Advice?

There doesn't seem to be a "general" advice thread & I've got a question - so here 'tis.
I put a DViCO FusionHDTV DVB-T Lite in my box today (free from the tip). Ive plugged it into my lcdtv/monitor and RF-out. I'm running Debian Squeeze with a couple of kernel mods on up-to-date nvidia drivers.
gnome-dvb-client tunes and records perfectly (to an un-demuxed .mpeg) but I can't get a picture with any tv clients - I've tried xawtv, fbtv, zapping, tvtime etc. & i'm pretty sure I've got all the libs I need.
I've been to debian/ubuntu forums and linux tv wikis to no effect.
I know it's got a tuner (dev/dvb0) - how come no picture? dmesg on demand.

Are you sure you don't have a recording daemon that already has reserved the device?

Jack is running but that shouldn't make a difference, should it?
I'm using jack with hydorgen & lmms - I'll top tomorrow and see, bedtime now.

No, what I meant that check that you don't have any software running that reserves /dev/dvb* before you run xavtv, fbtv or any other software.

I've killed gnome-dvb-daemon - that's all I could think of, still no dice. Can't think of anything else that needs to access /dev/dvb0. :-(
Interestingly I found this - "bttv0: tuner absent" in dmseg. Hmm... modprobed bt878 just to be sure. Now I know there's a tuner there otherwise gnome-dvb-client wouldn't have tuned/recorded.
I shall investigate further. Thanks for the suggestion.
