havoc: sure, there are dangers in every area of life. and that's why our mothers constantly warned us to look in both directions before crossing roads. she told you to be VERY wary and cynical of those roads and not treat them like a kindergarden playground.

reph: nobody is forcing any of this on us, and there's no plan to take over the scene so far as i've seen :)

This kind of thing is an individual choice.. some people will see it as slave labour, some will see it as soul selling, others will see it as a fun way of making some extra cash and learning stuff.

for me, it's simply that i have an app in my head that i want to see finished and widely spread asap... because i want to use it myself, and because i think a mass market approach will benefit the concept... financials are really unimportant, i just want to see it get done and take over the world. think of the whole deal as a double-edged trojan horse... :)

and why exactly are you against this idea? your only justification for it all appears to be the opportunity to sell our leisure time at slave-labour rates and non-essential sponsoreship at parties that provide 12ft plasma screens.

Your train obviously passed loonyville and kept going to crazytown.

For those interested: http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/16/ifund-app-store-success-future-apps/
Quote:
Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) has started an iFund blog covering topics about its $100 million venture capital fund for iPhone developers. KPCB has currently funded five companies with about $30 million of investment capital. Those companies include:

- Pelago – social discovery and location sharing through an application called Whrrl which is live on the AppStore
- iControl – a home automation and monitoring solution available in Q1
- ng:moco – iPhone games launching its first titles this month
- GOGII – A new social interaction and marketing platform, launching in Q4
- An unannounced venture launching in Q1

The company is excited about the prospects of the App Store and note that iPhone application downloads for the first 30 days exceeded all other US carriers combined in a quarter.

According to our estimates and M:Metrics data, that’s more iPhone application downloads in 30 days than all US carriers combined have in a quarter.* That means a relatively small base of handsets (~12M, mostly US) is dramatically outperforming the other 250M.

So they do indeed have the funding to go through with their "demo competition".

If we do something really good, do we qualify for round 2 and the chance to win the $100m jackpot? :D

I have no idea. ng:moco has released two highly rated iPhone games though, which I suspect was always the plan. :)
