Blue Wire from ASD finished 2nd at the React demoparty. I think congratulations to Nina are due, since this is her first ever demo related production. a nice oldskool demo from a very new coder of the demoscene. Welcome nina

who on earth gives this a tumbs up for this demo. Even I could code this stuff.. I've coded a demo that is much better and I get thumbs down for it... Damn... sorry this production wasn't quite impressive...
but it's nice to see new "female" coders in this world..
thumbs down sorry...

This is the first production of the currently "under training" member of ASD. It looks Nina is a promising coder. Keep Up!

oldschool == crap? I don't think so..
but no thumbs down for young female coders. 8))

Way to go nina.. They say that the start is half of everything. And indeed the hard part is to produce your first demo.

We expect more from you in the future =). I'm sorry I couldn't write music for this.. but well.. I'll be done with the army sometime =)

no really interesting fx. i liked the music loop and that picture.

why Nina, you've made a demo.

what is a female?

Ofcourse it`s nice to see females doing demos, but I think we should treat females on the same level as the males.

So therefore this production get a big thumb down. It sucks, and its slow.

Good work nina. Wellcome to the scene! ;)

it's damn slow on my Athlon 1200, also too short and lacks effects. The music is good but repetitive, and I don't think it sounds oldschool at all (plus, it's an mp3, which makes a 2,5Mb download a waste). It's nice to see newcomers, but you should learn a bit more before releasing any production, or at least, make a good production out of what you know.

No thumbs down because of "newbieness" from Nina's part, but definitely the demo is not worth the download. Keep working, I expect to see more and better from you soon :)

'Oldskool' demos ran at smooth framerates on 7 MHz machines, not horrible framerates on 1.3 GHz machines.

This prod isnt that bad, those cubes could have had another color though.
I understand if people think this suck, compared to the 'scene-standards' but this is her first thing. good job.
I'm a new comer so i have to say congratulations nina.Maybe we could make a demo together(Mogwai Productions).
Anyway it was a very nice effort demo...go on Nina

First prod by Nina,really nice.
Keep on coding....I'm waiting a full-blown demo from you in React 2003 now that you have the experience of the first demo:)

Thumbs up all the way...

Finally, it's time a good chance to update my female geeks page :)

I am glad you released your first work Nina, no matter if it's not good. Don't worry about that. Afterall most of the other guys didn't released something good either, some were working at their unfinished things in the party and I have released even badder things than Atsou and worst than everyone there both in the party results and in reality! :)

About your intro. Sympathetic, few simple effects, however from the part with the cubes (Hehe, you did your first poly's while I am still doing dots :) everything slows down very much like hell! The final scroller worked fine in ReAct compo machine, but not in a Pentium at 1200Mhz here in the Icafe. I don't know, I will try it in other machine configuration too (Perhaps it was a bug of the computer and not your code?), if so I am wondering why? I hope you will find ways to optimize your effects better next time. It's good anyways that you made your first noble step in demomaking, hope to see more of you soon.

P.S. I am keen of Wain's comment lately. By giving more possitive comments to women, it's like we pass the meaning of unequallity beetween the sexes. It's like we admit that women are not that capable mentally to make a good demo. An interesting idea I latelly have heard through people is that beeing more possitive to women comes back as a boomerang against them (Ok,. somehow I may do the same mistake with my female geeks page) There are other reasons why and if we should be more favored with demos made by girls, but I should stop analysing this for now...

However sometimes it's hard for me to thumb down (And other times I have done this for prods that I shouldn't perhaps..) and not only for female sceners, but also for my close scene friends. I know Nina and I know also other scene friends who released something at the party and was not good, but I am incapable of thumbing down their prods because I know it's their first try and I have met them personally, it's hard to thumb down them. At least I wont thumb up then.. But it's a good thing if someone has the guts to analyse the quality of a demo and vote bravely what he thinks of no matter who was behind it (A girl? A good friend? A respected scener? God? Whatever? If it suxx, it suxx,. afterall we criticise the prods themselfs and not the persons behind..)

Well, it is remarkable to see a determined female coder. Doesn't happen every day, if you ask me. The graphics and the music fit this prod very well. Nina's code is slow, especially the cubes part. Now, I know some optimization can make it alot faster, which is a nice thing to look for whenever she has some spare time.

Nina is in charge of ASD's PR stuff, mind you, and she does an excellent job at it. Also, she filmed almost the entire React event with her video camcorder, so I guess she now has lots of enemies :-P

Another note of importance is that this prod had no problem whatsoever running on the troubled compo machine, like almost half the other competing demos had.

I take back my comments about the scroller. It runs fine here in a Celeron 350Mhz. Probably it was a bug in the computer I first tested it...

well, i think i have to agree with rp.
i don't like this one, the music is good, but not for this prod, the first part is cool, the picture is great, but somehow it does not qualify as a whole.
As for a first prod, this is good. (My first one was even more inferior...)
No thumbs down, and I wish Nina to keep the scene spirit, and create more prods.

when Nina was at the party, she wasn't sure if she wanted to release the demo or not. Do you know why? Because she was afraid of bad comments. She was asking again and again if is or isn't a good idea to release it. There was another effect in her demo, but she removed it because it was a bit old and others who saw it reacted in a way that Nina didn't liked... (or at least this is what i understood from what she said to us [me and apomakros] at the party).

So, please, don't be bad with newbies. Nobody started by making the best production, and many others started with whorst productions than Nina's.

Now about the demo... it doesn't suck. But it doesn't rule either. I'll leave it to "is ok", but that doesn't mean that you mustn't download it. Actually, i think that you should download it and rank it by yourself. If pouet.net supported a rank from 0 to 10, by 0=sucks, 5=is ok and 10=rulez, i would ranked it 7, keeping in my mind that this demo was made by a newbie and was the first production.

hay dudez.. don't blame Nina for releasing this little demo even if you don't like it. if everyone whould treat new sceners the way some of you do the scene whould dye in a couple of years.
I must say that i like the design and the music of the demo. maybe some routines are quite slow but that's ok for someones first release..
i will give a thumb up just because Nina has the guts to upload this demo here knowing that some idiots will make stupid coments..if you can do it better do it..
if not.. don't blame others..

cheers Nina.

Code is extremely slow, fx very simple... i suspect this demo has a putpixel() :||| ASD guys help more nex time.

Music is nice. No thumbs down for newbies

I was thinking, it would be not that bad idea to change sex afteralls ;)
added on the 2002-04-24 09:39:00 by Optimus Optimus
I don't think it's slow because of a putpixel(). I have tried oneday to make such subroutine in qbasic experimentally just to see the loss, and call it at each pixel of my effect and it was not that slow. It lost important speed just for that (E.g. from 50fps to 20 as I remember) Perhaps it's something else, extensive use of floating point and heavy math, where it could have been avoided. I haven't coded flat poly's yet though, so I don't know about this part. The lisseazuj (How is this thing written anyways?) lights seem preety slow on a Celeron 400Mhz here btw too..

badsector: i didn't gave a comment about the demo, neither i said anything about nina personally. i'm just sure this production would have got mucho grande more downs if it's been made by anybody but a woman. i don't blame anybody for making a bad demo, the scene needs newcomers as well as bad productions to worship good ones. to point it out: IT'S NOT THAT BAD FOR A FIRST PRODUCTION. but hell, there are better demos with less thumbs up. so what are you doing? special girle bonus? bah...

I think rp is right about the girlie bonus. But I don't think that Nina shouldn't release this demo. It's good for her that she finally had seen her first noble coding work on the big screen and got some comments about that, no matter if they were good or bad..
added on the 2002-04-24 16:11:46 by Optimus Optimus
rp: it is somewhat irritating that you complain in a recent BBS-thread about people being so rude and respectless to the long-term scener AEG and in general:

"a less destructive way of giving comments is really appreciated in the future. this ain't no damn kindergarten."

...and then you are writing an obviously destructive and personally insulting comment that is really on "bauarbeiter"-level for a newbie-production (i'm talking about your first and third comment here). it's not that this production (which is IMO, well, erm, uh, a first try) will throw fr-0whatever from the top positions because of 4 or 5 friends giving a thumb up (possibly with newbie- or even(!!!) girl-bonus (there is a farbrausch-bonus in every competition, who cares?))...

Even if it's slow code, I kinda liked the gfx work, so this is averagely better than any rC production :D.
The only thing I diss is the mp3 music, this could have been a small sized prod with an mo3 or a proper tracked tune.

I release my first demo, and it's like.. this sucks.. don't ever release first prod.. no one came to my defense.. so I'll have to say this is clearly controversy because of gender, not because of the actual production.. that's all.

Keep up the effort still.

Thumb up for gasman.

Why can't we treat people simply like human beings? Now that Nina is obviously long since scared off by a mix of condescending crypto-misogynist and plain ordinary misogynist reactions to her first and only release, can we say we've learned anything?

Quite mediocre, except a nice track and it isn't completely illiterate design-wise either. A fine attempt, and there isn't anything wrong with testing out the waters in an actual compo. We've all been there.

Also what gasman said.
