Feature suggestion: categories/keywords

category: general [glöplog]

I was thinking... if you could add certain categories or keywords to productions, it would be much easier to search for certain demos where you forgot the name or group... Or if you want to look for similar demos, or perhaps you're interested in demos featuring a certain style or effect...

So I thought it would be nice if you could add keywords or categories to productions... like eg. "Raytracing", "Flyby", "Minimalistic", "Copper effects", "Metaballs", stuff like that...

As of now, there are 8252 productions on pouet, so I wonder who wants adds keywords for all of these :)

Kami-: I think it's like .nfo's and screenshots... sooner or later someone will add them.
And since it's easy to add keywords, I think (well, hope) people will take the trouble after having watched a production.

Scali: When i think about it, you are right... and when you can get glöps for it there will be some people who add a lot of infos =)

Great ideas! I would like being able to search specific categories like graffiti and xmas, and also to find which prods a person has been involved with.

Hah! Going completely off-topic...

The most popular English misquotation is, "A rose is a rose is a rose." It actually reads, "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." (Gertrude Stein from Sacred Emily)

We now return you to regular (and slightly less trivial) programming...
I second what mempheria said

i foresee some problem.... how far must you go with these nametags?! And besides, there aren't really real standards we can categorize demos in... i mean, the terminology can differ, so that this new order wont really work.

Well, you should only pick from a standard list of keywords (else x-ref won't work).
And I think some people misunderstand...
I don't want it to replace demo/intro etc categories... I want it as extra info, so searching for prods becomes easier and more powerful.
I also think that a search function for involved users is a good idea.

Scali :
make a difference between enjoying a demo, and analysing a demo.

- if you enjoy it, simply take a look to the thumbs, popularity and existing pouet search engine.
- if you want to analyse it, like to see all demos with metaballs to take a look to the best, then download all the best demos, and make yourself your cd rom with the demos sorted by your taste.
Some demos have too much effects, and some effects have no name for now, what is the interest to know there is 2000 demos with a rotozoom? art is art, enjoy it as is, and for analyse use your memory
Simply use your brain and remember yourself the best ones, then they will becomes references for you.
This thing have a name : own culture.
Zone: I think you missed the entire point.
I hate it when people do that, then open their mouth.

scali, maybe I didn't get the point to.
I agree, having some keywords as "raytracing" or "software rendered", or even "softsynth" might be useful when you look for a particular kind of demos, but knowing things about copper bars and/or metaballs is pointless...
In the first case you have subcategories about "how the group wrote the demo" and in the second one "what known effects they used"... the second, imho, is something absolutely useless, since I'm never going to look for "a demo with metaballs", but rather "a (good) software-rendered demo running under windows" (and, actually, it happened exactly two weeks ago when I was looking for demos to be shown on a conference ;)

Scali : i open my mouth if i want, it's not a youngboy wich tell me what i must do....
imho your idea of improvement is unuseful, do what you want.
Pouet.net get fucked up by those fucked youngboys anyway... poor beings that think uploading stupid pictures, virus, fake demos etc... is fun...
