No.
According to Yes/Scoopex the HDD of the server has a serious problem. Head crash or airplane crash or something like that.
rumors have it that the hdd is dysfunct. or maybe it's just the hd, maybe irokos or madenmann know more ..

It's not all dead. Nectarine playlist and stream server are still alive : http://nectarine128.de.alldas.org:8002/.

so no loss of uploaded tunes etc? were there backups?
added on the 2006-09-15 15:44:09 by Axel Axel
Uploaded tunes are on scene.org so no trouble with this.
There are frequent database dumps afaik.

Axel: don't worry Axel, in case it would happen I would instantly re-upload your favorite YMs ;)

Actually, the root of the problem seems to be the death of the motherboard, as the machine refuses to boot on a new disk.
As it's a kinda old bi-processor + scsi + raid it may be difficult to find a similar model nowadays. Wait and see for further news...

Regarding Nectarine, we sincerely apologize for all our donators and want to assure them that Yes does his best to circumvent the problem.

YES (and others) donate(d) his/their time for years to keep Ojuice and Nectarine not only up and running, but constantly improving.

Their efforts are appreciated and applauded by the community as a whole, no need for any apologies!
:)

hd: Ojuice up and running, and constantly improving? Wow, nice parallel universum you've got there ;)

Seriously, ojuice has been down several times per month (often for several days) for years now. A sane person would have at least moved out nectarine out of that crappy "hosting" ages ago.

With all due respect to what Yes once did for the scene: Letting scene community platforms like ojuice and nectarine die this way just sucks.

Scamp: There are many things to do to improve Nectarine's status. But Yes and Chandra have no counts to give you and the demoscene back, but donators. They do their best in their spare time with the contraints they face.

It's almost 2 years that the idea of moving Nectarine away is in the air. But there are reasons why it hasn't been done yet. Most of them are deep personnal problems.

I believe that it's ranting without knowing which suck actually.

Doh: "The scene doesn't count, money does?". Oh well.

And I sure *know* that ojuice has been unstable due to it being hosted on a Windows crappy box in some crappy office for years now, and I sure *know* that it hasn't "improved" in any way during the last years, but instead got widely abandoned by the scene (and partly replaced by demoparty.net) due to that.

And personal problems my ass. It can't be that hard to send a HD dump to someone who's willing to take over within two years.

There is nothing wrong with not having time for the scene anymore, for whatever reason. But if you've built a platform used by the community, you simply should have enough balls in your pants to cleanly hand this to over to a successor.

This is pouet, not raveland. We are thumbing down productions here that fail to meet our taste. And I'm verbally thumbing down server admins doing a crappy job.

So, welcome to reality. "applauded by the community as a whole" is bullshit. I don't see anyone applauding on ojuice's status, most people simply gave up on it ages ago.

scamp has leading.

What scamp said. Change server or give admin to motivated ppl ffs.
added on the 2006-09-26 12:56:19 by iks iks
Well, what scamp said is not totally empty of sense, but what he doesn't know is that it's not really far from reality and what he says may be pending for months.

Ojuice has sure been unstable, has sure been forsaken a bit by its main admins, but at list it did what it did and it's no need to expect more than what the creators are able or want to give. If Ojuice dies they would deserve it. But you don't have anything to claim. Why do they suck if they made something when nobody else was here to do it and stopped doing it that much while seeing others doing it as well and lacking motivation to improve a system which tend to be outdated for something which, you shouldn't forget it, is absolutely vain, called demoscene ?

You can't force people to keep the fire. You can't say they have not done everything they could while ojuice is not dead. There are many things you don't know and which you will see in near future.

AND contrarily to what you say, You absolutely can NOT send a HD full of personnal data and registration codes to anybody out of the legal association. Orange juice is a legal 1901 law organization declared in French registers which has to conform to some elementary privacy rights laws. Ojuice without the users database would be an empty malformed shell because it's written in a proprietary technology gracefully let for use which makes the pages and scripts useless on a normal server.

If you want the CSS, I can send you a zip though...

Yeah, all fine. Still, this doesn't change that if someone says that the scene is applauding about ojuice being constantly up and running and getting improved, I point my finger at him and have a good laugh.

Which is the exact content of my posting you've criticized ;)

And again, I'm sorry if this sounds rude and impolite and all that. But seriously, WTF. "Proprietary technology". Hell, if there is a legal organisation behind it, go rent a freaking dedicated Windows server for 69 Euros / month in some datacenter, learn how to pay your domain registrars bill (yeah, expired domains was one of the 34343448787 reasons for ojuice/nectarine outages during the last 2 years). It's not THAT hard.

So PLEASE stop throwing that "it's just like rocket science" crap at me.

It doesn't really matter if it's due to incompetence or disinterest anyway, it's the result that counts.

And the result we've seen in recent years simply is nothing I would want to applaud at. It's that simple.
