Bitshift 2008

category: general [glöplog]

I would like to ask anyone that is planning to attend bitshift to register at http://www.bitshift2008.net .

Few have registered and if we dont reach our target within a month we will cancel the party. I dont know if this is because ppl choose to register at a later time or that the swedish scene really is dead. But if you are comming please register cause we have no intention of filling the hall with elf impersonators.

The well established scene only parties in Sweden have an entrance fee of about 10-20 euro and only attract 60-100 visitors if they are succesful. Bitshift which was announced with a very nice invitro just 3 months before the party, has an entrance fee of 50 euro and apparently aims at 250 visitors, which seems a bit optimistic since its a new party and most people have no idea who's behind it.

The swedish scene isnt in a very lively state, but perhaps more people would sign up if the party was better promoted, for example on scene.se , also being able to see who has already signed up would be nice.

Not to mention putting the party just 2 weeks after a norwegian party is kind of blocking most of the norwegian scene from going..

the norwegian scene are slackers? two weeks is MORE then enough time to prepare something! Go support the .SE scene! Ooga ooga!

the site looks nice but doesn't work very reassuring:

1) no travel info/recommendations
2) electricity is provided at regular intervals WTF?!
3) showing up 27th is OK, but bring a wificard WTF?!
4) 0 known names on the website
5) no info on sleeping facilities :(((
and last but not least:
6) we will host some gaming tournaments :(((((((((

250ppl for a first demoparty is extremely ambitious, not to say impossible... so you will need a lot of LAN gamers to make it work. no matter how cool the location, i'd still rather visit a dedicated demoscene event, regardless of the number of visitors...

I think they mean that the physical network is not available that early, only wireless.

It actually doesn't sound all too bad and I would love to tak to "that finish guy" :)

space - not time intervals, i guess :)

okkie, mueslee: i hope/expect/assume so too... a less ambiguous statement on such issues wouldn't have hurt, though.

Hehe, didnt think about the "intervals" ambiguity, but im pretty sure most people read it as a distance thing rather than time. Most things i guess we just thought the sceners would take for granted :

* Sleeping facilitites - check
* No promise of network until 28th - check
* Promise of network 28-30 - check
* Electricity 24/7 - hopefully ;)

There is one part that is completely missing on the page though.. ..the email for info (for say group travel arrangments). I dont know how it slipped by, but ill have the webguy fix it. You do recieve the link if you register ;)

As for the size of the party. The aim is 250 people, we would like every one of these to be sceners but we also realized this might be to high. So we set our goals at a minimum of 100 sceners out of the 250 (it looks like we need to recruit anyhow).

I have personally contacted the limited amount of sceners that i know and i have also met with just about every major gamedeveloper in the nordic countries to have them spread the word internally. The feedback has been great but it hasnt yet been reflected in registrations, hence the emergency.

Also seems like there are more finns willing to travel to the westcoast of
sweden then swedes. This might be the sauna thing.. .but cmon sweden, there is a bar damnit.

As for the (almost) crash with kindegarten there is not much we could do about that. Our date was set before kindegarten was announced and the location has no other free weekend.

I do agree that the entrance fee is abit steep, but we rather lower the fee when the final numbers have been crunched then the other way around.

As for known names.. ..do sweden have any?

nina: 2 weeks should be enough for anyone...

ps: the problem is most that norwegian demosceners don't even go to both the parties norway have. the chances of a major amount going after only 2 weeks is horribly slim :/

that said, of course I hope I'm mistaken :)

most that = that most

thats not really a swedish party organizers fault now is it?

I didn't say that :)

But since they went out saying they wanted the nordic scene, I just commented on the sad fact that part of the lack of registrations from norwegians probably come from the closeness to kindergarden..

But yeah, seeing the people already registered is a must :)

get a couple of active and (internationally) well known .se sceners on the orga team *now* just to do pr. word of mouth always works best.

I don't know what happened to the Swedish PC scene actually. In 2004 it was pretty alive, today it's basically dead. The C64 scene has fared better. The Amiga folks seem to keep to themselves.

what hollowman said. Still trollhättan is close, I'm still under consideration.
