.... I just saw Avatar

category: offtopic [glöplog]
...on TV last night, I hadn't seen it before. It almost makes me want to switch from realtime to rendered!
Anybody else have this craving? :)
It made me want to switch from being alive to killing myself. Horrible, horrible, movie.

the movie badly sucks ass. it's a pathetic example of how humanity perceives itself - as being heroic and fighting for a fair cause when confronted with obvious injustice; however reality is quite different.

Avatar? Nah! What a bad Western! It's a bad copy of "Dances with Wolves"!

The worst thing of Avatar is that it's a very predictable movie with virtually no surprises.

Avatar is a copy of the "Dances with Smurfs" South Park episode.

I never got the hype around Avatar. Everyone said how amazing the 3d was, but I actually preferred the 3d effects and the general CGI of Polar Express and the recent Christmas Carol adaptation.

As for the plot, well it was quite laughable really.

ahh yeh. yet another avatar thread that only warms up all the clichés about it.

let me say: if you feel like going from realtime to rendered, just do it. there's still some things that won't do in realtime. for avatar it's basicly the lots of details. the audiovisual style is avatar ownz but it isn't something that couldn't be done in realtime.

The PLOT? Heck, i'd watch it for the plot, as i did watch this.

For what it's worth, at least Avatar shows us that Cameron is still dead serious about attention to detail. Visually its one of the best (if not the best) big budget sci-fi flicks of the last decade or two, and the set design + the whole world of Pandora has a good sense of being "real".

Basically i was totally sold at this point.

And although the plot is 100% unoriginal, it's at least executed well.

..and, also, the fact that the movie has made almost 2.8 billion dollars in cinemas alone, is probably a testament to the fact that it's not all shit.

uncle-x: given the amazing attention to detail in the movies, it still blows my mind that THIS got approved for the title logo. It looks like absolute shit :) The first time I saw it I mistook it for fan-fiction.

What?

I especially didn't like the design of Avatar. Pandora looked way too colorful and CGI-ish to me, not to speak of its animals and all the other CGI crap. It actually looked more like a weird videogame, than a movie - especially not a "realistic" movie. District 9 came out around the same time and was somehow visually and designwise far more pleasing to my eyes, than avatar. Even with a way lower budget. For some odd reason I also thought the "Shrimps" from District 9 looked way more realistic, than Avatar's smurfy guys.

I kinda compared it to Cameron's own Aliens movie, which was a no brain action blockbuster as well, but a very awesome one with memorable characters, a tad more sophisticated plot and gorgeous special effects.

Here's a imho quite accurate Avatar review: http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/other-movies/avatar/

About the box office: Of course it made quite some cash, because of the higher ticket price for its 3D effects?! Also, Justin Bieber makes a lot of cash as well, so his music is not all shit?!
