hm... java
sucks added on the 2003-08-10 19:03:17 by maali maali
If this doesn't work, try saving this html into the same dir as the .jar file: http://scali.scali.eu.org/demo.html
Then open it in a browser or with appletviewer.
Edit the BrowserDemo value to "false" to allow high-quality .ogg playback on Java 1.3+
added on the 2003-08-10 22:34:24 by Scali Scali
Java 1.4.2 installed: won't go further than the loading screen in IE, gives me the finger in a proper browser.

Ideas?
added on the 2003-08-11 03:20:32 by Shifter Shifter
Here's an idea: read the .nfo :)
It's not meant to run in a browser anyway.
Best way to run it is fullscreen as an application.
But with certain JVMs it goes out of memory. The .nfo tells you how to avoid that and explains the different ways in which you can run it. The HTML is a final fallback (mostly for people with only the MS JVM installed).

It ain't bad :)

it is... the demo was made in a few days time piles and piles of junk... and the junk itself was also quick and ugly, so :P
added on the 2003-08-11 14:59:15 by maali maali
Are you calling my code 'piles of junk'? ;)
added on the 2003-08-11 20:08:04 by Scali Scali
yes... you're fired!

Let's see... Not particularly fast or great to look at, ugly radial blur (with a big-ass visible cross), less than 640 blobs, cameras which fly straight through objects, and... oh yeah, the main thing which really bothered me: The scrolling of the overlay pictures wasn't even bilinearly filtered so instead of a smooth scroll the pictures move a pixel every 2 seconds or so. I was gonna say the overlays weren't subpixel-correct, but that seems like a touchy subject for this bunch of people. :)

Anyway, better luck next time.
sucks added on the 2003-08-11 21:07:07 by sagacity sagacity
Well, it may not be particularly fast, but it uses bilinear filtered texturing throughout, with 2 or even 3 textures at the same time.
It's a shame that you can't really see that.
Radial blur is bugged, I know. I couldn't fix it in time, but I used it anyway, because else there were even less effects.
The camera is a bit sad... It wasn't supposed to go through the object, but I edited the timing somewhere, and created this bug.
As for the overlays. They are actually bilinear filtered. But I decided to use an RLE spriteroutine rather than the regular bilinear filtered pointsprite routine, to make it faster.
And making that subpixel-correct is rather hard. I was hoping for faster layer movement, then it would not have been a problem.

So yes, I know there are a lot of small bugs and problems. If people are interested, we can do a final version, but I guess that would just be wasted effort.

So yes, watch out for the next release, where I will burn extra CPU speed on subpixel-correct overlays just for sagacity.

Thanks, man!
added on the 2003-08-11 22:24:29 by sagacity sagacity
lots of effects and objects, brilliant shading, the oldschool touch (applied using the radial blur bug 5 out of 10 encountered when they first wrote one), coherent design and an overall rock-solid entertainment-factor.

rather stunning, i'd say!

oh i forgot to mention the frame-rate, which is to die for! another thumb up!
added on the 2003-08-11 22:37:11 by superplek superplek
That's right plek, it easily beats your software-rendered party-hacks ;)
added on the 2003-08-11 22:39:18 by Scali Scali
any time scali, i'm on your side!
added on the 2003-08-11 22:40:05 by superplek superplek
And that's where you're wrong plek. I would never allow some arrogant uselessly flaming bastard who's never made a top-quality demo himself to be on my side.
If you don't have constructive criticism, don't say anything at all (and I mean that in general, not related to this demo ofcourse).
added on the 2003-08-11 22:50:12 by Scali Scali
you sound like someone who sports the same features ;) but ofcourse, i really can't top the "the subpixel correctness is missing" cricitism. i'm just not *that* bright!
added on the 2003-08-11 22:52:40 by superplek superplek
You're not bright enough to see the difference between a flame and constructive criticism. "Subpixel correction is missing" immediately says what's missing, and therefore offers a solution. See how this is constructive? Ah, why even bother.
added on the 2003-08-11 22:54:05 by Scali Scali
i was merely pointing out that fact, oh lord Scali!
added on the 2003-08-11 22:55:58 by superplek superplek
I don't know why you get so worked up over a simple subpixel comment somewhere...
Sounds like you're jealous that you don't know what us real coders are talking about, or something.
Why else would this be such a touchy subject for you? It wasn't even on one of your demos (because, obviously, you only use hardware, so you don't even have to worry about it).
added on the 2003-08-11 22:59:08 by Scali Scali
don't twist sagacity's quote around, i'm not sure if he will appreciate that. besides, you should really team up with other Real Men and erect some kind of 'Real Coders Guild' within the scene. you all could be coming together in order to tell off others while enjoying a beer! now does that sound good?

(in the meanwhile, the obviously irrelevant others will actually be doing something, like creating demos and working on well-selling digital entertainment titles).
added on the 2003-08-11 23:05:45 by superplek superplek
Oh yes, plek the almighty game coder and scener.
Excuse me while I only write software renderers for mobile devices.

And decided to use some of the code, beef it up, and do a little demo, because plek insists that one must write demos in order to post reactions at pouet.

You are obviously missing the entire point here. I will summarize it for you: shut up and grow up.
added on the 2003-08-11 23:11:04 by Scali Scali
i did not utter the word allmighty, but you'd have to give me at least one credit: i'm awfully talented at wasting production-threads ;)
added on the 2003-08-11 23:13:13 by superplek superplek
For mindless trolling and personal vendetta-stuff in production-threads I wouldn't use the word 'talent'. I think 'bad and annoying character trait' would be more fitting.

I don't go flaming in all your production threads either because I think you're an arrogant lamer, do I?
Go write a demo or something. One that's actually good for a change. This demo may not be good, I know that. But the stuff you put out so far isn't exactly at a higher level. Just incohereht party-hacks.
Or did I accidentally miss all those compo-winning entries that you made, and only saw the bad stuff?
added on the 2003-08-11 23:25:06 by Scali Scali
I think it's best to let the others decide about the differences between you and me. The two of us could never establish a well-weighted opinion of that matter, since we're far from objective, no? Don't go beef yourself up now that you've made an utmost shitty and boring Java demo, will you? :)

oh and by the way, i'll have to leave now, getting thirsty. it has been a great pleasure to conversate with you once again, thanks.
added on the 2003-08-11 23:31:51 by superplek superplek
it's "to converse" by the way, cough ;)
added on the 2003-08-11 23:34:14 by superplek superplek
And where exactly did I 'beef myself up'? I never said anything about myself.

You are the one 'beefing yourself up' because you wrote some partyhack demos and worked on some games. That doesn't exactly make you special in the scene you know, and it certainly doesn't give you the right to just flame and annoy other people.
There's plenty of people that have written way better demos and games than you. So who the hell do you think you are anyway?
You're no better than the rest. In fact, your attitude is considerably worse than most others.
added on the 2003-08-11 23:34:41 by Scali Scali
Honestly, now. God is love!
added on the 2003-08-11 23:36:58 by sagacity sagacity
the sad thing is that people always want to see counterperformance to accept someone's criticism. how the hell can you be serious about this and about that what happens within this scene anyway? come on, most of what happens here is crappy, really. exceptions made, and in those cases respected is mostly donated within correct proportions (yes, even by me!). and besides that, start being a little less grumpy will ya? i don't know anything about you, just as you don't know anything about me. does that preclude either of us from being an ass from time to time? i guess not. stop nagging about attitude, if we would all be grumpy serious wankers this whole hobby would lose even more of it's charm.
added on the 2003-08-11 23:45:44 by superplek superplek
damn, what's going on with my fingers tonight. respected=respect, within=in ;)

and to beat your ass even worse..I GOT MORE GLOPS!!! MUAHAHAHA
added on the 2003-08-11 23:47:27 by superplek superplek
That looks almost like an excuse. You're losing your touch, plek.
added on the 2003-08-12 00:01:56 by Scali Scali
i still called you a 'grumpy wanker' though.

Dang you're right... sorry I missed the opportunity to return the favour. Ah well, maybe some other time.

Allow me to up the ante, for I have not read this thread for at least 6 hours.

I read the .nfo as well as your additional post here Scali, that is the only reason why I got further than the "cannot find a MSVC DLL" error message.

Wasn't the true purpose of Java writing platform independent programs? Oh well, may have been asleep during your "World Domination + Subpixel Whatever" takeover.

Your attitude is teh sucks, Scali :)
sucks added on the 2003-08-12 00:34:35 by Shifter Shifter
It would help if you told me that you had an MSVC DLL problem.
And if you REALLY read the .nfo, you could read that the DLL is not required. In fact it's not even used unless you specifically specify the 'fullscreen' commandline option.
So yes, this Java program is still 100% platform-indepentent. In fact, Chip reported that it ran on his linux box just fine.
So I'm sorry, but your flame has failed. Try again.

I haven't seen the demo, but this thread is very entertaining. Plek and Scali both doing their best Optimus impression!

Rant on, brothers!
ppl that say the scene is dying should read this... damn, we just found two of the most active sceners ever! :)

Loadingtime took around 15 minutes, the framerate wasn't really impressive either, the certain forementioned effects are really not as "splendid" as they sound.
Good thing is that Maali's gfx saves most of the show, and the music is nice as well.

=> Java VM was not permitted in the browser demo compo rules.

Browserdemo without Java?
Yes, apparently the compo was flash/dthml only, not Java, the rules didn't specifically mention Java, so we didn't know if it was allowed or not.
It was also entered into the combined compo at ASM. But it wasn't good enough to make preselection there.

I wouldn't say just OK, this rulez, because it is not about about great demos on JAVA (which isn't the platforms for demos), so scali did a good job without giving up to the "Allmighty 3D hardware", instead a oldschool relying on the CPU power, maybe it is not the best demo ever, but definitely worth a view, so scali keep up the good job, and i dunno the reactions because my comment, so i just ask to you people, don't be so harsh to me, it's just an opinion from a newbie, who possibly in a far future, will be writing a kickass demos, but only time will tell. Sir Darkangel at your service

Demo is very boring but this thread is entertaining :D Effects are nothing special at all and there are quite some bugs as already mentioned. The music is kinda nice though.
