breakpoint 2008

category: general [glöplog]
scamp: I and some other people actually came to BP07 with a "Mitfahrgelegenheit". But that happened more or less on accident...

knoeki: go flip some hamburgers at macdonalds then, you still have about 4 months to earn ~100e (and that's entry fee+daily kebab to avoid starvation+daily water to avoid dehydration)

Being unable to bring girlfriends for free sucks... How the hell would anyone convince any non scener girl to attend breakpoint with such an entrance fee? I mean, it's ok for active/producing demosceners, but for non active ones it's a major no attendance reason.

shash: So you're still alive? Please, visit your friends in #demoscene at IRC-Hispano from time to time. We all miss you and, moreover, we need to talk about the so expected travel to Breakpoint, you know. ;)

shash, i cannot imagine your girlfriend would like being there anyway, if she doesn't think paying for it is worth it. it'd mean she'd be bored off her ass for 4 days.

shash: Convince your non-scener girlfriend to become a scener girlfriend. Problem solved.

too expensive entry fees ....
"unknown" is too expensive?
the entry fee hasn't even been announced yet.

Shash: You are one year late for this topic, but still: I agree with you that it sucks in that regard. But there is no better solution. "female sceners pay, but male scener's girlfriends don't" would be a tad bit problematic ;)

OTOH: I prefer today's times, where we have female sceners who are willing to contribute to parties and paying the entrance fee over the "good old times" where girls were regarded as aliens.

And compared to the past (say: mekka) there is another thing: Even if your girlfriend doesn't care about the scene, there are now other ways to convince her to come along besides "it's free": Lot's of cultural attractions - send her on a trip on the rhine by boat, visiting castles, or if she's into flowers and stuff, send her to the gardening show etc.

And finally, it's christmas time - wouldn't a Breakpoint ticket voucher be an excellent gift she can't refuse? ;)

i think the entrance fee complainers, no matter the level, should really rediscover the nature of events like breakpoint. they're events organised by volunteers, for fun. the organisers decide what the event is going to be like and how much that would cost. if you think you can do better, organise your own. breakpoint is not a universal right or anything, it's just a normal event organised by normal people, people who can't do magic, people who can't pay the bills on their own.

all this complaining is really not fair compared to how the organisers work their asses off to get this party off the ground. it's basically the least thankful thing you can do - even if you cannot come (be it for financial reasons or other), you get a lot back from the demos it motivates people to release, demoscene.tv, etcetera.

so, like maali suggested, shut up and go flip hamburgers.

Skrebbel: I never complained about the entry fee ;_) I really don't mind paying 60 euros for something like this, and yes, I know it all runs on volunteers.

heh, why would I complain? if I don't like it, I don't go.

(( think about that, whiny people who bitched about prices ))

One thing is being bored for free for 4 days, and another one is paying 60+ € for being bored. I never cared about the entrance fee for me, it's breakpoint, and I know that the money spent there is worth it. I was usually the one organizing the trip from Barcelona to Breakpoint, always had a production in the 4k compo, etc.

It's just that this year, coming with my girlfriend is a serious deciding factor, and with the increased entry fee, I guess I won't be able to attend. I could go into discussing this a bit more, but, as scamp said, I'm one year late. So, well, have fun :P

Skrebbel: I (and my girlfriend, as a matter of a fact) already have a job, it's not a money problem really, it's a matter of why would my girlfriend would want to pay it.

girlfriends are killing the scene :P

ps: I know, I know, I'm just using the last years entrance fee as a reference. And yes, wanting to spend time with the girlfriend kills being productive :P

last year's entrance fee was mainly because we lost one of our two biggest sponsors. if the sponsorship situation works out better this year (and we're optimistic in that regard), we might actually be able to lower the entrance fee again. mind, we still have the 2007 VAT increase in germany and notably higher energy/waste disposal prices than in 2006.

as i see it, the entrance fee will probably end up between 50€ (if the sponsorship thing plays out well and there are no new problems we have to solve) and 60€ (if we have to make do with only one really big sponsor for another year). for 2008, i don't see us going past 60€, even if we have to start slashing party features (smaller stage/screen/projector, smaller info-tent, reduced bus shuttle service etc.) to manage.

It's actually active girl-sceners who are asking for removing clumsy and outdated traditions such as free entry for girls.

And... mmm... 60 euros / 4 = 15 euros per day for a load of musical and non musical activities doesn't look that expensive for nowadays standards, I guess it's pretty much the same you pay for the plane or even a couple of nights or a night in a hotel.

Moaning is free, though!
oh, and please, take that with the usual grain of salt.

(though i still don't really see how the differences in entrance fee can be that much of a factor for anyone with >300km trip to BP - the changes in oil prices over the last few years have probably contributed more overall cost increase for a trip to BP than our changed entrance fees did)

Except for norwegians of course who, i heard, made gigantic pools of it just for fun and were swimming there, with seals.

300 EUR seems to cover my expenses (flight, NH Bingen, entrance) this year again.

Actually ryg's statement should be taken with a giant mountain of salt, or rather he should not have posted such a statement in the first place. We still don't know how our sponsor contracts and our budgets will look like. Until we know this, it's possible that the entrance fee will be 0 Euros, 60 Euros, 1000 Euros or that there won't be a Breakpoint at all. Discussing this is a waste of time.

Until we know, feel invited to complain that the unknown, undetermined entrance fee is far too high ;)

You should also keep the option of giving us money to go while you're not sure :D

shash: Do 60 euros really make such a big difference? I can imagine for local people but usually our total expenses (which afaik shouldn't be far from yours) including plane tickets, train, hotel, food, booze, mudfight betting etc were around 400 euros.

Bringing her along is a bad idea tho, but that's just a personal opinion :)

Well actually having 4 days WITHOUT your gf should worth EUR60... :)
Especially on easter time... some of them tend to get strange around those days...
