Welcome to the first issue of Genycs Magazine, the official magazine of the "Generation Y Computer Scientists" group at Facebook.

As the name says, this group is supposed to connect people into computer science (programmers, managers, designers, researchers, etc.) who were born between the years 1980 and 2000. I have been asked the question why I created a group for a specific age category. Well, there is a reason for this. People of our generation have particular interests which we do not share with people of other generations. In any case, we are not exclusively open for Generation Y people. There are also some members in the group who were born earlier than 1980. Our motto is to be tolerant and open-minded; these people certainly have their reasons why they want to be connected with us.

This magazine is released as a diskmag edition and as an online edition. As some of you might know I am also the editor of the Hugi Magazine, which can be found at http://www.hugi.scene.org/. I have more than 20 years of experience in diskmag editing so it will be no problem for me to create something decent. However, I cordially invite all of you to participate in the making of this magazine, either by writing articles or by submitting graphics - just take a look at the contents of this issue and feel free to write about anything you consider to be interesting for our target group!

I am aiming for three releases per year. Since this first issue was released in February 2018, the next one will probably come out in June and the third in October. But this may change. Let's see what the future will hold to us. In any case, my intention is not to remain the sole author of this magazine, and therefore, I again invite every one of you to start writing and submitting stuff for this magazine.

Of course your feedback is always appreciated, as well.

Ow... tried the online edition (was semi-interested to read a bit about demobit). That's one user-hostile website! The actual content is crammed into ~40% of the page, while the rest is basically empty, and the content doesn't even fit into that little box, it scrolls horizontally. And the images are semi-transparent, with a textured background showing through, wtf :)

Doesn't computer science include things like how to present information, usability etc. any more?

> Issue 1 (February 5th, 2018)

Looking at its design I think you mean 1998.

Ever tried checking it with a higher resolution? That's how it looks on my screen:

Also, it's boring, but I'm outside of the target age so that might be the reason.

How about opening the link to the online edition in a new window or a new tab?

Or how about just getting someone who has some understanding of how to design and code websites?

Designer and a programmer would definitely help. But this magazine also needs some interesting content - I dare to say it's even more important than its visual side.

i lol'ed at the idea of compressing the state of the universe using RLE. so a popcorn-piggie it is.

But I don't have anything interesting to tell the world so I'm not going to be telling the world about it. This is my mission statement.

What does this have to do with demoscene anyway?

I guess I have to second keops. And even if I would be interested in the matter I gotta say that with "20 years of experience in diskmag editing" I assumed something different than this in terms of presentation. So I am with Maali and Preacher on this one.

You know, it's always easy to criticize something but it's difficult to make it better oneself.

20 years of doing the very same thing over and over again doesn't count as 20 years of experience, by the way.

That is true, but when you make a diskmag, it is not only that you write and edit articles all the day, but you also interact with other people and get feedback from them. So that does make you somewhat experienced.

Ah well. To my knowledge most of the people who have reacted here so far do not even belong to the target group of this magazine (Generation Y Computer Scientists). Maybe it was futile to add this to pouet but on the other hand - why not.

By the way, I'm not so stupid that I've not realized why you thumb down my diskmags: you do so because you know that I do am not in need of a motivational thumb up, since I am making the diskmag anyway and most likely won't ever stop doing so.

Adok: In my case I thumbed down because it's bad, there are basic usability flaws, the design is awful. If it was a first try, it'd be "Here are the flaws, but thumb up for putting something out".

But after twenty years of making something that is basically just an interface, you haven't learned how to make a good interface? Seriously ask yourself why. Interface design is a basic part of computer science, it's a well studied field, there's a ton of good resources to learn it, many courses (it was a part of my compsci degree).

This is the equivalent of publishing a paper full of spelling, grammar and maths mistakes and a structure that makes it even more difficult to follow. Then, when it fails peer review, bitching about peers and deciding to just publish another paper full of the same basic errors.

+ hooray, a new diskmag!
- quality is rather weak: no tailored gfx, no music, few texts and not that much fresh content

Overall: Thumb for providing a proper party report in diskmag form :)

And beside, trying to compress the universe is futile, I´m pretty sure it is basically a structure generated by sth. comparable to a 256b intro: Weltraum am Draht quasi.

Hey Adok, I really tried to give it a chance I really did. I even read those PDF file based further issues up until merger with yet another "Genius Society Magazine that looks like crap".

Content (articles) are sometimes readable but associating a lot of that content with a genius concept and releasing something like this.. to this audience is arrogance beyond measure.. Or a total lack of IQ.

I'm not sure what you expected. You started Hugi as a kid, got some support, Chris Dragan coded engine for you and that redefined magazines for a while.
Thank you.. really appreciated but as you found out, formula is completely outdated.

I believe many of us, especially aging gently have huge sentiment to disk magazines and would like to turn back time occasionally to read something interesting in the way it used to be.. That could also be a PDF that looks and feels as publications from past decades.. your choice but let it be crafted for the target audience you're trying to hit.

So you're not a kid anymore, no handicaps there. You got you degree in computer sciences then show that you can code something.

If among all these intelligent gifts you got you have no design skills, hire somebody.

Being able to drive conversation in a clever way you could get it for free here.

But no... you prefer to impost shity form factor, with no USPs and no idea how to define target group larger than you and your dear friend you see in a mirror...

Oh.. gosh. I'm sorry. But this crap just killed all the sentiment for you for making Hugi possible for so many years.
