Upgrading computer - a few questions

category: general [glöplog]

1. Can you view old 4:3 aspect demos non-stretched on a widescreen monitor?

2. Do most demos run in Windows 7 64bit, or do I need to keep a windows xp partition for compatibility?

3. Will most demos run on new ati/amd gfx cards or should I buy an Nvidia card as it seems it's the most compatible?

4. Can a netbook with atom processor run Amiga AGA emulation smoothly?

Thanks! :)

Depends on the monitor

Or rather on the graphics card and the drivers. In general, yes.

1. Most cases, yes. just look in whatever control program that comes with your card/driver. Most decent monitors also support fixed aspect scaling (which looks better than GPU scaling in most cases).

2 (and 3). very much depends on the demo and card combination. With 7 x64, nvidia gtx 280, the last 2 farbrauch demos haven't even run, along with several not-so-old ones. With my old laptops with ATI chips, most everything not explicitly NV-only ran, even with Vista x64. With this being my first nvidia card in a serious machine ever, I'm beginning to think NV "compatibility" = bullshit.

4. don't know.
Buy nVidia. ATI has cheated on Shader Model specifications by labeling cards SM 3.0 compatible when in fact they weren't. Show that you don't tolerate being tricked as a consumer and use the power of capitalism to punish ATI by directing your money to nVidia and never buying ATI cards in the future. ;)
Win7 x64, gtx260, never had a problem here.

Yup. Just adjust your driver settings.

Most of the 2005+ demos run just fine without further tweaking.

The scene seems to favour nvidia, so ati might give you some headaches.

No. Same for dosbox et al.

the other day i tried heaven 7 on a laptop with windows 7 32, didnt work. aaaargh. i think it worked on the same hardware with win xp, so i would like to know if other people would confirm this...using ddraw, dont know if its supported on 7.
this cant just fall into oblivion like that. feedback anyone. thx :)
Heaven7 works flawlessly on my win64 box. If it doesn't, the issue is surely not ddraw, but more likely driver related. There is a hacked high-res version floating around, maybe you can try this one.

I made that hi-res version :)
btw i think it's sad that you've got to click on "making of" on h7 pouet page to have a chance to know about it, i would have put an explicit link, since most people with a decent compu wanting to see this could benefit. but oh well.

so it works on win7. nice.
dunno what did break on my machine. had heard something some time ago like direct vram locking in ddraw wasnt allowed anymore on win 7. i guess not.
