I saw better desktops on the garbage. I don't remember seeing laptops, but I'm sure there are some. People usually like breaking them, I think.

Received it yesterday. Really nice one (and has Gods and Lost Vikings, installed, yay!). But I have a BIG problem with external floppy disk drive. Disks are read nice, but when I want to copy a file from floppy to hdd OS screams there is an an error. DOS says the same (missing sectors or sth.) I have checked nearly all the 1.44 disks which I have, with the same result. Funny thing happened when I have formatted one of the disks, copied the file to disk and then copied it to the floppy. In the end I received well-known error about corrupted file. I've opened the file (.doc) from A drive and yes, it was corrupted. Any ideas what to do? Seriously.

hm maybe your 1.44 disks are broken. I made the experience that time kills most of the floppy disks :(

okkie, I bet my head you won't find anything better in Poland at the same price. Maybe in other countries, but I don't mind.

anyways, it came with 16MB ram, 800MB harddisk and a CDROM....the accu lasts 2 hours.

In solicon valley they dont have computers as far as i know. :D

In the USA they dont seem to gather electronic junk...they send it all probably to china...

My new netbook just arrived. What should I do with it?

I bougth 1GB of ram for my laptop today...

...and now it has a total of ram of 1GB. I wanted to buy 2Gb, but I thought it was not worth the price. Anyway, I hope to extend the laptop's working life for more 3 or 4 years now :D
Other than watching demos I don't really see a need to replace my 4 year old laptop as my main computer.

Haha I had that chunky compaq - the SLT386, mine had Windows 3.1 and 4MB of ram, 640x480 VGA in greyscale. I used to play Alone in the Dark, Doom (slowly), ZZT, Commander Keen etc. It weighed 6Kg, I used to take it to school but it was murder to carry.

Anyhow - funny about laptops, I literally have been given 20 Celeron 2.4 laptops with 512mb/40GB HD/Intel 845/54Mbit Wireless (Toshiba A10) for free because my company does IT refurbishment (we also have been given 42 desktops (P4) for free).

To think you paid for what you got...madness! We refuse anything below 1Ghz that gets donated for refurb.

Inspired (in part) by this thread I decided to do a little experiment and believe I've maybe found what the ultimate solution for a computer of this caliber is. :)

I installed Windows NT 3.51 Workstation SP5 and it's working out great for me. NT 3.51 supports FAT16 in addition to NTFS so I didn't have to repartion my drive to keep DOS either which was really nice.

I'm now writing this message on the computer with the Off By One web browser, which is far better than what I expected.

Finding a SSH2 compatible terminal client seemed difficult at first but it turns out plain old PuTTY works fine if you just download a copy of a .DLL file seperately. :)

So if you manage to get a network adapter (or if you have a phone line still and can use a modem :D) I recommend NT3.51.

Sorry to hear you're having some trouble. Old disks and old disk drives can be a bit bitchy at times.

Relax guys, in 20 years some ebay nut will pay handsomely for the laptop he had as a child. (Well, exaggerated, too many models and brands of PCs.)

I would keep it for watching all those tunnel and fractal demos. Or replace the innards and screen with modern screen and a home computor mainboard of your choice? :)

Fold-out keyboard still looks good, at least. There's one in a museum in New York somewhere.

An average 50€ mobile phone can probably do much better than that laptop. I have several old machines that I can't throw away because of some odd vermin eating the logic side of my brain, but I do acknowledge that my alarm clock has better specs than those.

BTW: I have a 386 Toshiba white laptop with 56k modem and Iomega zip. It used to run Mirc, Nethack and Neuromancer, so it's worth keeping ;)
