a side note: in both us and eu, you can't patent algorithms since they are mathematical truths. but you can change the wording to "technique".

Correct me I'm wrong. Roger Penrose (Junior), a british mathmatician, patented "penrose tiles" and he gets money for toilet paper with that pattern, and those are what I would call mathmatical truths. :|

I think he patented the tiles, rather than the truths.
Although, Penrose tiles remind me a LOT of Q-Bert.

xernobyl: it's not a patent, it's a copyright over an artistic work (use of certain pattern for aesthetic tiling). all works of art are automagically copyrighted to the creater at creation time. patents are only given to inventions (australian ip laws are exception it seems).
nothing surprises me. i mean, a few years ago i'd have thought no one would have the nerve to tax oxygen, but it's going to happen...directly or indirectly.
