Here's a rough translation of the Stara.fi review:

Nelly Furtado: Do It

Nelly Furtado's latest single pick from the succesful album Loose is called Do It. The song is also known for the fact that the foundation of the song is actually produced by the Finnish Janne Suni under the pseudonym Tempest.

Furtado's producer Timbaland already stole Suni's track Acid Jazz[ed] Evening for a ringtone back in 2005 and has since used the stolen basis in this Nelly Furtado song. The song theft was also announced some time ago in the esteemed Rolling Stone magazine.

If the outrageous theft is put aside, the song itself works nicely. The background beat and the electro style synths are well done. Nelly Furtado's vocals also sound very nice. The song clearly has hit potential and is guaranteed make people dance in clubs. Another version of the song features Missy Elliot whose input is also good.

But, since the basic idea of the song is blatantly plagiarized, the track cannot be reviewed as a standalone piece of art. Especially since Timbaland hasn't even taken responsibility for his act. Hence it's impossible to rate the song worth anything but zero points. If Timbaland would take reponsibility and had acquired authorization for the lending, the song would get 4 points. But under the circumstances the producer and the artist should be ashamed of themselves.

Points 0/5

Okkie: someone should put that out somewhere and try to push it to Timba-blogs etc. and get it on Digg and such. "Nelly Furtado song gets zero star review because of theft" or something.

Gloom, that might be a good idea, but I've grown tired of the whole situation and can't be bothered :) But be my guest!

Okkie: Yuck, but I'm not Web 2.0!!!111oneoneone-compliant and don't even have a Digg.com account :) Go on - "Do It"!

Can anyone spot the tune now?!
I definitely hear arpeggio

raina: thats quality.

LiraNuna : thats a lot trickier that tune. as it's probably sampled and just looped (unless tim can program the sid indepth, which i 98% doubt) , but pitched down in the sampler for some of the note, u'll hear it bends at one point, so it's in an audio format.

trying to mask it, but no so well masked on other tunes thankfully.

It will get sorted I guess, just its a LONG process and they are hoping people will let it drop. Ironic it was probably taken via the the net, and now it's biting back.

been discussing the ayo technology thing alot on irc lately.. and most of us think it's not a rip, rather timbaland playing wit his sidstation or random synth.

bzz : i'd still go with the sid sound for that, 99%.. it's all down to the arpegios =)

some synths can come close to making that sound, but not amazingly close to the sid chip (unless its emulated etc) and it's just padded out underneath. it's a bit like when I have a high ranged sound, I'd fill it out with another sound playing the same notes just at a lower octave to make it beefy/phatter.

you know what gave it away for me that it is a sample? the pitch bend , or when its pitched down. you can only go SO far within pitch bend, and i'm pretty sure i've never heard the same notes moved down in sid form (using glide etc), so thats why i still go with its still a sample, down the the physics of both audio and the abilities of the sid itself. It's far easier to do such a pitch bend with that range as audio.

it's not so hard to just loop a bit of the arpeggio, then loop it and put a bit of release/decay on it as audio =) , but its like it shifts down an octave when played , so it just seems slowed down a LOT.
the whole thing is though, we were listening to these sounds long ago =)

damn it takes all these "so called" trendy people years to catch up ;-)

"This track samples elements from the Ueberschall 8 Bit Stylez CD [track 16 of CD1] (An expensive sample CD that is sold to musicians of every genre, along with thousands others of its type) and uses synth patches such as the C64 Arp patch in ReFX Vanguard to emulate chiptune synthesizers. (This is what me and some other Timbo fans have decided)… so no stealing here."

gargaj: if thats the case its very amusing.. it's like me buying a ferrari, but then buying another one just to drive to the shops.. just don't make sense =)

having loads of different versions of the same things, i.e having the sample cd + the sid station.lol

I can understand buying loads of different synths though (one of my favourite things =) ) , but not the same thing with the same sounds on though
No, it's from Street Fighter 2 Alpha. This is what me and some other Timbo fans have decided... so no stealing here.

Back to reality. I emailed Ueberschall about this issue. Answer: "This is no sample from 8-Bit Stylez."

The guy has a SidStation! He just actually made something with it this time instead of ripping an HVSC track! He's still a dick for stealing Tempest's song but give the guy a break for actually using the module this time :)

as far as we still know, he didn't rip anyone off ;)

that's what I mean! Everybody already suspects him of ripping while he just used the machine this time :)
