What's so special about firefox?

category: general [glöplog]
yay we need more people who oppose open source like it is completely for the loss of everyone
firefox used to be good (< v1.5)
now it is a pile of shite

poi: yeah yeah Opera is good too if that makes you happy in your shoes :p

actually according to various benchmarks (source : french magazine PC Expert issue june 2008) opera is globally and technically as good as firefox : a bit more on the acid standard test, a bit less on the used memory per page, and quite similiar on the javascript execution speed...

my choice goes to firefox because it's more mainstream with a basic lightweight/efficient version and a galore of more or less nerdy extensions (whose some features are part of opera) ; no big deal :)

Decipher,

You really have not explained what is so evil about open source. Do explain, exactly how compared to the traditional software business, is it worse? I think you're confused.

You also point to a single blog posting on a gossip website that is known to make unsubstantiated claims. What's more, that posting was based on a single line ("Even so, I’ve come to the conclusion that the most successful case for MoCo will be when the corporation itself is sort of invisible.") on MoCo CEO's blog. Nowhere in there does he say he wants to hide the profits. The article has no other evidence about Mozilla Corp's abusive behaviour other than what I pasted. Have some source criticism, please. Do you believe everything you read on the internet?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation

Open Source isn't anything mysterious. You can go read the licenses and rest assured that once something has been legally released under such a license, that particular version of the code will always stay under it. There are no other strings attached.

do you believe everything you read on the internet? it's just 1s and 0s which can be altered easily...

look let's make it clear. i never said open source is evil. i myself is in favor of open source since if needed i like to see how stuff are done. but i'm completely against you guys plotting it as an anarcho-capitalist establishment, as it perectly is capitalist. but that's not evil, i guess you're kinda confused in today's world what is evil and what is not. ok if mozilla is capitalist i don't give a damn, but the poor coders showing effort for it should realize that they're a part of a capitalist organization, and i'm sorry to shatter your pink dreams but they perfectly can finalize whatever they want with a single signature. for fuck's sake it is a "corporation" in the end, legally they can do whatever they want with their products. if they want to mess it up who's going to say stop? they are the legal owners of the software not a community of random people known only by their nicknames.

so, let's put it to an end here. open source is not evil, but it's not as white as you guys are plotting it. in the end, it's mostly a tool for marketing as is the firefox download day, or st. valentine's day. maybe a bit more human friendly one but still it's one big tool that works like a charm.

what people are trying to tell you many times is that:
if that's ever gonna happen with mozilla, you can branch and continue another web browser as a team of community developers and it's perfectly legally ok. if that's ever gonna happen with the opera team, opera is most probably lost.

It's quote voluntary "slave labour". No one's being obliged to contribute to anything, and anyone is fully entitled to do anything he or she wants with it, it being licensed under GPL. I'm sure that people offended by the idea of someone making money out of it do not contribute to the project. I see nothing greedy or capitalistic or wrong with this.

Yeah. But unfortunately, there are companies, who are true parasites to OSS development. Like Cedega nonsense. Not only that wine can run much more stuff (i mean MUCH MORE), but you are not charged anything to be able to use it. Cedega just stole bunch of the wine code, made it closed source and started selling. Practices like that are making me sick..

I don't think Cedega is really a good thing these days but what they did was perfectly legal and not stealing. WINE was originally under the MIT license, they should've chosen more carefully if they didn't want it to be possible to make a proprietary fork out of it.

The medium is mostly irrelevant to the question whether to believe something or not.

anarcho-capitalist

Open source is characterized by freely sharing, copying and modifying code.* The code is free because it gives the users about as much freedom as the copyright holder.* This is very different from capitalism, where possesion of goods is the most important.*
Quote:
mozilla is capitalist

The Mozilla Foundation completely owns the Mozilla Corporation, which "serves the non-profit, public benefit goals of its parent, the Mozilla Foundation, and the vast Mozilla community."* Doesn't sound very capitalistic.

The users will not put up with it, and have the right to create a fork.*
Quote:

The people who wrote the code own the copyright, unless they signed it over (usually because they work for Mozilla).*

For some people, it is. I believe that for a lot of people it is an important goal in itself.

Also IHBT but I just felt like ranting.

exactly. I was expecting that reaction :) It was legal when it comes to law. But it was just moraly sick. Wine devs probably even didn't think, that such a crap can happen. But some people can do very immoral things, as seen everyday.

yeah, just like the Stichting INGKA Foundation which owns 100% of IKEA doesn't sound very capitalistic! read up on your economy, you've no clue what you're on about.

that said, of course open source and capitalism are fine models and happily coexists, and it's perfectly ok that mozilla is a for-profit organisation. imho it's even perfectly ok if they make money while many volunteers help them with that without getting anything back. they don't code for mozilla. they code for their users.

it's the marketing that bugs me. some year and a half ago a large group of Dutch open source enthousiasts put a big bucket of their private money together to buy a one-time full-page firefox ad in the "Telegraaf", the country's biggest newspaper. it was paid for 100% by volunteers, from their own pockets. that means those people were either completely uninformed, or just plain stupid. you don't pay money for an ad so that some company on the other side of the world can give more bonuses to their senior management.

and it keeps being the same thing all over - nothing is wrong with earning money with open source software, but i doubt just as many nutcases would wave the "firefox download day" into the face of everyone they know if they knew there was a 60 million dollar company behind it. sure thing, 60 million is not a lot. but it can buy a few adwords allright.

firefox needs no paper ad.

firefox is cool because it respects standard
apart from that; it's mostly bloated and slow; it has a huge bandwagon full of stupid zealots

i hate all the marketing around it
i hate those people who put IE killing scripts on their lame blog flooded with extracts of their empty life

to me, the world jumping day makes more sense than the firefox download day
did you jump, btw? i forgot. they should've mailed me.

Opera, everything else is just cumbersome and slow, and no i won't download a million addons for FF just to get it to work the same as a standard Opera install.
That said, Opera on Linux i found pretty horrible, but still better than FF.
