This.

It's not that it doesn't count, it's just part of a different scene.

You are not doing demoscene outreach if you skip groupnames, handles, pouet, scene.org, compos, bigscreen and demoparties...

IMHO we should not be ashamed of the "scene" in demoscene: the community, skills and the history rulez (and I'm including pouet.net ; of course there is room for improvment)
But it's perfectly fine if some are.

Sill, right now, the demoscene and the guys-doing-audiovisual-stuff-in-
JS/WebGL are two separate scenes.

You can't think it's doesnt matter ("it's still realtime audivisual stuff"), but don't say "it's the same".

I personnally think it would be better if the 2 scenes were closer (demosceners being aware of what happens in the JS/WebGL world, and vice versa) (and that's the point of the DemoJS demoparty btw).

Is this AGAIN that old discussion about the demoscene versus the rest of the generative, real-time, creative art?

I think gasman killed the thread but here's my two cents of hate for the year 2012:

I've read somewhere that some believe the webGL demo is not advanced enough, that the scene could do better and blablabla "we're the bestestest, why the world don't want to realize it yet?"
I wonder how come the scene, filled with a rather notable amount of talented guys can also provide so much FULL-O-SHIT judgemental, rather stuck-up weirdos who really think they are all amazing and deserve to be known.

And the most amazing I found is to read a new definition of the scene per thread page, coming from both known and super-elite-respected people and others I don't really know if they're up to the next big shit "the scene" will provide in the coming years (if any).

Worst (or funniest?) comment must be when iq says he must have missed a meeting or two and ask who agree on this or that definition.

Whut ? I thought the implied definition of the demoscene was something like a scene gathering around real-time generated audio-visual productions; But it seems that in the last years some evil decided it would also include: that must be provided by people recognized as part of the demoscene, +100 scenepoints if you provide us with memes from our own scene, also motivational thumbs for the newcomers! We're all friends, let's celebrate!!!
Oh wait, no... actually I believe many believe they are friends with the best, which make them believe they are the best, which make them love being a part of the scene but I'm getting lost in this discussion because there's soooo much to say about these 7 pages of intense bullshits.

And well, HNY to my friends in the demoscene :)
if the guy who makes it says its a demo, its a demo. if they don't, it's not (so don't go trying to claim it as one).

tadaa! solved.

The scene police - such a bunch of keystone cops.
[clarificaton] knl, my comment was ironic, and a reference to Bill Hicks. basically, i was stating that demoscene is not "decided" by anyone. [/clarificaton]

Hence my doubt into parentheses
and also produced by my desire at that point to not prefix everything with "I think that" or "in my opinion"

ahah, true that we've never ever witnessed any demos not working on either nvidia or ati.

I disagree. "Demo" is a generic english term.
The guy never said it was a demo (as in "demoscene prod").

Fantastic, let's purge everything from pouet that wasn't specifically declared as a demoscene prod :)

or we could always claim all the animations on the interwebs are wild demos huh?

it's cute to want the demoscene to be considered the superset of anything realtime / generative, but unfortunately there are other scenes doing it out there that exist outside of ours and are thriving.

it's not a case of them not being good enough to associate with us or anything like that - it's simply that to them we are an irrelevance.

sad to see people in the scene running around trying to claim ownership of anything they can that vaguely crosses our space to make themselves feel more in touch, rather than doing the kind of stuff that would actually compel the people in those scenes to be interested in us again.

I see it totally the other way round these days. We're just a subset of the real scene, which covers all the cool stuff people do with computers (whether it's realtime or not).

There's no ownership to claim, unless you really want to nail things down to demoscene, processingscene, us or them. But there are no real boundaries between all these sub-scenes, people and ideas are flowing between them all the time.

I like the fact that you are all arguing over a production (be it demoscene or not) which is a simple skybox with a ripped heightmap which some of us can't even see because it doesn't work with some Atis (and there's no youtube since kkapture doesn't seem to work with browsers/WebGL? :-) ). Nice!

Happy new year, you all :-)
