When: First demoscene-party? First demo?

category: parties [glöplog]
scene.org lists parties back from 1988. But were there parties before?
And does anyone know when the first demo (including cracktros) was released?

The first demoparty was held in 1924 in the wooden shack of Professor Dinglydong. It was attended by 12 people, most of them trappers and hunters and they presented the first demo, which was basically a dead fox.

Yeah, magic will know. He was at the first ever demo party when he was 12. He's still 12 now.

Afaik, in 80ies most parties were copy-parties where people gathered to exchange pirated material. here (and pages before) you can find some of the first demos, if you dare to call 'em so.

Those old intros were already linked by v3nom and about (copy)parties, there were some for C64 at least in 1986. I'm sure there were some sort of parties or events earlier too..

You may take a look into "Kunst, Code und Maschine".

Going by the sorted list v3nom linked to.. I wouldn't count the commercial demonstrations used in shop windows and such. That would make that September 1981 cracktro for the Apple ][ by "The Pirate" the first "scene" release, according to Pouet.

As for the first "demo" from a scene group that wasn't for a game crack, possibly Omega Demo 2 and 3 from 1985 for the C64.. or Omega Demo 1, if it's on csdb.

As for the first "demoparty", well, they were copy-parties back then as was said. According to Scenery, the first was either The Danish Circle party or Danish Gold Copy Party, both July 24-26, 1987. But the first party with demo compos was probably in 1988.

I'm sure someone can dig up older examples but that's a start.

First 4 of these 1986 (and of course, Byterapers party just mentions 1986 in the title) ones should fit into copy-party/meeting category http://csdb.dk/search/?seinsel=events&search=1986&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

I... I... I'm sorry but: what Adok said.
Of course the book may not be 100% complete (in fact im pretty sure its not), but it really is a good and well researched read starting in the early 80s.

First official demoscene party was Symposium '96, though I did attend a small party organized by CiH that was to celebrate issue 18 of the Atari ST diskmag, Maggie & also the fifth birthday for the diskzine, during the middle of August, 1995. Dates may well have been August 18-20th, not quite certain on that. The gathering was very informal though - no compos or anything like that.

First demo, this would probably have been TRSI's classic Red Sector Megademo, which was shown quite often on someone's A500 at the local computer club meetings back in the late eighties / early nineties in Wellingborough, Northants, UK.

Felice: What? And... What? :)

I only know about Amiga, there's bound to be some computer club meetings, even with BASIC programming "competitions", and various demos to demo off computers in shop windows starting from 1975, but I'm sure that's not what the author means.

Earliest demoparty should have been somewhere around 1985-1986, perhaps in Germany or Northern Europe, and perhaps for the C64. My definition would be there would have to be some form of releases of some kind of productions that were shown to an audience and voted on for it to be a demoparty as we mean it.

HQC and ECA were early on Amiga with crack intros, but the first Amiga DEMO should be Multiscanner by Spreadpoint.

First Amiga demoparty should be Danish Gold Copy Party 87.

There may be "conflicting evidence" on Pouet, I haven't looked.

Hm, apparently I should have looked. I did have a suspicion that it looked newer than claimed. Entry updated with notes. So, Multiscanner seems to be July 1987, which gives us some contenders.

There is a problem with the definition. If we include crack intros, then of course there are the very early ones, perhaps even late 1970s, crack intros for Apple II games.

My personal definition is that a demoscene *demo* is stand-alone, isn't an intro before something else. Intro vs. Crack Intro is harder, and do we count boot crack-intros with just a scroller?... why such a difficult question?! First megademo, or first trackmo would have been easier ;)

Also, the prod would have to be spread and not f.ex. submitted as shareware, and it should spread the glory of the group name or individual.

Next try then,

Demo:
Uridium Intro V1.0 (says both demo and intro in the prod)

Crack intro:
I can find nothing older than the 1986 HQC cracktros, perhaps this.

Photon, oldest Amiga crack intro is this by Megabyte.

oldest release recorded on pouet seems to be from 1978 according to this.

We'll soon be reaching page 2 and no one has mentioned Piccolo Mouso yet.
always makes me think of havoc's version:

Not a demoscene demo, but there is the Minskytron:

It was created in the early sixties(?) by Marvin Minsky. The program eventually evolved into Space War.
