Windows 7

category: general [glöplog]
Are there anyone who have tried it yet?? - is it better/faster than Vista as promised, and is it using dx10, to backup Hyde´s post, then all "new" demos must be written so they are compatible with dx10...

I've tried a few demos on it, and i don't know if it's my imagination but debris runs better on my lappy using Windows 7.
I tried it, and it sucked like all versions. Maybe less than Vista, but still worse than XP.

we've been testing the beta out here, it's looking pretty good although we havent been using it for actual mission-critical things

I had some minor glitches with the quadro fx beta drivers on my laptop's win7 installation but aside from that I'm not unhappy with the current build. The only thing I don't understand is when I'm reading exaggerated praises of win7 coupled with the usual vista badmouthing. As far as I'm concerned Vista isn't bad on contemporary hardware and Win7 Beta 1 on the other hand isn't that over the top either. Apart from the new task bar concept which I'm not sure what to think of as of now it's mostly an incremental improvement. As for the speed - didn't notice any real difference with demos.

paralax: vista was a pile of shit when it launched, people uninstalled and kept the bad memories. Win7 seems to be what vista should have been, so people look at it and think it's good..

The new start bar looks like the osx dock, and seems to work the same.. as somebody who uses both, i prefer the dock to the task bar but you need quick access to your apps etc. still. I guess the osx dock with the windows start menu would be about perfect, although on mac i tend to use spotlight and just type the app name, and on windows i hit windows-r and type the exe name..

psonice> you may want to give Quicksilver (mac) or Launchy (windows) a try then
i tried quicksilver ages back, and didn't get on with it somehow. Command->space and type a few letters is good enough anyway :)

For windows, it's mostly work, and that's mostly doing stuff in just a few core apps or working on other boxes i can't install stuff on, so it's a bit less practical. Pity though, remembering the exact .exe name is a pain and we're not installing any desktop search stuff so far :/

i tried windows 7 beta 1 on a virtual machine, so i cannot say much about speed. the new taskbar is a bit strange... i'd prefer that applications that are running are separated from not running apps. and i don't know yet if it's a good thing that only icons are shown and no names.
i don't like the osx concept at all because you have no clue (at least at first glance) what is really running at the moment.

but can you revert to classic look?

Yeah, i only buy it when it has the classic look

Wait... did you say buy? People actually buy Windows without being forced to (windows tax)?

Windows 7 is just as slow as Vista.
The rest is marketing.
Just deleted that partition again after 3 days.

well, its still a beta...

i didn't like the new taskbar, it's confusing, even if you change it to the best way possible, i would have prefered a "classic" taskbar setting
same with the start menu and things... where is the "classic" start menu...
i don't like all that overloaded stuff, i want it plain and simple.

If you weren't able to see what programs were really running, OSX would be very confusing indeed. However, seeing as that is rubbish, because running programms are easily spottable, I'm going to put my name in the "I happen to like OSX"-column. :)

"Anything new scares me! Give me the Windows 95-look back!" :) There is nothing wrong with something being advanced, yet simple to use. However, I agree that this new try at ripping OSX-brilliance is pretty failware.. but I still have to hope that Windows 7 turns out to be better than Vista, because my coder is going DX10 and I'm _not_ installing Vista. ;)

yeh, install xp, install launchy+rocketdock+xpize+taskswitchxp on it and you have turned your xp into wannabe osx without the annoying macfaggot fanboy stuff AND the ability to run dx stuff :)

I like the idea of having no distinction between running apps and non-running ones and it kind of makes sense considering most apps launch almost instantly nowadays. On my KDE I have a system tray, task manager and equivilant of a system tray, so sometimes there are 3 icons visible for one program. Now THAT is shit.
