sweden said no to the empire

category: general [glöplog]
yes we did, we dont want no federal government, we dont want a federation from the icesea in the north, the mediterranean in the south, the atlantic in the west and russia in the east. we dont want a new superpower, in fact, we want one less. this autumn the european parlament will vote on the new european constitution, in which we will have a president, a joint military force, common taxes and so forth. we dont want this empire. politicians are dreamers, eagerly trying to build bigger systems, we are all young ppl here, with new ideas, unafraid of changes, but this change is for the worse. intenational cooperation is wonderful, and something sweden has been devoted to for decades. but this is not the same thing. in due time, sweden will have the euro, hopefully, by then, the direction and aim of the union has been changed.

I think it was sad personally. Now sweden is on america's list of rogue states, and will be invaded after iran. 18 months, and you'll be digging for oil as punishment for being a terrorist sigge.

everyone says:"USA is the only superpower on the planet, they do what they want, we need a second superpower!"
now that you get it, you still complain.

... waiting for china to get its act together ...

I'd rather live under usa domination than prc domination, having visited china. It seems to be moving towards a nice combination of lack of rights/freedom, and serious greed + commercialism. At least usa has more freedom, if you resist the brainwashing.

But yes, china will balance usa more i hope in the future. While europe falls apart because 10 countries want the eu to decide the shape of a banana, and 10 want their own goverment to decide it.

swedes are paranoid it seems
Don't blame me, I voted yes.

As a swede i totally disagree with sigge. I really dont see why we should have voted at all. As a member of EU we should ofcourse use EURO as every other country.
Some swedes have not understood that it wont get cheaper to join EMU later.

and some yes-voters havent understood that some of those who voted against EMU did it because they dont want sweden to become what ECB wants us to become. Also I hope the politicians have now learned that you dont make people change their minds by saying that they are nationalists, afraid of changes or just stupid. There were valid arguments for voting no, and people where fully capable of finding them

I prefer decentraliztion. Stop flirting with the big corporations. Perhaps it's time to think more about progress than profit.

gloom: maybe this is a hint that we havent enjoyed the EU cooperation?
added on the 2003-09-15 17:12:19 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
violator: unfortunately you can't get progress (by this i mean scientific/engineering progress, not social progress, which is a completely different but not at all less meaningful thing) without the big bucks... Its too bad that the big corporations that can't seemingly think further than the next quarter aren't helping either:-/

Thats why i'm waiting for China to get their act together. Since they are, i guess, the only nation in the world actually planning for stuff like building permanent settlements on the moon in the next 30 or so years...

could anyone tell me about a single valid argument to vote against this, besides the earlier mentioned "scandi-fool (tm)" complex? ;)
added on the 2003-09-15 18:05:35 by superplek superplek
plek: a selfish sense of nationalism and pride over something as insignificant as currency?

(you asked for a valid argument. not a reasonable one;D)

plek, sure i could. but its not like you would listen or care

Well, the majority of the swedish people were atleast smart enough to say no to the EURO. We never had a chance to say 'yes' or 'no' and I'm very sure that the majority here would have voted against it. Now we have to live with the expensive prices for nearly everything.
"Nothing will be more expensive with the introduction of the EURO" - haha, a 'good' joke!
added on the 2003-09-15 19:13:53 by Crest Crest
Plek the only valid argument against the euro could be attacking not the euro itself but the ECB. (european central bank)

That valid argument being that you believe your country's financial technicians can manage your currency better than the ECB does with the euro.

As far as prices going higher, maybe the prices were too low before ;)

Being against the Euro is short-sighted.
Yes, things did get more expensive, but over time wages will adjust to that. A monetary union means a stronger economy. With a stronger economy and its own strong currency, Europe has better chances in competition on the world market.
We shall benefit.

Vhiiula: Dream on, but in reality the wages are only adjusting to the low payment in countries with low wages (whole eastern Europe for example or countries like Portugal).
But why I'm talking here, the most people are ignorants anyway.
