Is the lenght for sample-offsets with the 9-effect in trackers limited?

category: music [glöplog]

I tried to offset a sample with a lenght of > 5 seconds in Milkytracker.
But with the 9-effect I reached only a third of the length even when
using the highest value 9FF.

Hereis written »9 - Set SampleOffset – 9xx : offset (23 -> 2300)«, but what does it mean exactly respectively is there an explanation for my problem?

9xx starts the sample at xx00, i.e. FF00 = 65280 samples is the highest possible start value in MOD / XM.
On ProTracker you only have 64K long samples anyway, so it's not really an issue (it can load 128K samples but the GUI will mess up IIRC)
Gaspode, just use multiple samples.. Most tracker musicians are doing so ;)

@Virgill: Want to do an 4ch-mod. So there are maximal 31 samples allowed I think.

Not only "allowed" but also "technically maximally possible". ;) h0ffman's tracks show pretty well how you can have 31 samples and lots of 9xx effects. :D
That's a Protracker reference, not a Milkytracker reference, though :)

Is this for an Amiga prod? (If so, consider the chip RAM limits of OCS and AGA.)

In renoise it scales, so you'll lose precesion but you'll still have control.
Try chopping it up or in the case of renoise regain accuracy by triggering it earlier and lowering the volume to 0.

Within Protracker you can only set values with the 9xx command until max. 64kb afaik.

Funny thing I accidently found out though: If you do a mod in modplug and use a longer wav-sample, save the mod and load it again, the sample is cut down to 128 kb, not 64 kb. And it even plays in WinUAE on PT2.3 without crashing. How can that happen?

As've already said above, technically you can store 128KB samples in the MOD format (more is impossible) and such MODs load and play just fine in ProTracker, but they will mess up the GUI (or something similar, don't recall exactly) if you mess around with them. The 64KB limit is artificial.

Interestingly, ProTracker has a bug in the offset command that adds up several offset effects (if you don't put an instrument number next to some note), but alas this cannot be abused to go beyond the 64K offset limit.

Photon: Since Milky can write MOD files and he wants to do 4chn music and even refers to a ProTracker MOD help file, I think we can be sure that he's working on an M.K. MOD. :)
OP needs to either change gears (aka he's doing it wrong; his chosen tools don't match his use case, sometimes it's ok to let go of 1980s tech :) or chop up his base sample, so that they play seamlessly and adjust his offsets accordingly. That's all there is to it.

I'm currently working on ProTracker v2.4 (Amiga) which will allow for 128 unique patterns and 128k samples. It's working to a degree at the moment, but the sample editor still needs a fair chunk of work.

h0ffman, thumbs up for your effort!!

How about XM? If you restrict yourself to 4 channels, chip RAM size and Paula pitches, it should be entirely possible to use MilkyTracker for composing. MOD is a pretty retarded format, with limitations and inefficiencies that wouldn't have to be there, at least not because of Amiga hardware. But you could use XM volume envelopes and lots of instruments and samples. Though how much they would help with only four channels.

are you saying xm isn't a retarded format? :)

It's retarded in a different way, but at least it doesn't impose so many made-up restrictions. Except the lack of pitch envelopes, for which there is no passable technical excuse. They would have been just as easily implementable as for example panning envelopes. Actual stereo samples would have been nice and easy as well, but maybe a little bit more complicated. The pattern format could have been improved by breaking away from ProTracker style monolithic patterns which unnecessarily clump together all instrument tracks, and result in composers duplicating the same instrument note data over and over again.

three weekends ago i had some firsthand experience with protracker's interface going bonkers when you load samples bigger than 64k. drinking a lot of beer and downsampling fixed that as it's not that amiga sounds like cd quality anyway (referring to some other thread).
