PPOT deleted from Wikipedia

category: offtopic [glöplog]
So the wiki article regarding PRESS PLAY ON TAPE has now been deleted.

Did I miss a thread somewhere, or was this subset of our demoscene culture somehow missed, or not considered relevant here? Seems a bit bizzarro.. Apparently it turned from a discussion about the capitalisation of PPOT to a full deletion for not having any significant coverage?

Disappointed. Would have liked the chance to voice an opinion to the wiki admins, but it looks like its all a bit too late now. Any idea on where we go from here?

wikipedia has their own set of rules, and that's pretty much the bottom line. anything beyond that is just crude language.

Would a demoscene wiki make sense?

Boozembly article is also gone :(
Isn't/wasn't there a scene wiki run by some Dutch dudes? Shifter and some people iirc...

wikipedia's main advantage is also its greatest disadvantage: the fact that it can be modified by anyone for any reason...

And round up a gang of missfits and sociopaths and you can get anything deleted if you put your mind to it.

It just shows the evil in man.
This guy deleted it.

For this reason as it seems:

Apart from that all I'd also like to question SchuminWeb's motive for the deletion, from what I've heard there was a minor quarrel between him and the band about the capitalization of the band name, which then resulted in the deletion.

Exactly what crosbow said...

i don't like the way wikipedia handles these things. they delete too much. it just sucks.

are they running out of server space or are they being assholes for the heck of it? "i can delete you. so you, like, don't exist anymore. because wikipedia is the universe. and i rule in it. let this be a reminder." you know. that kind of tyrannical BS.

i just have a strong feeling that there is some group of suckers sitting and gloating behind the mysterious wikipedia deletion button that only some can see.

Wikipedia is falling to the New American Madness. The insanity of war. Deletion (killing) with no purpose. Sane discussion locked out.

Gargaj:

The guy who makes the page that you linked to apparently works for the UK prime minister. Which means that he is evil. Just an information.

You know, I don't recommend visiting evil people's websites. :]

Yes there was. SceneWiki was started for exactly the reason that it's wholly unrealistic to expect the demoscene to matter in the scope of wikipedia. Nobody gives a toot about who quoted who in prize giving ceremonies except for demosceners -and a mediawiki installation is merely a few mouse clicks away. It felt like a really good idea at the time.

In practice the wiki was quite painful to maintain. A handful of people were really great with adding articles, but it was largely overlooked. Most people came and went for updating personal info (in some cases removing said personal info). In short: nearly nobody quite really wanted to deal with archiving this kind of stuff.

Some major shifts in personal comfort, hosting hell and having scene.nl in a registrar hiatus for a while meant the thing dropped off the map about two years ago. I remember somebody actually delved into archive.org to get some dirt on Limp Ninja, but that was about the only time somebody seemed to miss the wiki.

Buy hey, there's a backup and scene.nl is actually in my filthy pair of mittens again. Question is, does anybody care? :)

Why don't you open a wiki at scene.org or pouet? It would be full with stuff in no time.
