Moroder's video - what the hell is that

Get real folks, it is not that we sceeners are innocent. I for one still remember http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=26 and the following outrage.

I remember that all too vividly, but let's not pretend that it's okay for Sony to swipe shit from ASD just because the French demoscene had a problem with finding good music tracks for a couple of years. That's not how the world works.

There seems to be two issues here.

First is the "misscommunication" regarding permission to use Spin by ASD. That looks like it is being sorted out by the people involved and I hope everyone comes to a satsifactory agreement.

The second and worst issue for me is this so-called video director Jai Lewis is claiming credit for having creative input to the video. He is lying in public interviews and it would seem also lying to Giorgio and other people at Sony. No amount of contracts and negotiations makes it ok for him to take any credit at all for that video, unless searching youtube for cool computer animations is considered artist work these days. I wonder how much he got paid for this?

I hope this gets resolved with a nice payment for ASD, because Spin is an awesome piece of work and should not be for free when big companies make a ton of money on it.

I love the scene, with a passion!!
I hate timberland, with a vengeance such an arrogant fool!

Giorgio instructed Jai to take some credit based on the labor he did. Giorgio made many creative decisions as exec producer, and Jai was only trying to honor Giorgio's contribution and his experiences with him. ASD should have been properly honored as well.

Call me if you have any additional concerns or want to introduce yourself directly. We can talk Jai, Sony, anything else. I'm a contact. +1 760-473-3772
I get the impression that point 2 is at the core of things:

Towards ASD, Jai Lewis failed to be frank about what he did with their work in the very end. Perhaps he did intend to just use it for VJ footage during a tour, but that's not what it's used for now. It's up front and facing the world and ASD is briefly mentioned in a Vice fluff piece. That's wrong.

Towards Moroder and the machine behind him, Jai Lewis was bending the truth. This was not his work, and direction was non-existent.

Glad to hear that the affected parties are trying to sort things out amicably, but I hope steps are made to make sure that "director" hangs from the veritable tree.

It would be amazing. Anyone here in LA?
Many more sceners in Europe (or nearby) than in the US, though there are demoparties over here. Near you there'll be NVScene in March 2015 which is probably quite worth going to and "just" up the road in San Jose, and the new Layer1 demoparty just next door in Monrovia during May. No sooner ones on this side of the Atlantic that I know of. Demoparties are, of course, great times and places to meet with people for ideas and things in person.
thx

Then he should have taken none or anything other than "director".

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and accept that's what he tried to do, but whether you call this occurrence a miscommunication or a plain fuck-up, would you say he did a good job?

Wait what? So Jai said "Yo Giorgio check out this cool animation, I didn't make it but it looks pretty rad so we should use it anyway" and Giorgio replied "Yeah dude that's pretty fresh. Even though you didn't make it just take credit for it anyway, lol" then Jai was all like "Ok lol. I shouldn't take credit for something I didn't do but I respect my man Giorgio too much so i'll just throw away any personal integrity I might have had yolo!"

Is that really the story you want to go with?

i don't think missreading versatillia's explanations does anyone any good at this point, just glad the situation is already being resolved. and respect to versatillia for stepping up and approaching the community publically.

so, can we have Giorgio track for free demomaking? an open compo perhaps, would be awesome :)

I run a party called @party (atparty-demoscene.net) that is held in Boston every June. This will be the sixth year, and the third year at MIT.

Not sure why Starchaser, who made a bunch of our trophies last year, left it out. ( :

There's also Demosplash, a mostly-demoshow at CMU.

This holds true however this ends, and it looks like both parties are in a friendly dialogue. It looks like versatillia is a contributing factor in this. I love friendly dialogues, there is no need to get all heated up when things go sideways. Although annoying, stuff like that happens form time to time. I'm quite clear Moroder isn't out to intentionally rip a demo, that is not his style.

What happend was wrong, and it seems (for once) all involved parties reached that same conclusion rather quickly.

miscommunication
This might be the keyword for the whole thread.

Not missreading anything. Apparently Giorgio told Jai to take credit for work he didn't do and Jai was ok with that. In what reality is this an acceptable situation? It's straight up fraud.

Yeah I probably shouldn't have made such a sarcastic post about it but this sort of thing makes me angry.

Anyway, nobody should be worried about a thread on pouet where only a handful of cynical demo sceners will read it. Look at his youtube video getting spammed with comments saying the video is stolen. Awesome publicity.

Which makes me wonder why someone would even try, since the ASD demo is free for everyone visible on YouTube several times. It's not like he could hide it.

because he said "in LA". So I picked demoparties on this side of the country near him. I almost did list @party and PixelJam, though I had forgotten Demosplash.
Yep someone bring Navis @nvscene. I too would like to see a Giorgio/ASD coop :) (sorry aMusic)

Also, props to Russel, great PR skills. Many wouldn't have cared to register to a forum and post in it. I guess I'm just glad to see something like this ends up okay.

Also, for those shitting on Jai. When you see the side-by-side comparison, you see some treatment has been done to make the 'solid' polygons look more like the rest (basically, a glowing edge).
So, maybe it's just 'an ugly filter on top', but does make it look less demosih, and more masses-friendly. That shows us that there's been actual work and intentions put on the video. From there I understand someone telling the other to take some credits. And I can understand the dude saying "yeah I'm happy with that rhino part, how it came out" cuz yeah that's the only thing he did.

Bear in mind some people just throw the old water color filter on photos and call that art (genuinely believing it). Not everyone wakes up in the morning thinking "Who am I gonna rip off today?"

Let's just hope ASD won't quit the scene to do music videos full time! (hint: guys, you can do both!)

Anyway guys, it's a real demoscene outreach (copyright is the other question). Is there too much demo visuals used in commercial scene?

what a joke. and interesting lesson for all sceners.

Anyway, since uncredited it is a bullshit. oh well.
'Music video by Giorgio Moroder performing 74 Is the New 24. (C) 2014 Giorgio Moroder Music LCC under exclusive license to Sony Music Entertainment Sweden AB'

'The video, directed by Jai Lewis with help from Andromeda Software Development'

big lol, adult people.

versatillia:
'Giorgio made many creative decisions as exec producer, and Jai was only trying to honor Giorgio's contribution and his experiences with him.'

but one decision was left out - apparently didn't care/cooperate with the authors, which some may call communication problem and some others - saving a five figure check for promotional video by infriging someones copyright.

which goes in some circles by the name of 'stealing'.

his dj career is totally made up by the label and the guy has no clue or he is an idiot.

i come from other backround when it comes to work ethics - if i cooperate with other artists either i get paid or get a fair credit. and we're always talking to each other.

aMUSiC: \o, usually it ended up me doing completely different track for video or game they were requesting stuff for. I believe in music tailored for certain game/video/art whatever, rather than using "oh, this is cool track let's use this".
