VJ/visualization software for gig (OSX = love, win32 = "ok")

category: general [glöplog]
So, does anyone know of (or even better: USE) any VJ/visualization software when playing live? If so: what? I would prefer something for OSX, but if something really cool for Windows is out there that will be fine as well. The key thing is of course "realtime", because I really, really, REALLY hate these things that just plays looping (out of sync) videos with some plasma on top of them.

This is for a gig I'm doing in Oslo in a few weeks, so I need some time to familiarize myself with the interface and such.

There's this... http://neonv2.com/
I don't know if it is any good :D

for OS X try the best : Quartz Composer (in the Dev folder).
Yeah, quartz composer on osx will give you a whole ton of power, although you'll want to learn it and create your basic effects + stuff before any event. It works well with vdmx for vjing (or so I'm told, the stuff I do tends to crash it, but i'm not exactly doing standard vj fodder).

gloom: I'm doing a gig tomorrow using processing, which runs everywhere and can use opengl. (processing.org) It'll all be driven by the singer's voice, using an external usb mic, the sound lib I'm using is supposed to also work off of line in.

Here are 4 of the 7 effects I threw together over the last week. 2 are opengl thingers. I can give you code if ya like.

processing is a good tool also.
I suggest hooking up with a scener ;)

i use resolume, version 2.3 ...

oh, that's not realtime. that's sample-based.

vvvv for windows is a directx-based equivalent of Quartz composer.

kelsey, freeframe plugs are realtime, you don't have to use video samples. anyway this approach in reso is quite limited - 1 fx on each clip/pic, and 3 on the mix + blend modes.

i would suggest visualjockey, neon is fine but there are some stability issues. pilgrim was fine also but is unavaiable now.

yeah, freeframe is realtime, but the set of effects included is rather limited, and you still will need and with FFT you can do pretty much. tho, of course, it all depends on your sample libraries... :)

resolume 3 looks awesome, judging from what i have seen during those 30 seconds when i took a fast glimpse at the fresh beta.

anyhow, neon WOULD BE fine if it didn't crash every other second, loads of things are not implemented properly - i just don't dare to use it at gigs.

visualjockey i could never really get to like. i'm giving it a second glimpse, tho.

yep, neon is not gig-safe for me also, i prefer vjo.

well, i've done some stuff in the past just with pictures and freeframe, not that bad, but as i mentioned i missed stacking more fx. reso has most perfect interface for singletouch touchscreen for me, the only thing that is resolution-dependent.

Don't know if this is any good, however it says VJ and OsX, and Quartz Composer all the time:

I've heard CoGe mentioned a bit too.. no idea if it's good or not though.

kineme.net is the best place I've found for quartz composer discussion - it's mainly a dev site, discussing plugin development, but you get some very useful plugins from there and also very good help if you get stuck. There's a lot of good info + some tutorials too.

Speaking of tutorials, I have an untergrund site with some QC info on: psonice.untergrund.net (there's a few example files on there too, plus a fully documented mini-demo i did for a music disk). I've been working with QC a lot, and don't mind answering questions if anyone needs help with it.

Otherwise, for a musician-based act without a proper vj why not simply project some hires videos? Willbe's performance uses that method and the result is quite nice as well.

i use resolume 2.4 -> www.resolume.com

yeah. it just plays loops. but with bpm synch and a shitload of (good) freeframe plugins. you still can get some nice effect.

also: don't use shitty free standard vj-loops. ;)

oh and also: use a midi controller.....

2.4 crashes for me all the time. it crashed under xp and it crashes under vista too. it continually switches up the primary and secondary displays... in the end i decided to switch back to 2.3, from which i really lack the BPM counter. :(

I'm most likely going to use Neon v2.5 (alpha). Trace was kind enough to provide me with some content from XPLSV-demos which will fit quite nicely. Now I just need to find out if it can play large AVI-files WITH sound..

neon does some good stuff, but alpha software while playing live? that needs balls :D

I used NeonV2 on several gigs Dubmood/rzr1911^fylecell did ... if it was not my shitty laptop, the soft was quite stable, if you're not trying to fuck with all the freeframe plugins available.
