outreach effort at worldcon

category: general [glöplog]

the 67th worldcon was in Montreal this weekend, and some people of the organization asked me to do a presentation about demoscene.
So this is a small report of the event :)

So, indeed I did it and it went surprisingly well. At least when we consider how unprepared I was and how unadvertised the conference was.

The room was small, but this was a good thing as the sound system was consisting of a pair tiny speakers Kate (one of the 2 organisers assisting me in that speech) had bought earlier especially for the occasion, and that we almost blown off :)

People were very interested, loved what they saw, and even asked questions throughout the speech.

Now I must admit I showed some demos without the conscent of the authors, my apologies, but I was way too last minute :P So here's a list of them demos, with the reason why I picked them up. Plz note that all of them were shown in realtime (no captures!) and did run very smoothly :)
-re-recycle: basically cuz it contains this: "we are not trying to be a videogame; we do not want to be an art movie; we're just kicking it demostyle!" so it breaks any misconceptions right at the start
-asm04 invite: demoparty pictures and some stats
-masagin: to show them a party was held in north america, was sponsored by nvidia, because of the series of flags (hey look, it's international!) and because it's so damn good and trippy :D
-aether: to end up with something as stunning as posible
I also wanted to show other stuff like a diskmag and musicdisk etc but didn't have enough time.

there was around 17 people during the presentation, a good part of them were just showing up during the thing and decided to stay, very few left :)
We also had a 1 hour pause (Corry Doctorrow needed the room for his thing) and then we resumed with a full hour of just showing off demos. IIRC list was something like: Chaos Theory, Contre Jour, Life Force, Sans Titre, Obsoleet (captured), Next Level (captured), 1995, Debris, and maybe some other I can't remember.
Big thanks to Kate and Val to make this happen, every occasion is good to watch demos on big screen :D

Sounds cool! :D
the one i was forgetting in the second list was stargazer.

also it was very funny how people weren't sure if they were supposed to applause or not.. as they wanted to but were fearing applauding a screen could be silly.
