Demos in Java the future ?

category: general [glöplog]
So, we have seen what Optimus can do and today it is not unusual for Java code to run at as much as 20% of the native speed.
Besides, you cn run it on your phone, (Ok, maybe not your phone) and most other modern platforms.
Therefor I propose that demos in Java is the future .

Java demos on your PC are the past.
Java 1k intros on your cellphone appear to be the present.
I don't think java is the future.

As you can use OpenGL in Java nowadays too, I see no big difference in making demo by using Java or C++...

who needs OpenGL, when you can code buttslow'n'ugly software 3d, with only 100 times the effort?

Plus JSR-184 on mobile phones of course... J2ME is a pain to work with though. Wish I had a .NET CF phone. :(

Flash for me thank you, new virtual machine (AVM2) is almost as fast as java, without threading support though. GFX API is slowly getting there, now what we need is lowlevel 3d support (not like director has), but there has been some rumours around that it's not coming anytime soon.

Demos in whaterver existing PL are the future. Then the question of code portability, yes...

Java is "slow" yeah, but how much is the CPU doing in your average demo these days other than decoding an mp3?
Unfortunately the 3d side of Java just isn't really up to date. J2ME is also very promising but not just yet a good demo platform, even though there was already a lot of progress from MIDP1 to MIDP2.

Java is by far my favourite progamming language so it will be interesting to see how it develops.

anyone interested in doing demos in java should checkout lwjgl...
it is like sdl for java, opengl coding is just like doing it in c.
opengl performance is nearly the same as doing stuff native.

for example check out the game tribal trouble.
(we also have done a demo using lwjgl.)

(...asking myself why i am writing this...)
