Soundcloud being sued by the PRS

category: music [glöplog]
Thought I'd fire this up on here as I know a lot of sceners use Soundcloud. The PRS (royalties collection GB) are starting legal proceedings against Soundcloud. Theres more detail here.

What with everything else that has been happening at SC lately it does seem like it's future is on very dodgy ground.

People have been looking at alternatives, sure you can make up your own mind but I recently signed up for HearThis.At. Quite handy as it basically imported my entire soundcloud account with one click!

Although in the back of my mind I'm pretty adamant that they will fall into the same fate as SC. Only a matter of time I guess.

with one copypaste you mean. ;)

yeah, interesting site. also no clear mention of an upload/time limit by the look of things, so in that regard also an improvement compared to soundcloud. let's give it a go :)

there's a max of 9.999 of unknown units apparently on the standard profile, whatever it is. let's hope # of uploaded tracks :)

it was only 30 euros or something for a year long premium account, so a lot cheaper than SC.

you have noticed that they have 10 000 plays maximum before you have to buy an account? that was a deal breaker for me.

had more than that on my soundcloud before 3 months ago deleted the account due nothing worked on my old os devices at that point. couldn't upload or edit tracklists.

got a lot of copyright infringement mails. usually without basis. sometimes for a reason..
(tip: you can bypass copyright check by adding 30sec to beginning and end of track)

would be interested if someone has found alternative that is not hearthis.at of mixcloud!

I dont really understand why everybody is so keen on using cloud-services anyway. I bet the vast majority of (scene centered) listeners click the links to the content directly and dont "browse" soundcloud for interesting stuff and stumble across it (have you actually seen the amount of bullshit tracks clogging everything if you try?). Sure, if I find an artist (via link) I like I will probably check out his other stuff too, but thats perfectly possible with a self-hosted solution.

There must be something like soundcloud to rapidly deploy on your own server so you dont have to reinvent the wheel a 100th time (maybe minus the social features)? Vservers dont cost a lot these days and theres also untergrund.net which is free for sceners...

Of course we could also build a cloud-like service for all sceners to join and upload (sceneID etc...), but the "scenecloud" idea has spawned little interest in the past and someone has to actively maintain it...

Browsers play MP3 and OGG out of the box these days, and you can instantly download it, too. And you can tell your favourite musicians how much you love their tracks through other means. Not that complicated. ;)
Some kind of self-hostable SC clone that actually works would be nice, though...
hosting it on your own server misses the social media element. i do tend to listen a lot more scener music since soundcloud, simply as i just play the stream of people i follow. if all those tracks were on their own websites, i wouldn't have given a hoot and probably just listen youtube playlists instead!

but a self-hostable SC clone with some 'hook up other artists'-community crap built-in would perhaps work.

the max of 9999 plays is indeed a bit of a dealbreaker for hearthis.at but at least i regged my handle before some other cocksucker would.

Yeah, the self-hosted instances could be connected like a peer-to-peer network for that to work... anyone up for implementing that? ;)
sounds like an excellent project for baudsurfer's demoscene.org! ;)

Not unless I can do it on an OCS amiga, but I think it might have a little trouble playing MP3's from the web :)

what everything else do you mean?

Bought pro membership at SC for Enough Records a couple months ago, been uploading all our catalogue there, would be a shame to have it close down after all that work -_-

That being said most listens of a track seem to occur on first days of the upload and then just falling into obscurity. Lots of people listening to new content of specific genres i guess but no real way to dig out hidden gems from the site.

Mediagoblin - free (GNU) software media publishing platform

Or if someone would code a scener-Soundcloud, "just" adapt OpenCP as Web-Gui. Including Würfel mode. BB Image

Since the majors started getting involved they've started running shazam style copyright cross checks on the content. DJ Mixes were hit hardest because the first tune will usually match. I've also had a lot of friends who've had their own unreleased tracks pop-up with false positive matches when uploading.

Not to mention the the other stories of them being in serious money troubles... but I'm not sure how true that is.
