MindCandy Volume 1: PC Demos now a free download

category: general [glöplog]
@kb: Multi-part RAR because that way I could sign it with my authenticity envelope, so you know it's official and from me personally. And also recovery against 1% bad bits built in.

If you would prefer another distro format, let me know and I'll make it available for you somehow.

I'd still say I'd love a digital download of the MC3's bluray, at least for the purchasers... would love to see it fullhd on my tv set, but I don't have a bluray player (or planning to buy one).

I have all three originals (and the DVD's ripped so I don't use the physical media), but the bluray is being elusive

there was a torrent for a pirated version already!! ;)

Maali, I actually looked for it once, but could only find the DVD... might look for it again later at home, but if you happen to have a magnet or torrent url, I'd love to have it by mail or facebook :-)

(and yes, I can show proof of purchase if needed, blah :-) )

yeah, i was talking to numtek, not about the bluray.

There is a torrent up for Volume 1 already. As for volume 3.. aside from the aforementioned pirated DVD rip, we don't have plans to serve up the 50GB blu-ray for download at the moment.

Regarding the edits to Megablast and Nonstop Ibiza.. we were nervous about copyright issues. The later volumes were a little more relaxed about it, though the Route 1066 soundtrack has edits too. IIRC the Megablast intro was a low-res animation, so I guess if you figured out the original format you could tack that onto the start of the DVD rip. As for Nonstop, you could just rip the DVD and replace the soundtrack.

arent all the demos on mc3 captured in 720p anyway?
added on the 2013-02-05 15:51:22 by wysiwtf wysiwtf
Yes, all demos on MC3 are captured and shown in 720p. The exception are in the features/extra section which maybe higher or lower resolution.

As for releasing the 50GB Blu-ray version of MC3, help us spread the word and sell the remaining 800+ units we have remaining and we'll make that available on the internet too. We haven't had as much luck selling the MC3 edition and we don't know why. I'm guessing most of that scene grew up and left and we have no way to reach them.

...that, or the main attraction for it (i.e., hi-def videos of demos) required an already-obsolete-when-it-came-out physical format player which noone (except for console junkies, people who got cheated by wallmart employees, and extreme movie aficionados) owned.

I guess most of that "grown-up-and-left-scene" were actually the ones who (like me) bought it to contribute, even not having a bluray player to see it. It's the only physical media I've bought in the latest years, and that's because there was no digital download available for it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel "cheated"... I knew what I was buying when I did (and again, I did it because I wanted to contribute to the project), but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate the digital download of it.

I bought an HP laptop with BluRay and joked about that MC3 will be the only BD disc that will be worth it. Then I upgraded the Vista OS in my laptop to Windows 7 and I can't use my bluray drive. I still can't. Something like I wasn't supposed to upgrade, drivers didn't work, there were some other solutions that didn't work here. So this was the only BD disc I would ever use, and I can't :P

Anyway, I watched it in another BD capable laptop. But oneday I'll need to extract the data to rewatch (I am mostly doing it for the commentary and special features anyway).

Isnt there a way to sell MC3 through digital distribution ?

Seems like a lovely incentive, but...

We no longer ship outside of the US due to huge Jan-13 postage increase. Please use our distributors.

Unless I'm wrong in assuming that the 800 copies are right next to your desk in one way or another, consider footing the extra cost to me instead? I'm sure it cannot be as bad as having people suffocate in an avalanche of unsold Mindcandy. Consider blackmailing people with that notion!

One side of MC1 was devoted to DOS demos and provided unparalleled access to really nice captures of the real(time) deal at a time when it became really hard to run them on then-conventional hardware. MC2 dealt with Amiga, also not quite the kind of thing you could buy in stores for quite a while.

MC3 ...my two cents is that nobody needed it at the time of release. Most demos on there have faithful YouTube captures, or run just fine realtime on available hardware. I liked the decision to skimp on resolution in favor of 60fps, but I totally get why people had less incentive to buy MC3. Sorry.

They were captured as high as possible (1920x1080 where possible) and resized down to 720p using a 36-tap sinc filter.

720p was chosen because it was the only choice for 60 progressive frames per second. 1080p can only go as high as 30fps on bluray so that was out, and early tests with 1080i (bluray was less than a year old) showed incompatibilities between deinterlacers.

Not really, since all streaming providers of reasonable repute (amazon, itunes, etc.) that I checked only support 1080p @ 24fps or have some other odd limitation like 3 hours maximum running time. No streaming web video site other than capped.tv supports 60fps, something that still baffles me in 2013.

I ment more like paying to download MC3

DOS demos with effects running at 70 and/or 72 fps remain left behind...

Yeah, but that's not really micksam's fault -- he could take 70fps input but unless you're still using a CRT you'd get dropped frames (unless your LCD can run at native 70).

I want to seed vols. 1 & (now also legally free) 2 torrents, but where are they?
added on the 2018-01-02 02:33:35 by darwin darwin
Both MindCandy prods on pouet.net have a [.torrent download] link. They're still being seeded, so just download 'em to seed yourself.

there was an other demo compilation (video renders basically) on a CD, it was called "Dreams". is there any info on it, where i can get it, etc. ?
added on the 2018-01-04 12:43:06 by nagz nagz
I think I had a "Dreams" CD, but it was more like a big collection of demos with a menu? Might be remembering wrong, or it may be something else, but it was definitely a CD. Pretty certain I downloaded it from scene.org, but I can't see it there now.
