Demoscene progression

category: general [glöplog]
Also: please remove the 64mb restriction since it doesnt help demomakers one bit. If people want to create highend content they should be allowed to. With this artificial restriction it is as if highend content isnt even appreciated or wanted on the demoscene. If a demo takes up 512+ mb of space with nothing to show for it people can always vote accordingly.

If someone did release a demo that 100 people worked on I wonder what the reaction would be.

Insectecutor: reminds me of those long (german) groupmember-lists, like haujobb and farbausch to name some

quality is not in numbers, but deadlines are.

Deadlines? Shit, I'm 15 years, 6 months, 2 days, 3 hours and 42 minutes late coding Egg n Spam III for the Amiga. Now, that's pressure!

trenox: you know you dont _have_ to release your demo at a competition, right? if enough people would do more 64+ megs demos with due usage of the space im sure party orgas would eventually catch up with the hint. only seen fairlight and nesnausk do that so far..

*insert here comic relief on how gargaj killed the aspirations of new hungarian sceners with short sighted size limits for a democompo featuring a certain tribes remake*

Just set the limits in MB per minute and everyone will be happy ;)

Gargaj: i see you point. I think we (that is, me talking and you trying to run away) discussed it at kindergarden a month or two ago. I haven't really made anything scene related since '97 so i'm probably not the the right one to come with arguments about the mechanics of todays demos/intros.

pantaloon: you shouldn't throw out such a statement with no further explanation. People willl just start wondering if they don't have a clue. Or.. the people who does have a clue knows that they do... so i guess it's not really a problem :). Not that i have a clue.

ryg: ok, i agree, but outsourcing key-resources for the sake of an innovative demo isnt anything new, nor anything anyone should be ashamed about. if you cant do it properly, get someone to work with you who can. in popular demo that was sarah hill for you. for many others its usually ripped music.
What rubbish. It's not "usual" at all for demos to have ripped music. If you want to find something "ripped" in many demos, take a look in the textures-dir. :)

Also, there is a distinct difference between "not good enough myself so I'll find someone to help me with it" and "not good enough myself so I'll just steal this from the internet". For one, the latter disregards the PROCESS, which is half the point.

I flew to Sweden with two jobs: 1. deliver a laptop, 2. come up with an idea for our next 64k. We had a small discussion, which turned into a small argument, which evolved into a minor blitzkrieg about whether cheesiness is a good idea. We're still coming up with ideas, but don't have anything solid. I came up with an idea for an effect (to get away from our "object show" status), but it might look like shit.

Whatever we do, it will be interesting or it won't happen, and we know some good folks will be competing against us. Saying the demoscene doesn't evolve is bollocks. Try to actually win a competition and then see how much thought you have to put in to it to get in the top 3. We're using our imagination right now, and so are other sceners.

meteorik: nah, im done with 64ks. atleast until someone does a granular synth i can fuck around with. no patience / time to get into sound code myself and no interest in doing 64k with same old sounds.
added on the 2010-01-02 23:13:30 by psenough psenough
granular? I'm using laplace transforms on the standard distribution function to do resynthesis by reverse synthesis. Every sound will have random harmonics. Granular synthesis is an experiment that went wrong.
