Not really a fun subject : ideas welcome

Ok ... I m probably the first one to disregard internet calls for compassion... But today I m (semi) directly concerned.

The son of my wife's sister is 5 years old and has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Parents are both working but their finance are now running very low.

I m not selling you the miracle surgery but few years of his life in good conditions.

When we talked about internet fund rising I thought about the communities I knew. I immediately thought about the demoscene.

I know most of us a growing old and have children already.
Maybe we could do something.

Many of us are spending hours working hard on demo for free...I Thought maybe we could sell our skills for couple of bucks and send the money back to the family.

Maybe that's a brainless idea. Please tell me. All ideas are welcome.

I hope our small community is also able to bring that type of ideas to life.

I would finally add : please do not troll this but I guess some of us can not help.

I never win anything, but I guess some people could donate part of prize money. Or even set up a donate box on revision. 10 years ago, when we travelled around Europe and got some bad luck - broken car, people bailing out - we ran out of cash and many people helped us. Or think about mat/ozone.

With that said, I think the state, any state, should help its citizens in overcoming all types of diseases, which would be possible if there would be a healthy social state. I know, I know, let me dream. We can't all live in Norway.

Best of luck and I hope you can do something about it.

I don't think donating price money would be helping a lot, depending on which country this family lives in. It might be better do use the combined skills of some perople here and generate funds elsewhere maybe?

So which country are we talking about, and how much money? Also: why doesn't their insurance cover this?

I think that's the wrong end of the logic - we're not that numerous or wealthy to be a factor.

There are quite a few crowdfunding sites that are designed for this kind of stuff (http://www.gofundme.com/ comes to mind primarily) which are probably better suited to a charity campaign than Pouet.

Now, this may be extremely naive, but where the scene part can help (apart from the obligatory communication bit) is that you already know how to promote something - you know how to do an invitation video that can be spread among people, you know how to organize a campaign around it, you know how to "brand" something. I know this is perhaps overly optimistic and/or cynical, but if the financial situation is indeed that dire and you want to crowdfund some of the finances, your best bet is to reach as wide amount of people as you can.

sometimes i hear in the news about parents who started successful facebook campaigns to fund expensive needed treatments for their kids. mailing the media about it also helps i guess. just 2 cents.

hey nytrik, that's a pretty brutal diagnosis and it touches me personally because my sister had similar surgery back in the 90s to remove a "medusa head" from the brain
i think gargaj is on the right track when he says that the most effective way the demoscene could support fundraising is in the promotion department
but despite that i'd still like to propose more direct action

so i'm thinking, my business is custom decoration of various objects (furniture, vehicles, etc)
i could steal some of your graphics and whip up a collection box, then put it on the bar at outline- like the ronaldmcdonald box at the counter of mc d restaurants
if the orgos of parties i'm going to visit this year would allow it, i could put the box on their bar or infodesk too
if you like the idea just let me know and i'll start building the box :)

We are currently conducting investigations on children with glioblastoma multiforme (a particular type of brain tumor). We are trying to apply a new drug to treat this type of cancer. Maybe we could send you a couple of tablets.

I cannot promise that our drug will help, we are only starting to investigate it, but if you are interested I will talk to my colleague.

Adok: STFU and stop trying to benefit from this situation by asking others to be a "test sample" for the sake of your own self-interest. what a lowlife being.

I do not benefit from this situation. Pathetic that you always interpret me in the worst imaginable way.

Other than that, a donation box is probably not such a bad idea, although you might have better success with a crowdfunding effort outside the scene, more directly in the circle of friends/family of the kid + parents. I have to agree with Gargaj that pouet is indeed not necessarily the best place for something like this.

Good luck with your efforts either way (:

The Solution to this could be pretty easy:
You yourself could sell your skills for couple of bucks and give the money back to your family!
How? ->
Open a Twitch-Account, stream yourself coding, teaching others how to code (demos, games, whatever) and ask for help at the same time!
Twitch is full of 1) people that try to get money for such reasons and 2) people who want to donate money if they get sth in return! ;)
And you are a splendid coder, people will jump on that if you offer your guidance! Add to this what Gargaj said about reaching people and you can help your family easily! ;)
(I´d suggest to also open a reddit-account and broadcast your intention to steam on twitch there aswell (like 24 hours before you start your first stream!), topic like "Fighting Cancer by Teaching How To Program Your Computer" or alike! Reddit is a strange place i heard, where ppl that just opened an account and posted their first post aren´t read that much at all, but you should be used to such behaviours, considering this is pouet! ;) )

Here´s a link to Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/
You should find your way to reddit.com yourself ;)

Hope i could help and you atleast try this way!
Also let us all know here if you do it, WHEN you´ll do it, so we can put some money into your bag aswell! ;)
Considering the reddit-post:
Just brag with everything you ever did: Games you worked on, Demos you made, years of being a coder ("I am a professional coder for more than 20 years!" sounds good in my ears for example!) and dont hesitate to put links on the bottom of your post: Youtube-Captures of Demos you did, maybe no commercial sites for games you worked on, reddit-users know how to google i think!
Just make people aware of your skills! Which are awesome!
And i mixed up Guille and Nytrik again! Sorry guys! :/

But all the above still applies, just teach and brag about 2D/3D-Graphics then!

Damn, i kept mixing you two up from the day i met you the first time, sorry again! :/
