled in those binarys? Or is it just because there ain´t much shader-code at all to be compiled at runtime? I am just wondering about the intro starting immediately without any precalc-time! (maybe i should lower my crinkler-settings?!...my 4k in the making needs 30secs+ precalc already...for 3 different scenes!)
Beware of hardy's thumbdown

Love the theme and soundtrack. Gloomy as hell :)
rulez added on the 2016-12-29 16:26:41 by Zplex Zplex
Well done!

...but you really need to address those raymarching artifacts and poor performance.
rulez added on the 2016-12-29 16:53:02 by xTr1m xTr1m
I bet my house, job and dogs that the before mentioned slightly detuned music was intended..
added on the 2016-12-29 16:53:23 by Dascon Dascon
New banaries are up at the download link!
As promised: improved performance, waaay reduced artifacts. Still Geforce GTX 1080 recommended for 1080p version ;)

Also Virgill made his atmospheric soundtrack available on his soundcloud, check it out!

@ɧคɾɗվ. I'm resisting my temptation to call you out on your first comment, we'll resolve this issue at Revision 2017 - shader showdown ;P As to your question, no precompiled shaders and to my knowledge a pretty large shader, no preprocessor statements though and GLSL. Crinkler settings are medium around 1000 orderretries, 500 hashretries and compmode slow.

Nice and moody. The cars/whatever don't really work for me - maybe the artifacts could have been hidden better. I don't know! Certainly good enough for a thumb anyway, and the music's ace as always though that bass drum feels a bit boring.

This is simply brilliant work. Again, as with the other coops between you two, I really feel you bring something new and refreshing every time. I'm not really following people asking for more. This is 4k, and there's only so much you can do. And I'd rather have awesome streams of lava graduately getting cold than a 100 % artefact free city rendering. I know there's of course varying takes on this, and that some prefer a flawless single-effect thing, while others are more into multiple minor flaws but more content. And I'm definitely into the last category :)
The visuals and music fits so well together, creating this eerie feeling all through the intro. I'm pretty amazed at the horn instrument. I think perhaps the pitch-vibrato is what causes the out-of-tune impression other people mention. I love it, though! Gives a more organic touch to the instrument. Did I spot a bit of reuse of the booming bass/kick-thingie from Rhodium? ;)
Overall, this is fantastic work, and I'm sure looking forward to see what you guys bring in the future. Hopefully, we'll be able to compete neck-to-neck at future parties' 4k compos!

Looks nice and music is good (and very fitting) too. However, for some reason it doesn't really keep me interested. Pig for now, might change when I have watched it a few more times.

Ok, seems you took my first comment very serious. Don´t do that! ;)
I really really liked all of your prods so far. I even asked Virgill to ask you if you´d like to join TRSI just some days ago! ;) (You are still very welcome if you want to join!)
I also see you made further progress.
But the prod itself is not to my liking this time, that easy! I watched the final now from the 720p-executeable!
I mean, comeon, those cars are halfcut spheres/cubes and the spheres have red backlights but no frontlights, while the cubes have white frontlights but no backlights...the Lava-thingamabobs don´t look that nice at all...the windows are just whitecolored pixels...the whole thing has only one real scene plus the very nice intro-scene which should be quite small in final bytesize.
Just take it, i don´t thumb prods down that often (~20%) but i have to, as i really dislike it!
Sorry!
Maybe take this as a remedy: After having witnessed The Timeless live at Revision i went back home and coded a similar scene (the one i talked about in my first comment already!) ...and guess what: once i had implemented the cars lights i started to dislike the whole thing and never touched it again...it just looked as bad as your approach here! ;)
sucks added on the 2016-12-31 13:02:00 by ɧ4ɾɗվ. ɧ4ɾɗվ.
The final is a huge improvement, good job in getting rid of most of the raymarching artifacts :)

@ɧคɾɗվ.
Dude I even greeted you in the NFO, y do u do dis 2 me :'( ?!1
Just kidding, while your critique is mostly valid I feel like you're focusing too much on the weaker aspects of this intro, disregarding its strong points like the awesome music, dense atmosphere, quite decent camera work / direction and the interplay of them. I feel like its a bit unfair to thumbdown the whole prod because of the things you mentioned but if they made you "really dislike it" then be it so. No strong feelings here, but you better not pull a "i had to drop my concept last minute and throw away everything i had prepared" for your revision release next year :P

@Punqtured
I always enjoy reading your detailed feedbacks, thank you!

music was incredible for 4k, half spheres moving sideways looked weird, the lava twister also looked kind of strange, having a storyline of somesort was nice though.

The rate at which these guys are pumping out new content is mesmerizing, and so are the visuals and music in this intro! Although the soundtrack is not nearly long enough to be fully immersive, it is still beautiful :)

The ending scene is also very cool when the lava columns suddenly grow cold and dark and put all city activity to sleep.

Neglected commenting on this. The concept is ambitious and this pulls it off, albeit just barely. The rendering quality along with some questionable artistic decisions (focal lengths, colors...) are the weakest links, no question, but of course you can only do so much with the allotted bytes. But like I said everything in the visual side is still sufficient. The music steals the show though, it's so goddamn clean, inventive and elaborate...
