general 4klang thread

category: music [glöplog]
The place to share ideas / patches / tutorials and general questions about 4klang.
Don´t want to spoil nobys thread any further ;)

ok, i´ll do the start:
Some friends asked for it. Here are most of my patches. Few nice ones, some more creepy ;)
4klang patches
Maybe a good starting point beyond the "factory presets" ;)

This is a relly good idea. I hope people will follow your example and share their instruments.
I must admit, I wont be one of them, because I have no real understanding on how this waveform stuff works and especially with programming 4klang to get something out of it that at least sounds decent. So i will probably leech everything that is shared here and hope you are ok with it.
Thank you very much for sharing and thanks in advance to everyone who will follow your example.

Hehe, I'm a bit like CONS :) I have basic understanding how things works, but I can only build some simple instruments from scratch, or fiddle with already existing ones.

were there ever instructions on how to run renoise + 4klang on osx? :))

renoise should be pay what you want..
paying for digital is like paying for sex with your right hand..

..but if there is a tutorial i could give it a try..:)

You know that the Renoise demo is pretty much fully functional apart from the WAV writer (which you don't need for 4klang anyway)?
Heh, good to have a thread like this :). I think I'll post a preset pack of some sorts probably tomorrow, don't have a time to do a proper tut for some weeks at least. I still don't like the idea of people using just straight up presets, be they how ever good, but I guess it'd still improve the current situation. Would be best if people used them to learn some tricks how to make their own sound designs. :)

Saga: exporting 4klang tracks to wav in Renoise is bad idea in and of itself too. I don't know if it's the VST version or some compatibility issue, but there are horrible "snaps" that tend to fuck a lot of shit up, especially if those go through reverbs. I guess it's some processing/buffer issue, maybe outputting some NaNs that don't exactly go through so nicely. All songs seem to work just fine with the actual source player though, so just as a heads up if your song is fucked up when exporting from your DAW, export if using the standalone player instead.

Noby I don't understand your last sentence. There's an executable player for 4Klang files? Or it's a C/C++ snippet...
Yeah I mean the the standalone player sources, the same you'd use to play the music in your intro. Never had problems with that, but DAWs can fuck up the sound royally.

Noby, same issue here sometimes.. Maybe Gopher can fix it eventually. ;)
Anyway, if someone wants his 4klang track as Windows .exe, just contact me. I can help out.

short answer:
not at all.

it's a vst plugin and apart from that it only exists as 32bit windows dll.
mostly because the ui is completely win32 api based.

and no, i dont intend to change that (and not just because i dont have a mac) :)

You should always run one single instance of 4klang. (it´s multitimbral)
If you use Renoise you have to create "alias instruments" for every channel you use.
renoise alias instruments tutorial
That was the hardest thing for me to find out ;)

Hehe, I remember that "try and error" session as well.

1in10: if you need a fully functional trackerish and legally free daw with vst support you should run openmpt for 4klang usage. Works like a charm and needs far less cpu power. No replay problems either, the output from the tracker sounded same as in the demo later on

OpenMPT+4klang hint: Turn the "VSTi Volume" slider up to the maximum, in order to have the same playback volume as the intro. Helps to identify ugly clipping problems early :)

Now we just need this updated 4klang version that was supposed to be released right after Deadline... ;)
*Cough* ... yeah ... :)
Sorry a bit busy here currently.
Update will be available at latest the upcoming weekend.

Good that this thread was bumped again it reminded me to ask a question. I have a track that I have composed with 4klang in renoise and I have panning effects on some of the instruments. When playing the track in renoise everything sounds as expected but when I record the song through 4klang and play it back with the player some of the instruments lose their panning and become mono. Strangely other instruments keep the panning. I can't work out what is going on, anyone else noticed anything like this?

Drift, haven´t had this panning problem. Maybe you´re lucky and it´ll vanish with the next 4klang update :)
