Screen Savers

category: offtopic [glöplog]

Hi!

We all love watching cool demos with pretty graphics, special effects, etc.

What about screen savers for all OS'? I like Voodoo Lights, ATI's screen savers (e.g., Moebius), Real Slick (in both Windows and Linux/Debian), etc. I even like Dream Aquarium, Goldfish, and Marine Aquarium. ;)

Thank you in advance. :)

I've been using Electric Sheep for quite a while.

My favourite is "Black screen", in combination with "tune off screen and lock computer after 5 minutes" energy saving features.
the matrix-effect should be pretty much available as screensaver on ANY os!

Maali: Which ones? They're so many. I like the original 2D one and the Matrix sequels with codes showing the pictures like the heads in Xscreensaver. I never liked the 3D Matrix ones.

I always disable the screensaver for some reasons.

Un-surprisingly this save my screen quite a bit too.

Wait, weren't demos nothing but glorified screen savers

I just use power saving too. But I did use one I wrote before. It was basically the classic TV noise, but also took live video from a camera and did some motion detection, then added in any motion with a 'ghost' type effect (basically a realtime version of the film 'white noise'). I meant to release it, but never got round to it. If anyone wants that (it's for mac) give me a shout.

I use my own Plane9. It's sound sensitive and has some shaders/scenes from a few intros.

Energy saving FTW, but of course the demos are a great base for screen savers, e.g. the "Moppi Flower Saver"

I used demosaver for a _long_ time and just loaded the top 10 or so demos into it. Demosaver is awesome : D

I tried Plane9's screen savers which is nice, but dang their settings are confusing and complex like I want to customize stuff like the speeds.

AntDude: True, I made the program to be flexible but the downside is that for even trivial changes you do need to understand the editor. For people that know their way around shaders starting with one of those scenes is easiest since they are basically just one big shader with some extra expressions that creates the input values into the shaders. Following a tutorial might help also.

Xetick: Maybe you can make a newbie friendly who doesn't have to hack it so much? ;)
