Seriously what do you do if its crap?

category: general [glöplog]
Suppose you are working on stuff for a long time and its not panning out, you just cant get it to work- what do you do? Drop it, joke prod it, false group release? What? Does it happen to you top groups or just us mere mortals?

Depends on what the nature of the problem is...

- If it's a technical problem, I usually find a good workaround or just force to find some way to get it work
- If it's a conceptual problem ("it doesn't feel good"), I just usually give it some time to ferment.

procrastinate.

Throw away the stuff that won't work (hard if it's > 50%) and start rebuilding from there.

Usually it's in these kind of dead-end situations that consulting skilled people can be of interest... They give you the extra energy required to make your own inner quantum leap.

Just find someone who has already achieved something close to what you envision and who is ready to speak about it.

1. realize that your prod is crap
2. release it anyway
3. profit? :D
4. console yourself with the thought of how you will do much better in your next release.
5. repeat.

Yeah, its hard to find good folks to work with these days imho, or who cares about what you have to say.

I release it.

Damn I hate that demo. Also, what mentor said. Or, then release it as Jumalauta..

Well in my case, I let it sit while I ponder what can I do to bring it out of this shit hole. Then once a wave of motivation hits me I work on it again.

<begin shameless plug>

Accession Windows demo finally coming real soon!!

</end shameless plug>

Put it on hold. basically, it's a waste of time working on something, you think is crap. Better spend time doing good stuff.
Then come back and look at it later (much later will work, too) with fresh eyes. That will give you a bit of distance and allow you to see where the crappy things are.
if your code works, but fx doesn't look good - invite a musician and let him change some parameters or even insert new lines of code.
the results are always cool!
btw, i read that mfx did the same thing with early (?) demos ;)
the procrastination advice is also good.
good luck!

I have some very old CPC leftovers I'd like to release as a bad mix of stuff demo, so that I can get rid of them and concentrate on a good CPC demo. But maybe I should start on less projects and for the serious ones I avoid releasing them, or release parts of it when I feel it's fun.

I drop it. I droped one crappy demo I was making for assembly06 and then made Iterate instead :).

imbusy: Speaking of Iterate - when is the always tricky follow-up demo coming?

if it has taken ages release it or if not, ditch it and make a quick hack in 3 days instead.
