I accidentally booked tickets to Revision. Wasn't going to this year but somehow there's some dark energy that draws sceners to Germany every Easter.

the biem rule is killing us

Kinda off-topic, especially as I am the one to take care of the whole BIEM issue, but still:

Does anyone have a midi-tower ATX housing (can be without power supply) that he'd sell to me and could ideally bring to Revision? I want to build a home media server, and I have all parts but a standard housing, just an old Dell Vostro one that I thought would fit, but Dell doesn't stick to standards.

And about the BIEM rule:

The truth is, an all-expenses GEMA-and-the-like pass would easily kill the Revision budget. It's not like we want to exclude anybody, but unless somebody comes up with several thousand Euros for it, we're out of choices.

And to make things worse: We're even lucky to still be in the 2012 plan. From April 1st on, we'll be on the 2013 plan that will be much more expensive. At this point, we're still working out a way to at least allow the DJs to play BIEM-protected material, but I am still out of ideas how to do that next year.

Trip booked, hotel sorted, two productions in the making (and potential third even!) and since I'm an amateur scrub I don't have to worry about the biem thing!

netpoet: oh i dont blame you at all, its just fucked up that the situation exists. :) i guess it bites us a lot cos so many of the musicians we work with or have worked with are members of those agencies.

are biem protected musicians even allowed to play out their own music without coughing up?

what about old demos using music by biem-protected musicians - are you going to have to exclude those from demoshows?

at least demos using gangnam style are not only shit, but also illegal. i cheer for that!

smash: talk to kusma, he might be able to get you in contact with lfODD, who is not registered anywhere.

Maali: To be clear on the phrasing here: playing a song by artists protected by a copyright collective associated with BIEM is not illegal. It just means that the host has to pay for the usage of it.

Smash: Netpoet can give a way better answer than me, but as far as I understand it, once you choose to be represented by a copyright collective you allow them to collect royalties on all your past and present work - no exceptions.

To answer your question: An artist can surely play his own songs, but if he's playing them publicly and the listeners are charged money to be at the venue/place where he's playing them the host will have to tell BIEM about it and pay royalties.

I predict additional 1€ tickets for the concerts at Revision 2014 :)

Puryx: that could easily be 10-20 Euros.

So the artist cannot choose the price by him/her-self? Great :/

GEMA(-members) decide on the amount to charge for fees, GEMA collects the fees and GEMA then distributes the monies to its members, according to a black magic distribution key.
Indiviudual artists can't decide on how much to charge which event for playing their music.

BTW: What about individual guests playing GEMA-covered music from their desks at a party? Could we get you into trouble with things like this?
added on the 2013-02-20 16:27:09 by ted ted
ted: I don't think so, since that music isn't played from our PA and we have no control over that. I'm not completely sure about that though, since I'm no copyright lawyer, so this is just a guess.

Honestly, I have no expectation that ticket prices won't rise anyway over time, it is like a law of physics.

Venues rise in price, materials costs increase, the cost of gas to transport gear, etc.

That said, I hope members of GEMA have been doing some activism to have more control over when money is charged for their music in case it actually hurts rather than helps them.

The only way to avoid price rises from year to year is to have some kind of endowment, and that's rare for events afaik. Thus is life.

Happy to pay a little more to see Revision keep existing.
pay-to-view for sofasceners would fix all problems! ;)

demopartyz.to - illegally streaming the scene since 2014

the pay-per-view stream would be a fun little social experiment.

We got a (c) claim in 2011 on our youtube video from our NVscene 2008 pc demo. (music by Paniq)

After we me made the demo he sold the track we used. after some email exchange with that company and paniq it was solved though and the (c) claim was taken back on the youtube video.

Hope some smart solution will be found so Revision can excist for years to come.... Why not set up some kind of donation system for sofasceners who are watching the stream ?
