My father gave me his Commodore 128 to play with when I was 12, and it got me into programming. I used to be really into playing with code, but haven't been since I started college. Last tuesday I started my first college C++ class, which hopefully will get me back into obsessively playing with code again. Maybe I can have a prod out before the end of the year, but for now I am just a leach.

So in the mean time, I was 12, and I am from 4chan, and what is this?

*NECROPOST WARNING*

It's funny. As in strange not haha.
In the last few years on this site I've come across some incredibly kind and sensitive human beings on this site who haven't been afraid to not only accept someone into their fold but also stand up for me (and others) when the 'general community' are against them.
In the last few months I've also come across some incredibly rude and disrespectful members of this site who have not only jumped immediately into name-calling and abuse but appear to have also tried to cause trouble for me outside of this domain and website.

Now I'm guessing here but I'd say the majority of the members of this site are male, white collar, IT professionals who are aged between their mid 20's to late 40's (I'm defo in the latter end of the scale and I would like to reinforce here that I am generalising). We mostly seem to work or be studying some form of ICT. I say "we" because despite being attacked about it I fit into these demographics. If anyone feels I have maligned them by suggesting these groups then I do apologise.
As a relatively small group and a generally socially 'quiet' bunch (again - generalising) you'd think such a group would be welcoming of others that "didn't quite fit the mold". You'd think wrong I'm afraid.
Strangely it's the 'old guard' here who seem to be the most swift to be judgmental. I remember in the early 80's (let's be honest here if you're more than a decade younger than me @ 41, you probably weren't really part of this) a real sense of camaraderie and community between those of us who owned Atari 2600's or Commadore64's. We shared software/cartridges and ideas for how to play the games and write simple programs.
Ultimately it's our attitude to the new guy or the guy who doesn't quite fit in that really determines whether people come here and stay or view this site as a bunch of snobbish elitists.
I've stopped telling people I know about this site because of the attitudes I've come across lately. To me that's kinda sad. And it does a great disservice to the genuinely 'nice' people here.
The rest of you may wish to think about that. Or not, whatevs...

Yeah, I have to agree. This can be a very unpleasant place at times, and old topics like the hentai/CP thread really don't set a good example...

That said, thought of visiting #auscene? I quite liked our chat there. Sure, the inability to see a party due to travel constraints is a major problem, but pouet != demoscene. I try to avoid pouet when possible because of some attitudes, plus I have been ommitting some prods of mine to be added for similar reasons. (plus I am still unsure as to whether code experiments entered at parties count as prods, or code experiments in general. I prefer demozoo for such prods since its just a DB, and no drama)

I happen to fit your "IT professional aged between 20 and 40" group. And I guess I'm one good slice of the pie that caused you to resurrect this thread, so let me answer as honestly as I can.

Back in the days of the original RIT, I didn't have anything against you. It was around the time of the closure of your random women thread, that I started having problems with the way you handled the situation. And I emphasize this, because it's clearly a reaction upon an attitude that started after years of membership and was continued over time, and not towards a "newbie to this site" upon registering.

To put it simple, me (and many others) have some problems for pouet to have a public showcase of women pictures, and we have heavily expressed our concerns in a civilized way. Ranging from the lack of women in the scene, a woman feeling not welcome in pouet partly because of that thread, and amongst many other things, the public exposure to pornography on demoparties. Fortunately the scene is maturing, many sceners now agree that the community should try to allow women to feel more welcome in the demoscene, since many of us already have families and children of our own; you can now see many children running along party halls actually.

Some other sceners already started to question if they should still be a part of a community that shamelessly showcases women and pornography, as if they're nothing but emitionless models.

That's just hitting the tip of the iceberg ringo, my problem with you is that you completely ignored all those hints, rebelled against the reasoned closure of the random women thread by continuing with your unchanged attitude, and started polluting an otherwise harmless (random thread reloaded) thread.

I really have no other issues with you. And last but not least, I would never tell you "piss of to 4chan". I'm all for civilized discussion, really, if both sides stick to it.

Yes. This is a community site, but by (mostly) not participating in the main thing at hand here, you are mostly excluding yourself from the community. In your four and half years here as a registered user, you have managed to comment on eight (8) productions, of which two (2) are somewhat relevant. I don't know how many you have watched. You have created exactly zero (0) productions with demoscene relevance. A thread of girl pics does not count.

iow, you have zero street cred in the community and thus are mostly seen as yet another annoying cunt that discovered pouet for getting his daily dose of attentionseeking fulfilled.

Also, of the 32 topics you have opened on the BBS, exactly one (1) is somewhat relevant to what Pouet is all, or should be about. This is not your general chitchat site for bored IT professionals, this is where people interested and participating in the demoscene hang out.

There's a difference between new guy and new guy.

Out of curiousity, how did you describe the site to them before that?

I'm pretty sure I wasn't the first 'name caller'. When I CBA I'll search for the posts to verify that but I'm quite confident that I wasn't the person telling me that I knew "jackshit about anything" or many other personal attacks.

Whoops! There it is.

wtf is a Commadore64? Sounds like some cheap chinese imitation, probably a SQNY-branded 7-bit-platform

ringo: that is a classification of a certain group of pouet users, and warn you that people classify you as one of that group. how can that be a PERSONAL attack? ;)

but you can swap 'annoying cunt' with 'bored IT professional' if that sounds more civilized.

as pictures that got posted have been random but at the same time inspiring for new demo-stuff !

I don't remember this random picture thread having ever the initial purpose to inspire for demo stuff (there is that random demolike picture instead). It was for laugh and total wtf. Not saying someone might not find it inspiring, but it's the first (second) time I hear about this and before that I always thought it was for pure entertainment.

yeah! pictures of elisa cuthbert inspire me to do whole other things than demo stuff, to be honest!

Pictures of aliens inspire me to leave the demoscene for a while and go out there to the mountains and stare at the skies.

As someone who has regular contact with [young blokes] who are studying ICT at the uni I attend I have often in the past suggested to those guys I thought might be interested (mostly coders and VS munchkins), I would often suggest pouet as a starting platform for some of the more esoteric programing structures. This usually stems from the fact that I'm older than them and that I run a business involved in the industry.
Not so much anymore.
I'm sure it's not going to impact on your target audience garg. I do find it interesting how you always seem to enter these threads that I'm involved in.
Anyone else might be a little bit paranoid. Me I just think you're less of a successful troll than I am.

TBH since the name-calling has already started I'll leave it here. Feel free to apply whichever logical fallacy you wish to to this post.

Luckily the demoscene is about an entirely different competition :)

Glad to see you actually read my post.
Rather than just picking one phrase out of context and commenting on that. You're a fair and impartial moderator. ;]
