Pouet language

category: general [glöplog]
I'm just wondering, is it an official rule of pouet -- to write only in english? I'm asking since I see somebody gets banned for writing other languages -- like here.

yes, occasional line in another language is fine, flooding threads with discussions in foreign language not cool.

So, if there are more than 1 line from 1 nickname -- is it not cool?

IN SOVIET RUSSIA ENGLISH WRITES YOU!
lvd: what ps says is principally correct, but I think it needs a bit more detail.

Ostensibly there are two layers to it.

First off, on a higher level, it is common courtesy not to exclude a large portion of the Pouet populace from any discussion. That's not to say every post HAS to be in English, certainly there are enough occasions where specific jokes or quotes don't translate well into English and it'd be a disservice to try and wring them into another language. But in general I think it's not unreasonable to assume that the most commonly spoken language here (as it is for most of the scene, and really on most of the Internet) is English, and that it serves a purpose as trying to unify the community communications.

Secondly, the issue in this particular case of using a foreign language isn't that it was used, it's that it was used during what was obviously another, well, "heated debate" with calls for administrative arbitration. Now, at this point, as someone who has to perform said arbitration, I'd like to know what the hell is going on and who's right or wrong, and I doubt Google Translate is very helpful in those cases, so I basically asked the participants to calm the fuck down and tell me what the hell is going on. At that point if you refuse to cooperate, I can no longer assume good faith.

I usually hang out people to dry for a week, and if they don't come back with clone accounts I let them back.

Voting on demoscene parties was always biased towards friends. it is a human nature. A mechanism to keep social bonds. Real men/women don't care about place and create for pleasure, self-improvement or to send a message. On the other hand, it is not exactly true that good stuff will be noticed anyway. I bet having 3+ place gives less exposure in the community, which is important especially if the thing is "not for everyone" or is using less popular platform. But oh well, it's reality. Then people overreact, and then admin gets angry on secondary problem (like language) and overreacting people gets banned. Where is a drama, again?

Oh, and I agree with Gargaj, he seems to be quite tolerant actually ;-)

Not really an official rule. But it is convenient because English is our lingua franca.

I have not read the thread but I doubt that was the reason.

I think, Medikoment aka 3SOFT, got banned not for Russian language in the comments, but for inciting unnecessary flaming. That happens wherever he goes.

- what's your name dude?
- AAA! aka Medokoment! aka 3soft! aka 3ASOFT! aka Алёша мальчик! aka ...
- get ban, please.

It's right.

If you want a laugh, run the thread in question through Google translate. It doesn't make it any more coherent, but it conveys the "angry homeless man shouting insults at the bus station" tone of the offending poster extremely well.

Except that he is not angry and not homeless. This is simply his idea of humour.
