Agenda Circling Forth - soundtrack discussion

category: music [glöplog]
because jazz asked for it.

(hoorray haujobb is back!)

I think the demo is great and the soundtrack fits the ambience and the pace of the visuals. Or the other way round. Doesn't matter, it's a perfect match. Still, it's ripped music and it should have been credited - smash didn't know it was ripped - and probably some people somewhere in some server will get fucked. Oh well.

I suggest cncd and fairlight open up a compo for an alternative soundtrack. They will get the best musicians around in the demoscene to make their version. Ah, one rule: no timbalanding kthxbye :)

Or, just replace it with sumo lounge - one note crippled and it should work...

Just make a remix contest out of this instead of arguing.

What a ripped soundtrack ?! It's a shame. Shame on you evil ripper shame. I hope your soul will burn in hell

It's a remix. They should have credited it as 'Socrates - Queen of the Universe (Varia Remix)' or something like that.

If they change the music, they change the demo. People didn't change music for State of Mind or VIP2. (And those were just lifts)

This discussion has me now listening to the Phos album from Socrates, which is really good. So it's pretty much win-win for me :)

In the end, I don't give a shit if the music is sample-heavy or not. It works with the demo. They should have properly credited, but that's all talking in the past.

Don't change art please.

okkie sums it up perfectly. if anything was bad, it was that they didnt't credit as Socrates - Queen of the Universe (Varia Remix). but i think Smash has alluded to the miscommunication.

the scene is not a commercial enterprise, noone is making money from this and it is also not the moral guardian protecting the interests of the music industry's profits. so who gives a shit. we do what we want if it works.

let's wait what happens with the permissions before going anywhere. Visuals and Music always goes hand in hand and making a remix is asking smash and co to remake the demo aswell.

Now if the whole permission thing turns out to be a major clusterfuck with lawyers running around trying to shutdown the entire thing then i see a point for them to remake the demo to preserve the visuals in a REMIX... but apart from that.. things are what they are now.

Yeah, if they get permission leave it. If not, fairlight have some additional work ;)

To be honest though, I'd be very happy to see a remix. Who would turn that down?

I wouldn't :)

Am I the only one getting a "Suicide Barbie"-flashback here? :)

Btw, people will not get in trouble for hosting this. A remix may be spread until the remixed party complains. (If you didn't ask them) So the worse that can happen is that it has to be removed, but I hardly doubt that will happen.

Look at all the remixes people put on the internet every day (go to hypem or smth) and ask yourself the question if it all matters that much.

kusma: yeah, and they eventually made a version without vocals which actually really sucked :(

Pretty much the same case as Suicide Barbie: after BP2007 http://pouet.net/topic.php?which=3968&page=4. Again an original track not generally known by the audience and no mention of credits. Suicide barbie was probably more dangerous regarding copyright/piracy than something from the 70s..

Track has original value etc, and if properly credited (and permitted regarding copyright..) it would be ok imho.
Smash says he didn't know the original but found it obvious that it was sampled / based on something. In that case I wonder why the musician wasn't asked about the original to make proper credit where credit is due.

Hmmm, that would mean they work their demo with one soundtrack?
I actually wonder if they just ask several musicians if they have unused tracks on their hd and then make a choice.

My point about it is that it's ok. It's a remix.. okay. Not crediting is like:
1/ timbaland
2/ just acting cool until it's discovered... but before it is, just act super cool because everybody believes it's yours. Seriously, I don't think blamstrain need that..

Hopefully, the demo rocks, really. If it was a demo from newcomers, they would be burning right now.
and okkie: what's the problem about changing art? you see it every day, specially in this democratized (new word?) world where everyone has access to free tools to make and change art. Personally, I really like the demo and how everything fits, I'm comfortable with it, I just don't like 1in10's attitude, that's all.

So just change the .nfo file?

a side note: our prime-minister is called Socrates, and he's quite unpopular at the moment, so maybe don't change it just yet - otherwise the HUGE portuguese demoscene community will get on a rampage.

another side note: there were as many portuguese sceners at this breakpoint as there were japanese sceners.

That's my big issue as well.

eh? his attitude seems to be that he really doesn't give a damn about "copyright infringement" and bogus IP laws. that's a very good scene attitude imo, it's the attitude that old Fairlight crackers had which in turn spawned the demo scene ;)

homeworld: no, it isn't. there's a difference between "Game X - cracked by Fairlight" and "Game X - done by Fairlight" and if you don't get it ask Timbaland cause he also doesn't.

reminds me when a guy at some Euskal submitted a radix track (just changed the tempo value) as his own and thought he would get away with it. he later apologized. in the same Euskal all the portuguese prods were disqualified because we namevoted our stuff. we later apologized. you see the pattern?

varia is a project based on derivative work recycling to begin with. all of their tracks are mostly recycled /regurgitated from something else. and they bounce styles from disco to ambient to whatever. it's a core part of the project i believe.

check out their webtv for more http://varia.tv/

am waiting and hoping to get one of their albums released at enough sometime in a near future actually. didnt know someone was making a demo about it :D

anyways, my point is: mashup music genres have feelings too!

well if his intention was to give the impression that the song was original and made entirely by him then, yes, that's totally lame. but i honestly do not think that was the intention. as he has said (and it's clear from his other work) a lot of what he does is heavily sample based. cultural mashups and such. it's pretty difficult these days to rip anything without someone finding out pretty quickly. eventhough I personally wasn't aware of the song and the Vangelis, they seem pretty well-known to many. so for 1in10 to try to claim the song was his would be pretty dumb. i doubt that was his intention.

varia is 1in10 + blamstrain btw. think this track was more blamstrain than 1in10 though.

Can you please point me to your website? I understand every work of art you made is free for me to resell?

Your walking on thin ice here, in my opinion. Just because you don't agree with a law doesn't justify breaking it, and afterwards stating to the judge that you thought that the law wasn't fair, and shouldn't apply to you.

Regarding the soundtrack: I definitely thought it used a lot of samples (seriously, did anyone really think that these guys did their own 70:ies style recording and THEN sampled it?)

I thought that they asked friends of theirs to play a '70ies style recording and then sampled it. Is that such a crazy assumption, this being a DIY culture. Like I said in the review-thread : a lot of bands still play this music, and a couple of friends I know make crazy psychedelic rock all the time.
So yeah, I really assumed they asked for a song that was cleared of all copyrights, and remixed it. It never once occured to me that they would use an existing song without crediting it.
