AtariXL vs C64

category: general [glöplog]
Tinctu... naah standard is 4 channels.. not everybody has two pokeys... my 800xl is unexpanded :)

many people i know who are into chip music just for the sake of it have two sids in their c64's for stereo/six note polyphony anyway. no good way to compare :)

could probably jam 4 sids in there, hehe

Graham:
I bought 7 nice 8bit ataris last year, non of them from sceners, 5 of them had lots of hardware upgrades, including 320k ram...
eBay is just not the way to find the standard 8bit atari, because atari users seldomely sell their holy hardware, it really takes skills to talk them into it :)

pokey cant even touch sid's dick...

Sorry, but building a "Midi"-Box with new Hardware isn't "old Sid" anymore.
Well, SID can controll an external small capacitor ciruit. That bring those impressive sounds. Just to mention that the Paddle Registers of POKEY are almost analog, too. So, if you want to build a MIDI Box out of 8 POKEYs, you might not recognize a difference then.
Also, don't forget, by joining all 4 channels of a pokey, you can put Music out that reminds of a 12bit-Sampler. Due to the higher clocking, the POKEY even can play much higher sounds even more precisely.

it would help a lot if you would have read the comments and spent a few seconds with thinking.

a) its original sid bass, simply the sid regs are controlled by the midibox
b) sid can not contro external small capacitor circuit
c) capacitor circuits cant create filtered squarewaves
d) the pokey cant even touch the sid's dick

Mental note: Don't make any jokes in an Atari vs CBM thread :D

4 pokeys will never sound this good not even when dead will walk:

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrgdErwTJ5o&feature=related[/link]

also this is the _V2_ version of the midibox, WHICH does:

"The Audio Output of the SID which plays the lower octave bassline is feedbacked to the Audio Input for increased resonance and distortion."

your capacitor blabla was out of context regarding the prvs video...

what does mean "almost analog" and "reminds of a 12bit sampler" and "higher sounds even more precisely" ? the sid can play any HZ you can whish for in a music. maybe you can use the pokey for an unhearable dog whistle. but thats not much of a use musically.

SID is controlling an external capacitor. That makes the resulting sound "very" analog sounding....> it IS analog.
The main difference to an original 303 is that SID cannot play clean sinewaves. They turn from triangle (when the filter is off) into near sine-wave when the filter is used more.

The discussion about which platform is better is pointless.
Most of the people here seem to know just one platform well and try to blame the other one.
So I'll try to teach you something about Atari and expect to learn something about C64.

Regarding memory expansions in Atari... This is nothing new or uncommon among the sceners. 320K RAM is more standard than disk drive type. There are several types of disk drives, including 1050, XF-551, LDW 2000, CA-2001, TOMS, Karin. Some drives have 6502, other have Z80. Karin has no CPU and connects the drive directly, without using a serial port. Sceners use not only disk drives, but also hard disks, PC interfaces and flash card readers. It is therefore next to impossible to create a portable production that loads data while it's running. For this reason demos use memory expansions, because they work same way - it's a standard that came from Atari 130 XE. And only people who know nothing about coding can say that the extra memory is used for storing animations. Stereo is also a popular (and cheap) expansion for Atari. I wonder why hardware upgrades for C64 are so rare?

Regarding music... I suppose that's mostly a matter of taste and I prefer POKEY where I usually can hear melody played with pure (actually square) sounds. SID music often consists of a bass channel, a drum channel and a synth, but no clear melody. One of my favorite SIDs is "Yes Comment", which is very different from most of SID "music" you can find.

A note to Oswald: I respect you as a C64 coder. I don't understand why you are fighting with Atari and its demoscene productions.

Just check this out if you have a working emulator (or a stock A8) available

http://www.atariarea.krap.pl/pliki/rozne/filter.zip

If a stock A8 can do this... what do you think a POKEY MIDI BOX could do?

@0xF sometimes I think they are two people.

One is the high technically achieved and intelligent guy.

The other is the Forum-Troll, only writing messages for instulting and blaming others, not accepting meanings and tastes of other people.

emkay, sid is controlling an internal on chip resistor ladder to achieve its filtering, maybe thats where you went wrong ? that part of the chip is analog indeed. also the bass in the video is made of squares, not triangles.

0xF: c64 has lots of external drives&upgrades, just none of them is regarded as default setup. the loader of cauldron & error 23 is 1541, 1570, 1571, 1581, FD, HD, MMC (flash card), PAL/NTSC-compatible, and it loads data while the demo is running.

Quote:

you can write music with no clear melody on anything. are you serious its SID to be blamed for that? I hope you are joking.

"I don't understand why you are fighting with Atari "

maybe because of utterly baffling stupid statements like SID tunes have often no clear melody.

Here's my opinion about your utterly stupid thread. You're all a bunch of whining pussies with a high level of inferiority complex - constantly trying to prove to the other that the machine you're using (see, it's not even you but a god damn thing with chips on a fucking circuit!) is better than the others'.

The best way to show what is your old, smelly, outdated, idiotic machine is capable of is to make something unique and/or extraordinary on it, instead of the never ending posting of youtube links and chip specification or god knows what else you've tried just to demonstrate your languid, uninteresting point.

Go and create. Bitches.

Lame thread. The History already proved that the Atari is far behind... in any case. ;) Without Taquart everyone would already accept it...

C64 BEATS Atari XL *massive*, we just added a faster drive:

(Hardwareexpansion was allowed, you said!?) ~8)

But I have almost 3000 SID tunes on HDD...
Some of them are really good...
i have an 800XL for sale.
